Knee dragging isn’t about getting low. It’s about coming off the bike and holding it upright while your body position lowers to propel you through the curve. Knee dragging is about keeping the bike upright as much as possible through the corners to maintain maximum traction so you can get more speed!

Big difference between reaching just to drag knee and it being a byproduct of corner speed and proper body position. I remember when I used to burn through a set of sliders every trackday ten years ago, now I go through a set every two to three seasons of racing and track days because I only skim the surface instead of planting my knee into the ground.
@SALTxTHExWOUND

Absolutely! My first set I wore out in maybe a month, now I’m a lot better with hitting my knee and then picking up just a tad to barely skim the surface. I’m mostly using it as a gauge now that I’m used to it. 👍🏻

Also worth mentioning it makes a huge difference how tall someone’s legs are. Someone with tall legs will have a much easier time to drag knee than someone who is shorter or has short legs, in the same corner with same body position and sane speed. That’s something people completely miss.

Dragging knee and learning how to truly ride is one of those things that you just can't explain the rush it gives you. When you hang knee a quart of the way through a turn and then open up the throttle out of it,is an other worldly feeling
@HighGrade_FireBlade
@HighGrade_FireBlade 2 жыл бұрын
You’re absolutely correct about not needing to be leaned over anymore than usual to drag knee. The whole purpose of hanging off the bike is to change your combine center of gravity so you can achieve the same turn radius with less lean angle

My first time was so casual... I just found the perfect road and turn and I tried... It was a left turn, I always felt more confident on lefts, pretty big turn, 2 lanes, lots of space to make corrections if necessary and decent speed. I touched the pad for like 0,1 and it was scary **panik** but at least I knew where I was, and I knew I could do it. Ass out, chest out, try again, and boom , new scratch, I was so proud... My pads where new and 1 month later I had to change them because they where destroyed lol. Now I barely touch my knee, I only use it as a lean angle indicator and I don't necessarily feel the need to touch down on every corner 🤷 Right now I'm more interested in a better body position (as low and out as possible) than knee drag, and honestly, I thinks it's better to get a good body position rather than knee down.

Most riders feel more comfortable on left turns and not right because the throttle is on the right. When you turn right, your right arm is not planted and you have to change hand position in order to correctly operate the throttle so it feel more difficult. On left turns, your right arms is usually planted/draped on the tank allowing for easier throttle control (also you don't have to change the hand position).

It really is that click that happens. First knee down was in a parking lot for me and it took damn near an hour total over 2 days to be able to do it at will. All the practice was finding that comfortable body position with one butt cheek off and committing head and shoulders near mirrors. Now it's muscle memory 💪

you might touch right first BECAUSE you're less comfortable on that side. Because you're less comfortable turning to the right you've got a different (slightly reduced) hang-off position which causes the bike to lean differently. look your helm cam position when cornering on left vs. right -- you're more off the bike to the left (that is, more comfortable getting off the bike, reducing required lean to take a corner @ speed). just a thought.

It’s all right hand clover leafs so you can have a blast. Just have to chill a bit so you don’t cook the tires because you’re always going right.

hard turning on high traffic freeway transistions and curved ramps carries a real risk factor imho....the more slow heavy traffic in rush hours the more OIL and various fluids get deposited in the worst possible places....just saying from experience! Particularly in center of lanes

It’s a lot easier with long flexible legs. Shorter stiffer persons will have to lean over way more. This is forgotten when talking about knee down. Look at moto jitsu. He can do knee down with almost zero lean angle because he can do split with his legs.

nice, but there is a big BUT over here. dragging knee of public road most of the times is unnecessary if you want to go fast. it's only purpose is if you want to take crazy photos for IG. take for example TT riders. Guy Martin, John Mcguinness and many others, can do a whole TT (practice, races etc) with only a pair of knee pads. we don't have to wonder if they go fast, it's oblvious. drag knee is only helpfull on a track to see how much you leaned.... personaly, i learned to drag without ever try it. i don't ride with knees-legs out so i don't drag so often (don't know why, i used it like this). pads are scratched, but i have the same pair more than 2 years, haha. never ride over your limits. have pattience, ride safe!

Man, love your content, but I would probably recommend that you guys go do a track day or track riding course before pushing the street knee dragging any further. The turns that you get at a track are so different and so much more fun/adequate for doing it, that it will probably give you a different perspective on the matter. I'm just an average rider, but I know going to a track did a lot for me and now I don`t see myself trying to drag knee on the street anymore, mainly because of the unnecessary added risk, specially on two way roads. Ride safe and all the best!

@@SALTxTHExWOUND went out tonight and touched down twice on my left knee. Couple scary moments when I rolled off and the engine braking made the front dive mid corner. I used third, fourth gear seems much smoother. Right turns seem harder as we drive in the left lane and I always turn in too tight and worry il end up hitting oncoming traffic or slipping on the painted lines. Very happy I felt the knee touch down tonight though! It scuffed the top of the knee slider rather than the bottom which was surprising.

Well, I was taught (by national champs) to always use as little lean as possible (street and track) and the knee down is totally pointless unless it happens naturally because of the (high) pace and corner speed. It's nothing, but an indicator that you are near/at maximum lean. Modifying body position just to drag knee is pointless, especially at lower speeds, and your general riding will suffer.
@SALTxTHExWOUND
@SALTxTHExWOUND 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. And it’s not me over exaggerating my body position, it’s me being the RIGHT body position so that when I’m leaned over I know where I’m at. Before I was a little crossed up and had slowly been working on that. You’ll see what I mean when I do my tutorial. Thanks for watching brother! 👍🏻

From what I hear - you add throttle when you lean bike. Problem with it - you can not do both at the same time. Or you’re might “ask” more traction fro rear than it can provide.
@SALTxTHExWOUND
@SALTxTHExWOUND 4 жыл бұрын
You want to be steady on the throttle during lean, you add throttle as you’re standing the bike back up out of the corner, never add throttle at full lean
@borscheproductions3077
@borscheproductions3077 4 жыл бұрын
@@SALTxTHExWOUND from engine sound - you’re adding throttle. you’re right about steady throttle - but it needs to happen after you added desired lean. lean is a by product of speed, you’re matching speed with lean angle, otherwise bike would either fall down or will continue turning. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWrNpISAZZmejK8 - here is a better explanation what i’m talking about. Also lookup Simot Crafar video on turning with closed throttle

Very cool LOOKING but I cant tell you how many knee draggers I have totally gapped even though I have never dragged a knee. It is a tecnique with a real purpose in racing trying to extract every bit of speed however but in the twisties where one ought not be actually RACING anyone? Other than being a fun cool thing to do? Yeah proves nothing in particular if you ask me other than you are still young and limber enough maybe?

You do NOT want to scrape your peg, that can cause your wheel to lift off the ground slightly and lowside you. Work on your body position, if you are dragging peg you can drag knee veryyy easily. Do a track day and I guarantee you'll drag knee on the first couple sessions. Good luck!

No, I've pretty much ran the same PSI for the past few years, I run 32front/30rear and my tread wears evenly. On track I'll likely have to adjust for the heat it'll create.

Don't bother with another video. You obviously don't understand why knee dragging happens. It's not about looking good. When you come under a heavy breaking situation. Makes sense to open your knees wide to spoil airflow and create more air resistance. when you turn you should have shifted your ass to the inside which brings your outside leg in tight and your inside knee becomes a pavement sensor, not a fireworks show. Your not supposed to use them as Teflon grinders but touch sensors.
