In 2002, he was named the 24th greatest fighter of the past 80 years by The Ring magazine.[4] In 2003, The Ring rated Sánchez number 88 on the list of 100 greatest punchers of all time.[5] Sánchez was voted as the #3 featherweight of the 20th century by the Associated Press. My two cents is you’re only as good as the fighters you faced. At that time in boxing history there really wasn’t too many truly great featherweights! So even with the hype Sánchez was good maybe even very good but he wasn’t the greatest!

I've told people about this kid for years, I'm a former golden gloves boxer myself and we all knew who Salvador Sanchez was, undeniably the finishest fighter I have ever seen, his corner men were amazing to watch, they put on a performance that was mesmerizing, the taking of his pulse they would count his breathing, by the time the bell rang again, he was as fresh as the first round, and let's not forget the fighter, he was a tactician beyond words. Sanchez at 23 was already an elite fighter and a legend. He beat Puerto Rico's and Africa's greatest fighters. You don't see a weakness in him as you would most fighters. And like the great ones, he always found a way to win. He never forced a knockout either. His footwork is the best I've ever seen, he's still bouncing on his toes in ROUND 15!!! Anybody that's ever been in a ring they know that's INSANE. Sanchez had all the qualities Chavez, Marquez, Morales, Barrera, and Finito had, but better. Offensively, defensively, condition wise, and ring IQ he was like a little Sugar Ray Robinson. Chava's training methods were similar to Haglers and Marciano's. Rain or snow he ran 10-15 miles daily in the MOUNTAINS at high altitude. He trained under 100+ degree weather with the ring built outside, not inside a gym. He had a doctor training him how to lower his heartbeat and control his breathing. Swam daily. Master of the sweet science, but trained like a Spartan. Trained and sparred with Lupe Pintor too! Must of been a sight to see that one!

I didn't know how to fight at first I was a wimp, but once I trained I did have about 45 amateur fights in Mexico at featherweight/super featherweight and I won them all. My uncle Cesar Deciga whom I'm named after was a contender in the 70s and fought legendary puncher Carlos Zarate. My idol was Naseem Hamed at the time late 90s so my style was not very Mexican and it would piss off my trainers at the time. It resembled like Luis Alberto "Venado" Lopez, current featherweight champ. I also met Muhammad Ali and was blessed by him as was my little brother and he yelled out to some journalists that were there "These are the champions of the future!" God bless him.

I 100% agree. I was a 14 year old amateur fighter and huge fan of the sport when he died. I was actually at a tournament in Arlington, TX when I heard the news. Like most fans it was initially shock and then deep sadness. We had lost a super talent at an age when he was probably just reaching his prime. But like most I had no idea who he was when he fought Danny Lopez. For the first 5 rounds I just knew Danny was going to get him with his right and this brave young challenger would be gone. Little did I know just what a complete fighter this young challenger was. After round 6 I still was holding hope for Little Red but I saw his title slipping away. What s clinic Sanchez put on though..

I have to be honest .. Sanchez doesn't get that much love. Im in my 50s and watched this guy fight when I was a kid with my father. We were always glued to our TV when he fought. As mexican americans, he was our fighter. He was the young champion who was a boxing star in our community. He was a big deal.. talented and humble but an avid student of the game. He had this style that just looked amazing as he threw punches at his opponents. It was a great time to be a boxing fan way back then. After he beat Nelson, our whole neighborhood went crazy with pure joy and happiness. Little did we ever think he would be gone from this earth just a short time after that fight. It was devastating... I was sad only a few times throughout boxing.. Sanchez death was one .. Boom Boom Mancini when he fought Doo Ku Kim and Kim died a few days later after that fight, leaving his pregnant wife behind.. and Gerald Mcquellum being taken out on a stretcher after his devastating fight with Nigel Benn, that left him brain damaged. Boxing can be a brutal sport for some, but I respect all those who go into that ring to earn a living. This was an amazing short film on one of my favorite boxers growing up. It brought back a lot of memories of my father and I watching boxing together in our living room. The narration was excellent and on point. You gave good supporting commentary on each fight. The whole thing was BLOODY FANTASTIC‼️. "VIVA SANCHEZ POR VIDA" 😇💔

@rrr59921 it's a beautiful thing when a sport or love for an athlete can break down barriers or walls or animosity towards one another... all because they share the love for an amazing fighter. A fighter who was a Mexican... Chicano .. a symbol of pride. A common interest shared by brothers who loved and admired and cheered him on... it doesn't get any better than that. All it takes is a crack in that wall for it to come falling down. I hope one day they can forgive and love one another again as brothers because life is too short to hold anything against thy brother 🙏🏼 ❤️.

@@kllbll85 people mentioning Duran but what was Duran doing at 23 years old? Losing to a guy called Esteban de Jesus! By contrast, Sanchez was pound for pound king of boxing when he was 23 years old! Duran improved a lot but Sanchez would have improved just as much himself and grown into bigger weights. Sanchez is clearly a guy who learns quickly. Trainers were probably shocked when they were teaching him head movement and countering and then they get him on the pads to practise and hes doing it masterfully after a few tries. The point is he has lots of room to improve at 23 even though his skills are other worldly at that age. It looks like Sanchez is at his peak because his game is so complete but we might have just been hitting the surface. He said himself in his interview after that Lopez fight that he mentioned intelligence. The guy was a craftsman. I'd say he learned a hell of a lot in that Nelson fight.

Everyone always talks about Sanchez iron lungs and while i do agree that he’s probably the greatest conditioned fighter ever. His accuracy and precision has got to be one of the greatest ever. If you look at his combinations there is no wasted movement, no wasted punches, he knew when put volume together and when to put some mustard behind his punches. The accuracy behind every punch was clinical, the definition of dissecting the opponent. If he threw a 4/5 punch combination he would land 3/4 of the punches everyone knows if you’re landing more than 50% of your punches you’re putting on a clinic. and he also did a great job of mixing it up the body and head. Even disguising where he was going to punch, he would crouch and make opponents think he’s going to the body and change angles and land a hook, uppercut or overhand punch upstairs. I mean there is so much you can say about him you can honestly write a book describing his skills. I didn’t even get into his footwork and fluid movements, his IQ, his conditioning and on top of it all the great fighters he did these things to.

I think i saw all of his televised fights with my Dad back in the day, Sanchez was one of our favorite fighters, he had immense skill for a fighter so young. It is a tragedy he was lost to us so young, but he is in my personal hall of fame as one of the best i ever saw.

Salvador Sanchez. Goat. Never really lost a fight. One questionable decision against him. Best cardio.. From rd 1 to 15..same footwork, breathing, rhythm. The best overall fighter that I have ever seen. An absolute monster from he was barely into his 20s. Would love to have seen him against a young Floyd Mayweather.

Thank you for making this video. It really opened my eyes to one of the best fighters I've ever watched. I was born in 1981 so I was too young back then, but to know he existed and rose to the top of his game was amazing to watch. I was born in El Salvador, which means "The Savior", so his name holds a special place in my heart. RIP Salvador.

I watched him long before this fight on Box de Mexico on a Spanish TV channel when we were living in San Antonio and with my wife being an Hispanic she would translate for me what the announcers was saying.. And I knew this guy was special and would be a champion.. He likes fast cars and unfortunately he dies in a accident driving his Porsche 928..

The fact he stopped Azumah Nelson, an all time great in his own right and the man who would take the crown in Sanchez' wake and hold it for almost a decade himself, says it all. Quite the feat that.

@@etiennebunbury1285 Yep, I was doing that solely by memory. But in looking it up, , over his 1st 40 fight spanning 14 years from 1979 - 1993, he lost only 2X. To Sanchez and Sweat Pea Whitaker in an ill advised, 1X attempt to move up to Lightweight against the best LW from the mid 80s - mid 90s decade and one of the top 3 LWs of all time. If your gonna lose, might as well make it to guys top drawer like that. Sanchez was the only one to take Nelson out before the final bell, and did it in Nelson's prime. A feat even fighters like; Pernell, Wilfredo Gomez, Reulas, Fenech, and Leija could never accomplish despite a couple of them getting several cracks at Nelson. Says a ton about how tough Nelson was and just how exceptional Sanchez was. His far too early passing is a true tragedy and sad case of "what might have been".
