Ryan I love all the info and content from your entire crew over there!!! The years of quality and hard work. I found a company that makes a manual roller mat! Company is TROPICAL MARINE CENTER. And yes I am a preferred reefer!😉 I am saving up for a theiling compact roller mat for my 120 reef. Look at tropical marine center in the UK even have a video on youtube

Most sump options use filter socks. Would be nice to have more options!

Im a newbie (~1 year) and used filter socks for most of that time. Recently switched to a roller and I’ll never go back. I love that whatever I do (over feed, scrub rocks, remove algae, etc) all of it’s out of the water within a few hours vs a few days at best (or for me a week or two 😂) when changing filter socks. If we get to the point where we can have a washable roller material, that would be pretty amazing. I’m mostly too lazy for that, but I think it’s a good idea.

I also like the automatic roller vs manual. The downside for manual would be how it would mess with your water height for ATO. It’s already kind of a pain with automatic. Someone needs to solve that problem

I got a clarisea SK-3000 it's automatic best thing I ever did would highly recommend.

My compact rollermat would not fit in my red sea sump. I had to do a simple mod to the filter sock tray to make a Klir work. It is fussy, but still better than changing socks. I am not convinced on the ultra wide fleece. For the really big fleece, isn't there a concern that it won't roll faster that your 3 day rule on a clean tank?

ISeaLive makes manual roller mats for the fluval evo, innovative marine, and waterbox AIOs. I bought one for my Nuvo 15, and it's around the same price as the roller filters that Innovative Marine came out with a month ago, but it has a smaller footprint and I think it looks way sleeker.

I really want a manual roller mat but I want a big one...everything is tiny and fragile...and small rolls....if they don't do it soon I'm gonna DIY a large multi layer drip tray....not sure why we even left that....hardest part was cutting the squares...

Once I bought the Theiling RollerMat I ended up getting web filters for all my other sumps especially when I used to travel for work for weeks at a time.

There is a Clarisea SK-3000M listed in a few places (overseas? early model that never released??) but I couldn’t find one to buy. I had exactly the conclusion that Randy did and went looking!

its now 2022, and some 6 years into the future, on the issue about Rollermats, would you recommend one or continue to go with the old stndard, of Filter Socks, Mechanical and ORganic filtering?????
@BRStv2 жыл бұрын
If you don't want to change out filter socks, roller mats are the way to go! Super effective and so many different options on the market now, you'll surely be able to find one to fit your sump and aquarium's needs.

I don't think "wider is better" . The right size for your tank loading is better. Light feeding a few fish may not allow the gunk in the fleece roll to exit the water before it starts to decay. Remember the fleece needs to clog to a certain degree to trigger a auto fleece filter to advance the fleece. I'm either behind the times or ahead of the times, because I'm replacing my Trigger sump with a two compartment DIY sump made from a rimless aquarium. No place I can't clean and easy to upgrade/ change filter, skimmer, whatever as technology moves forward. IMO, simple, open sumps are future proof.

@BRStvInvestigates What about a nano tank and using filter floss vs a filter sock?
@BRStv3 жыл бұрын
Filter floss will usually let more through, but is super easy to change out. Filter socks will catch more, but washing them is a bit more involved. While filter floss is probably the most popular option for nano tank owners, there is something to be said about filter socks being reusable.

There's interesting threads on Reef2Reef about people working on 3D printed fleece rollers that would be manually rotated.

Only problem is the hassle to mod the old sump to fit the rollermat. If the Klir can be more robust/reliable would be great!
