Really surprised at the very low number of comments on this excellent review. Excellent, because I agreed with everything you said, and surprised because the film was nothing if not divisive. Strange. Anyway, I'm glad I wasn't alone in thinking it was hugely enjoyable right up until the last 30 minutes, when it nosedived into silliness. I liked all the performances and that whole 'outsider looking in' vibe, the snobbery, the delicious fakery everywhere, and of course it looks beautiful. That Oliver was a damaged individual from the get-go was very cleverly revealed, but once that ace had been played, it lost all originality. I think it probably will get reappraised when Fennell has a bigger body of work, and I understand that she's going to make a version of 'Wuthering Heights' next.

It may help you understand the film, once you realize that Quick is based on Steerpike from the Gormenghast trilogy. Noone else seems to have spotted this, because nobody reads Peake nowadays. Fennell read Eng Lit at Oxford and will know about Peake. I cannot prove this, but it explains the features of the film that are not taken straight from Brideshead, and Highsmith's villain, Ripley. There is not that much in the film that is original, once you spot the Gormenghast link, which is why Fennell has been so coy about it: perhaps.

Likewise I really enjoyed it too. Actually I was loving it for the most part, up until his reveal where he monologues his mastermind plan to the Mum on life support. Most of the film had this morally grey and ambiguous quality to the characters, and we got to piece together what characters motivations were. And then that explanatory dialgue hits and it felt like a Bond villain twirling his moustache while he said it. Or the reveal to an Agatha Christie who-done-it. Anyways, just discovered your channel tonight and binged like 5 of your videos so far - i'm having fun 😅 Really enjoying your perspectives on films.
