Salsoul Records Reunion Show

The film is short documentary by Greg Poole about the influential disco label Salsoul Records. Legendary musician, Joe Bataan, tells how he kickstarted the label and it's unique fusion of Latin and soul. The story unfolds in anticipation of a long-awaited Salsoul Reunion show as discussed by Salsoul Records Label Manager Rachael Hardway and Mobile Mondays! Brand Manager Miss Rebecca Lynn. Members of the all 45s DJ collective Mobile Mondays!, including Operator EMZ and first generation disco DJ Joey Carvello, share the personal impact Salsoul has had on them.

Every time I hear one of those great Salsoul 12" single jams I hear musicians having FUN, and that fun and joy shine through in the music. They were particularly on their game during beautifully layered instrumental breaks. One of my favorites is "My Love is Free" by Double Exposure, which I've been listening to a lot lately. You can also feel the musicians having a ball on "Hit and Run" by Loleatta Holloway, "Doctor Love" and other fabulous cuts by First Choice. LOVE SALSOUL RECORDS! This is music that must never be forgotten and was the precursor to the disco explosion in the mid to late '70s. It was truly ecstatic dance music and I feel blessed to enjoyed so much of it as a dancer as well as listening to it at home. it still sounds HOT!! One trivia question: Some group (I'm thinking it was called Brother to Brother did a single called "In the Bottle" and it was pretty good as I recall; was that based on the instrumental "The Bottle", which I also liked?)

even now with all that edm bullshit sweeping the nation people still roll their eyes when they hear the word 'disco' lol. Me I might roll my eyes if Love & Kisses comes on, but not Salsoul - you just know in your soul that shit is the real from the first note. Then there always seems to be an unexpected chord progression, like at the beginning of Dr Love... sigh so so good

I was there in the time! I grew up in the Bronx and was doing the gig circuit and this stuff was just epic! Now I live out here in the UK and seeing this makes me grateful that I was a teenager when I was :-)
