"In Italy you think first and then you run. In the Premier league you run as you're thinking" - Kalidou Koulibaly, Chelsea FC

As a Chelsea season ticket holder of over 30 years, I found this enlightening. Boehly is an intelligent and successful businessman with a clear vision of what he wants to do at Chelsea. and the brutal the sacking of the ever-popular Thomas Tuchel proves he will be ruthless in discarding anyone who does not align with his thinking. On one level I am excited about the future, but at the same time I am apprehensive and somewhat sceptical. He is right in identifying that the Premier League is the 'premier' global sports brand and that there are potentially untold untapped riches to be made if he is able to commercialise Chelsea in the way he is planning. However, football, especially in England is very traditional and adverse to change so he has a big job on his hands. In 50 years, Bohley will either be viewed as a visionary who changed football forever, or an upstart American entrepreneur who bit off more than he could chew and got his fingers burnt. It will be fascinating to see which one of those two it is.

This is refreshing to hear from an owner. Considering that we never heard anything from Abramovich, besides the odd offical club statements. I really like how Todd and his team have identified issues with existing loan system and player development. I'm sure they have a long list of things that need to improve in both business and football and they seem to moving quickly.

This business has tended to attract the super wealthy who have looked at it as a passion. Typically those that have bought into it and operated it as a business haven't had much success because until the media money came in, football clubs have been a drain on resources. Liverpool are the exception, but nobody has aggressively chased revenue. It's an interesting take, and if you look at the trajectory in recent years, its enormous but it hasn't reached it's full potential because it's still very much a niche sport in China & India. As a fan, I want this guy to spend big money on the best players. I don't care whether he does it through his own pocket or through money he makes, we want to win. Although I take your point about tradition, you don't want to be fleeced as a fan at every opportunity because the club you love has decided to prostitute itself. But listening to him, he's a bright boy, he'll make mistakes but I think we are heading in the right direction.

@OzyMandias132 жыл бұрын
And here I thought the £1.5 billion of debt forgiveness was his main farewell gift. Can you imagine ?? No, but seriously, RA had nothing to do with it. In fact, the Raine Group, who RA DID hand select to oversee the vetting of candidates and final decision process had people that were cozy with the Ricketts Family out of Chicago and tried to give them a boost. If that one member of the family wasn't a unabashed racist and another one a homophobe, who knows what would have happened? I was despondent. I thought the fix was in. They would have Glazered us back to the late Victorian era. No, Boehly/Clearlake made it happen by being the best candidate in category after category. Implying a link between this ownership and the last is inviting unwarranted criticism and unwanted scrutiny..

It's so refreshing to see an owner really being open about their vision and plans for the club. There was no panic with Tuchels dismissal. When Tuchel pushed out Tammy it was clear he didn't want to coach players up. When he pushed for Billy to be sold to Brighton Tuchel had pretty much sealed his fate. As soon as that happened I said to people that it was clear Tuchels vision wasn't in line with the new owners and he had one foot out of the door. People said I was stupid for saying he was near being sacked but the sale didnt fit with recent signings of young talent with high potential. Billys intelligence and creativity is also just what Chelsea have been lacking. It was also pretty clear with the amount of business done with Brighton that there was a lot of sniffing around Potter going on. Its a shame Boehly didn't just refuse to sell Billy or seal a low buyback knowing Potter would be the perfect coach for him. For now I really believe Potter is the right choice for the clubs vision and desire to be more sustainable. I hope it lasts a long time. Long enough at least for Lampard to get enough track record to return. Without him we wouldn't hear Todd talking about Tammy, Reece, Mount etc. Lampard literally added hundreds of millions and potentially more in value to the team through his implementation of the academy with the 1st team.

Roman did us proud for almost 20 years and kept us thinking every 2 years who our next manager was going to be, lots of trophies and success with a number of ups and downs with 2 champions league winners medals. What's Todd's Chelsea got in store for us Chelsea fans for the next twenty years? Another 2 Champions league winners medals by any chance, you know Todd will want that. Strap yourself in for the ride, I think by the amount of travel to get players in for the new season and the amount of meetings and phone calls he must have made he definitely is looking to hit the ground running and get a Squad fit for success and a top four finish, along with a trophy- that would be nice. Good luck Mr Boehly. We will be successful because you are a hugely successful businessman and not only intelligent but smart with a vision for our future. Will someone please teach him the basics? 11 players, 1 is goalie, 10 outfield - 4 4 3 cannot be a thing. English Premier League footballers work for most of the year, unlike the American system where there is 3 months holiday. This is why a North vs South competition is not possible in the schedule. The top clubs are actually trying to reduce the number of games, not increase them. Is he just another American who dreams about money but not about protecting the club and it's supporters and winning?

Boehly was discussing “18, 19, 20 year old superstars” and also academy kids and their development when he mentioned Salah, DeBruyne, Tammy, Mason, etc. Back then Salah and KDB were sold because they couldn’t get enough playing time at Chelsea. Finding an affiliated team for them to play in and develop would solve that problem.

noun: franchise; plural noun: franchises; noun: the franchise (chiefly in North America) an ownership structure in professional sports in which a league is limited to a fixed number of teams. So a man from North America described owning a professional sports team like Chelsea as being in a leage of a fixed number of teams. God I know you hate him for being American, but do some fucking homework.
@flawleics91352 жыл бұрын
@@14tralfaz I hate no one for being American. Been a fan of NFL and College since I was very young. Had multiple great holidays to America. Respect the culture. It's a Club. Respect.
@flawleics91352 жыл бұрын
@@14tralfaz 'an authorization granted by a government or company to an individual or group enabling them to carry out specified commercial activities, for example acting as an agent for a company's products'. All English football clubs operated before the need for this authorisation. They were and still are clubs so they literally aren't franchises. Without any money Arsenal would still exist for example, the Jaguars would not. Don't compare our cultured history of Football with your absolute MK Dons mentality of time. dO sOmE hOmEwOrK.
@14tralfaz2 жыл бұрын
@@flawleics9135 I agree completely! But what I was driving at is the EPL is essentially like the NFL or any franchised American team. There are only 20 teams per year that split the revenue of the EPL. If you are not there then you are not a part of that sharing. Sure the structure is not the same as the NFL but the structure of distributing media rights which is where they make money is only distributed to those in the EPL.
@flawleics91352 жыл бұрын
@@14tralfaz That's factually not true, some of the money gets sent further down the pyramid, and franchise leagues like the NFL are usually protected teams, where as the Prem will have 3 new teams every year. It literally isn't a franchise league by all definitions. The only franchises in football are the likes of Red Bull group, King Power group, Etihad group etc but they are only franchises pertaining to their business model, but in the eyes of the football leagues those teams are not individually franchises as none of the teams are.

To all the UK people commenting and praising this interview, share it with others. As an American who has supported Chelsea since 1996, the anti-american sentiment (discounting him entirely on this) is extremely discouraging. It’s a global brand and sport and we care too over here. These men are smart. Lets go Blues.

At 10:32 indirectly he mentioned that mo salah and KDB is from Chelsea academy, someone has to tell him about the truth. Clearly he doesn't understand the PL football

Some interesting points. I'm still not convinced he knows what he's doing in English Football, but I think he'll obviously do his best, for his investors for a start.
@JonathanCrossland2 жыл бұрын
Let's understand the core problem here. He doesn't understand the most vital aspects of European football. He wants to apply an American view on the UK. The club's are 100 + years old, the is history. He thinks only in retail terms. All star games is an example of an American view that is misaligned with reality in the UK. He needs to eat humble pie, we don't need his evolution of football.
