People of the Middle Ages were no different from us. They lived, loved, worked, celebrated life. It wasn't easy but they did the best they could with what they knew. We cannot bash them 300, 400, 600 years llater and judge them by our standards. They may find us odd or uncouth. I enjoy these videos and history to get a tiny glimpse of their lives. I think this is a lovely video and I love her outfit. Elegant and beautiful. Thank you for sharing this. ❤

Well, maybe it was more of a medieval inspired event than an actual, strictly historically correct, medieval event? Like some Goths, who are inspired by the medieval ages in *some* parts of their dresses... They don´t actually dress mediaeval, just like most people inspired by mediaeval look in fantasy dressing/ cosplay don´t go all the way mediaeval eather.

The Saltarello has always been primarily improvised; this particular version was invented in the modern era (1990s). The clothing is also not historically accurate, it is more of a mashup of medieval-inspired look. LOL. All of this is modern.

What i find interesting is that in most of the paintings of the Saltarello the dancers seldom touch and seem to rather do their own thing. With a lot more turning around ones own axis involved. The peasants probably didnt follow choreographys which made the dance more lively.

Nice to see a dance invented ca 1990 in the United States being performed in Lithuania. The music is premodern. The dance is known to have existed. This choreography is conjectural and is based in part on English Country Dance patterns found in the English Dancing Master. Due to occasional oral transmission, this version is slightly different from the one that I learned at an SCA Dance Collegium.
@micheleabate1467 жыл бұрын
The saltarello is a musical dance form originally from Italy. I's named for its peculiar leaping step, after the Italian verb saltare ("to jump"). Today there are still saltarelli played by folk bands in central Italy with the harmony and zampogna.
@Anonymoussomeonenr17 жыл бұрын
It came to the US with the Italians, I suppose.
@kunegund96907 жыл бұрын
No, Barbara is really right. Someone from the SCA made it up for authentic music because we don't have any saltarelli step descriptions beyond "jumpy dance".
@jducoeur7 жыл бұрын
One correction: the choreography is based on iconography from the middle ages; it doesn't have anything to do with English Country Dance. But yes -- it was invented circa 1990. (And I published the original article, in The Letter of Dance.) I've gradually come to the opinion that this choreography is pretty unlikely in a number of respects, but the dance is at least fun...
@jducoeur7 жыл бұрын
Um -- Mario, you should really make sure you understand your facts, or you're going to be the one who looks like an idiot. Saltarello is a period dance, yes, and the *music* is period, but *this choreography* isn't likely to be much like that dance; anyone claiming that it is doesn't know what they are talking about. Seriously, dude, do your research and you will find that there is scarcely a shred of documentation for this choreography: it was, as Barbara says, invented around 1990, based on two paintings that didn't even claim to be the Saltarello. I worked with the guy who invented it, *while* he was inventing it.
