Isn't it wonderful having manufacturers interested in DIY project videos and then contacting you with offers of things that they feel you could use to make the project that much easier but complete? Total Boat really stepped up with the care package, along with allowing you to post discount codes for other DIYers. Have they asked for scenes of this video to use in their advertising? That is the first thing I thought after they sent all the useful items because if it were my business, I would have asked for permission to use parts of your video to show other builders how easy the necessary fillers are to use.

@Pocketfarmer1Ай бұрын
Yay another shill for the completely annoying epoxy company. I have in the spirit of fairness done a couple of projects on land and sea with the stuff. It is just epoxy, repackaged, overpriced and overhyped epoxy. The companies media saturation is repellent ant at this point . Also there is no way a chandlery in Rhode Island knows more than the Gougeon Brothers. The built boats and taught sailing particularly to the grandson of the head of Dow chemical. The brother worked with Dow to bring epoxy from the military to the civilian market . So who do you think knows better and can sell it cheaper? Dow with 60+ years of research and development , or the people that sell rope and bolts in Jamestown.

A much easier way to finish off any product like this is to use the back of a used caulking tube. You can squeeze it for the desired radius. The contacted edges squeegee up the excess as the radiused edge cuts the desired curve. All left over product is pushed into the back of the tube. You can just scoop out the product and re-apply. Works for so many applications. Glad to see your building again. I would go crazy going that long without something to build. Enjoy

Depending where you are, but I imagine for anyone building boats professionally, that Thixo combined with a powered caulking gun would be such a time saver the time saved would more than compensate for the cost per tube. for a hobbyist builder it'll depend how how much the time saving is worth to you. Great video as always 👍

I used the Total Boat Top Side Paint on my CLC Passagemaker dingy build and have been extremely disappointed. Even in Florida heat I had to wait 2 days for it to cure enough to sand between coats. Coverage is poor and difficult to brush, even using their brushing thinner. Finally now that I am using the boat durability is ok, but not what I would expect vs. the cost. I think I would have been better off using a exterior house paint. When I re-paint the whole dingy in a couple of years I will use a 2 part PU and not worry about the cost. Hopefully you will have better luck!

Hey guys you are always making or fixing or breaking things on a boat so anything that makes the job easier or faster is a bonus. With that said, I make my own thickened epoxy. My mix is epoxy + fine pumice powder. No real formula, just mix it in until it is as thick as I need. I buy the pumice powder that folks use to make the French polish setup for finishing furniture (I think they use it for that) anyway it is a Mohawk product and available on amazon and not expensive. The thickened epoxy that results is smooth without bumps or chunks that can occur when using sawdust. I mostly use it for bedding knife blades when making hidden tang knives or wherever I need a putty-like epoxy. It is easy to work with and sands but it abrasive on sharp tools it trying to cut the hardened product because of the silica particles. Give it a test and see if you like it.

Any special reason for such large fillets? Is it easier to fibre glass? Or also for structural/seal joints? How do the two products used, kick off in the exposed sun?
@robinbennett5994Ай бұрын
Fillets do several things. They provide a lot more surface area for the glue joint. They improve the mechanical leverage, and they help the fibreglass cloth fit into the corner. They are also very useful when you need to cover up joints that don't fit perfectly!

I don’t know if this is a cry for help but don’t bother with a bright finish for anything!! It isn’t worth your energy! You’ve said to since even the beginning of Big Red, “workboat finish!” Even A2A just painted their beautifully made tender after it was getting beat up. Save some sanity and just paint it.
