As a master mariner with over 20 years exp at Sea, this is something I would never want to exp. in my life. There was some medical issue with some crew and the fight onboard led to damage to the engine/electrical controls while the vessel was on a SW course of Mauritius towards Atlantic Ocean. Resultant was thst all engine power was lost and vessel drifted towards the island and aground. 94 Miles off aftsr her salvage she sunk to 4400m to the bed of Indian Ocean. The Salvage Video is exceptional, the hard work that goes into this is remarkable esp removal of fuel oil fm Engine room and working machinery and bunker tanks. Kudos to the salvors.

They don't mention that the Benita sank while under tow to Alang....under their watch. It was still part of the salvage,only half the job is done getting it off, you then have to deliver it. It was blatantly obvious the carrier was poorly trimmed, the stern was diving from the get go.

I was wondering about the "no cure no pay aspect". I'm guessing, but In this case, the 'cure' was probably the removal of vessel from coastal waters for which they probably did get paid. If she had made it to the scrap yard that probably would have been a very nice bonus on top. All guesswork on my part.

@Mike L I guess that's what doomed the vessel. A bowl will float well if placed into water upright. Turn it around and it will still float, but will be very sensitive to the slightest imbalance and won't have any of the self-rightibg properties. But it was a laudable effort nonetheless.

You have a point there Keith. Like so much of the world, things are run by accounts with no practical experience. (Boeing 737max) Eventually it comes back to bite them, cost the company a fortune, but instead of sacking the accountants, (that never happens) they ask the accountants how do we recover this cost? Oh, we need to have a cost saving exercise. These men are two expensive, get rid of them. And so it goes on. Playing devil's advocate, running a ship aground is a standard procedure for all Captains if capsize or singing is likely.

You can see in the final shot just how much uncontrolled seawater is onboard, ship is very ass heavy. Ever been in a part sunk yacht, handles like a constant nightmare. Can imagine that it only took a little more seawater washing around to have enough momentum to flip the ship, very lucky the tug boat was not taken with it.

Five Oceans Salvage reported Saturday that the vessel sank at 1730 local time at a chartered depth of 4,400 meters. The vessel turned over by the stern at approximately 1335 local time after having developed a severe stern trim, prompting the tug Ionian Sea FOS to use the tow line quick release in anticipation of Benita’s imminent sinking.

Your video has So many good and unusual scenes that I hesitate to point out the weak spots. The sound level for the back round music is very distracting. I tried turning down the sound on my IPad and that helped. I think the actual physical setup for ship salvage is where my interest lies. More videography time spent on the physical aspect of the operation would seem worth doing. Setting up tow cables, on the spot videos of the actual repair made to the hull. Your video crew does great work and captures the massive project with all the attending helicopters, massive sea going tugs and the huge tasks involved in just towing an otherwise sound ship just a few hundred yards to safety. The in flight helio shots were unique and added another aspect of drama to an other wise static project. Except for the equipment and men moving here and there on and near the ship there is no action, I mean the ship doesn't move an inch, until it is dragged free of the basalt outcropping and returned to the open sea. I would like to have seen the actual movement off the rocks. Since the salvage of the ship was the point of this video. I liked it very much and am going to sucrose. Thank you the real purpose of this video

The geared bulker Benita ran aground on reefs near the small city of Mahebourg, Mauritius, on June 17, reportedly due to an attempted mutiny and a brawl among her 23 Taiwanese and Filipino crew. The London P&I Club - the Benita's insurer - said in a statement that the vessel had grounded because "a crew member . . . suffered a serious medical episode which led to him attacking one colleague before causing extensive damage to the engine room systems that led to a loss of power to the vessel."

Maybe I'm just missing something but why not simply build a large box that covers the damaged area and weld it over the hole. A lot less work, a lot more secure, and it wouldn't have sunk.

@@bomorvish5113 It really did not look very good with the back of the ship was rather riding low on the water and the front riding high. Then it was towed from the back. I was wondering if water was still coming in. It appears there was quite a bit of water still entering the hull.

Why?

@pokeyrailfanning 4 жыл бұрын
@@orfeous It took on to much water that's why you can see the stern low in the water. it sank from the stern and is laying at the bottom about 4,400 feet down and 100 miles out from the coast. they said the stern starting dipping under more and more but they couldn't really do anything because of how far out they were, then they realized that it was going down fast, they released the tow lines so it wouldn't drag the tugs down and it sank stern first and capsized over and sank.

They wanted to towe it to Alang, India to scrap it. But it actually sank just a few days after the end of this video, some 150 kilometers north of Mauritius during the tow.

Its definitely not a shame as they prevented pollution and prevented the vessel from further damage.. who knew it would sank afterwards, they tried their best..and it was a must to remove the vessel from the lagoon, she couldnt remain here forever, or goes where the wave would took her to...either she floats again or made to sink in the ocean itself..It a great success for the team..
