I use to get my hair curly cut. I found that it does not get rid of the split in because your hair is in such a tightened state. Plus, it limits your styling. If you want to do anything besides an afro, your hair will look uneven (i have a lot of different shrinkage patterns). A good comprise for me is cutting while blown dried. Once in a while, I cut while flat ironed (which I do once a year...hate my hair flat ironed). P.S - water isn't a moisturizer; it's the vehicle for moisturizers to enter the strands. Note from a chemist ❤

Same. I found my fresh trim honeymoon phase wouldn’t last more than a few weeks, so its back to blown out trims for me. It’s the only way for me to really asses my ends and you can still get a banging shape that way as well just be mindful of how your hair shrinks in certain areas. I feel this also better for those of us who want to retain length as well, 1/2 an inch in my hairs coily state can turn a simple trim into a cut real quick. ❤ But different strokes for different folks and all that

Also, I don't know if you saw my video on cracking the code on curly cut damage, but I think you and your hair are fine with the curly cuts. I learned after correcting over 10 curly cuts in the past month, that the issue is with them restricting their usage of products to just gels resulting in chronic dryness that is creating the splits throughout the length of the hair. It sounds like you have been listening to your hair and being more open so you probably aren't experiencing the same issues that many of them are.
@JennJackson

Narada! Thank you for checking in. Yes, I kept up with the series and has been looking into it as well because I haven’t experienced the same issue. I don’t know if it’s because I typically get cuts when go to change the shape so a lot of taken off, but I have been using different gels and haven’t deep conditioned in 2 years. I rarely use creams for example. I am digging into this though because people need to be aware and just because I may not experience it doesn’t mean it isn’t an issue. I have been paying more attention to my ends though 👀

Something that changed my life was to use a clothes steamer blowing on my hair at home while applying my leave-in cream whenever my hair needs a refresh throughout the week, and then using a Tangle Teezer or Denman Brush to brush it and define my curls at the same time. It's been glorious.

I saw some videos with people having issues with the no oil no butter/curly cut method. I think the best way to make sure there is no issue, is to blow dry the hair and check it, because it's easier to see potential damage that way. I'm really happy you find several stylists you like.

Before hearing about the curly cuts, I only knew 2 professional methods to cut natural hair: 1/stretched short hair cut with clippers, 2/blow dried long hair cut with shears. There was also the DIY method: twists and cut lol.

With regards to you comment about the splint ends issue, for someone who doesn’t have uniform curls or a uniform shrinkage rate the curl by curl technique is no for me. With that method the inherent unevenness that would result would lead to snagging when detangling and styling that happened very quickly after/ eventually even during my fresh cut honey moon phase (those breezy wash days after a cut when the ends are clean and even) as the unevenness continued unaddressed. I know alove4me on here does both, the curly cut for shape and a blown out trim to really address the ends. I don’t believe the hair must be blown out, for me any form of stretched hair to trim (pulling the hair taut as shown in the video, the twist method) would be better for me but blow outs are just easier. I will say however that the cut shown in the video to my eyes would be considered much more traditional than cutting curl by curl and thus imho not make the hair so uneven over time (leading to thinning ends) since she’s is stretching the hair to asses the ends and establishing cleaner ‘lines’ which (again imho) is the potential danger with curly cuts. I would feel in good hands with this stylist. also im not so dogmatic about the product selection, so long as I remain mindful of the appropriate shampoo to use to remove it and prevent buildup i’m not worried and have went back to using light leave ins. I just prefer the look and feel.

I feel the whole no oils no butter is just another KZbin trend that will pass in sometime. I think most people who found success with the detox had product buildup and were not shampooing their hair properly. I’ve been doing wash and gos for a few years watching KZbinrs who consistently did wash and gos and the simple routine of wash, deep condition in the shower, leave in and gel has helped people’s hair flourish, the same as mine. If you don’t like a hard cast/ingredients, sure the botanical gels would be worth it, but I don’t think the harder cast gels are detrimental to hair especially because leave ins are supposed to offset the dryness. I feel if ingredients aren’t a hang up for you, you shouldn’t feel limited to trying other gels not on bgc list. It’s all about how your hair responds and feels.

Girl the wash, condition and style products are not restrictive at all lol. I love me some products. It is all about the ingredients and how products are formulated. I had someone tell me that I shouldn't use a leave in and that particular leave in had too many "oils". 1st most of the oils were essential and it was water based with alot of humectant type of ingredients. My favorite moisturizing shampoo has nothing but oils and butters in the ingredient list! And it doesn’t leave a coating type of feeling😊 oh and I always get my hair cut too when I go for a trim so I haven't experienced the "horrible ends" issue yet.

(I do my own cuts and box dyes at home). I will go more often now im reassured thay my thick coils will survive a salon visit 😊. Yess we need to talk about these "curly cuts" girrl. Personally I think cutting on blown out hair for me will get all the damage off as i wear mainly twisted styles. I have yet to try a wash and go properly but imma attempt to real soon I have all the gels waiting 😂😂.

Loved the video jen ❤ also you should definitely do a video on the curly cut situation. For me ive had 1 curly cut , which was a actual cut and shape , and a cut on blown out hair , just recently and she said my hair looked great . So i dont know , also the people that ive watched get silk presses at the end of the year so im guessing if you dont straighten your hair its not that big of a deal . Ultimately its very interesting and ill have one more curly cut this year and ill get a silk press in like December to see how my ends look .

It was nice to see your stylist cut your hair wet with conditioner. It's how I cut mine if I'm not going to blow it out for the cut. That shape is very nice.🥰 If you like short hair there is nothing wrong with that. You don't have anything to prove to anyone.💯 Not everyone using this method has short hair. Latoya and Kayla are two I can think of who don't have a short haircut. I think many have short hair because they like the various angled shapes. The other thing is long hair is subjective. Some people feel anything past the shoulder is long, some say past the armpit, and still, others feel hair has to be at least to the bra strap.

There is nothing wrong with that. I also do zero-degree curly cuts because my hair is long and although I think the angled cuts are cute it's not my preference for my hair.

@1GoldenBreeze I went to LaToya’s video and I did not see that she was still doing “the method” with her hair. The hair care is also different between all of people.

You really don't have to grow your hair just to prove others wrong. Quite frankly, I think we should lean towards shapes, and lengths that really flatter us. Long hair without dimension is not necessarily flattering. Even well styled short hair isn't the most flattering on some face shapes. Your cut flatters you very well. Of course I'm sure other shapes will flatter you just as well. But long hair just to have long hair means what?? As I heard one stylist say, "what's the prize for having long hair?" Most people don't answer that question or they're afraid to answer it because the answer is very superficial and shows how much we buy into certain beauty standards. Re: limited products. There are a lot of products that can give us a desired style. But I'm learning that not all products leave our hair in a healthier position. Some products facilitate the health of the hair such that when we have no styling product in our hair, that our naked hair is really healthy. Kinda like only looking good with clothes vs. looking good naked. So the 2 product questions I now have are will the product give me my desired style and will the product further my hair's health. And not surprisingly there are only a few products that do both.
