Will it RUN? Can we SAVE the old FORD Bucket / Service Truck? ~ 1990 Ford F800 Diesel Truck Rescue

So my friend Mike asked me to help him bring this 1990 Ford F800 back to life. Apparently he acquired it a few years ago, but never got around to moving it, and now the property owners want it gone or they'll end up scrapping it.
We can't let THAT happen, so today's plan is to bring this old truck back to life and see if we can get it out of there!!
It's apparently been sitting there for about 15+ years, so it's bound to have some issues! It's gonna be a good one!

Man I’ve noticed a ton of negative comments on here. I’m a diesel mechanic. Been one for 20 years. I’ve also been where I’ve had to work on something with limited tools and service data and had to figure out a way, any way, to achieve the goal. You got the truck running. You got it moved. Honestly I could watch salvage workshop videos every day hes saving older equipment that had plenty of life left in them which otherwise would be scrapped, it's clear to everyone who's watched him working on some of the things that he loves every second of what he does honestly I cant wait for his next video then the video after that and so on

Yep, in a fully sorted shop, these methods seem barbaric. But in the wild with limited tools, a lot of school trained mechanics would have never got this old girl going.

Few things about running a bucket truck of that kind if you have future plans. Old rusty outriggers? Wire wheel the outrigger legs clean to bare metal, grease them. The side you put down first should be the side you pick up last, this helps on an old rig. Outriggers when truck is on a slope? Level the truck first with the downhill side outriggers then put down the up hill side. In most cases outriggers do not need much more than ground contact, no need to push down hard unless soft ground or leveling. This will prevent the outriggers from getting stuck. Pushing down hard to do what you did was fine though. Do not try leveling technique if truck is sloped front to back, always best to keep tires firmly on the ground when in the bucket. And that style of boom, not my favorite but still fine. Use the lower controls to run the boom before flying in it yourself to see if it’s safe. Most important test is bringing the upper boom over center, they have been known to drop, keep clear. You probably won’t be flying in that Bucket soon anyways hahaha. ABSOLUTELY, DO NOT, lift 2,000 lbs with that jib, even though it says 2,000lbs on the chart. I run brand new versions of this truck and our maximum worst case emergency lift we do is 1,400lbs. I’d be surprised if the brake on that jib winch holds 1,000lbs. 1,000 lbs is the most you should lift with that in good condition. We’ve had guys who have lifted 1,600 lbs on the jib and they admitted they would never ever try it again. Another known thing to watch out for in the world of bucket trucks is any boom with steel cables for bucket leveling. Note the condition of the steel cables before flying in it as the cables have been known to let go, dump the bucket over and the guy flying in it. Wrote this just in case you do decide to operate it further

This is some sage advice. I worked in the periphery of a tree business for years and many bad things can happen when outriggers and lifting cables are in the mix. As soon as I saw that winch I was thinking I wouldn’t try lifting more than 500 pounds in its current state. Then he read that label and I’m like “Nope”! Hope they take your advice and do things incrementally. 🤞

Out of curiosity, is this thing seriously made to be used to lift something while somebody is in the bucket? I could understand a combo, lifting from the ground with nobody in the bucket, or using it as a bucket truck, but lifting with somebody in there?

@@timderks5960 yup! The boom is called a “material handler” and is made to lift things while there is someone in the bucket. But you do not have to be in the bucket to do so, there are both lower and upper controls.

And on a further note, especially with a well aged bucket you should definitely wear a harness. Unfortunately your harness lanyard will get hooked to a ring attached to the bucket from the factory. The thing with your bucket is that the bucket is on the same spindle as the jib. If the spindle is at all comprised and in the very unlikely event the spindle brakes off, you will go down with the jib and the bucket. You will be miles ahead in the safe direction if you attach a d ring to the end of the boom to hook your lanyard to so if the bucket does fall off you are hooked to the boom

That 7.8 is bullet proof. We ran them for years in power line equipment. I think the first thing I would have done would replace the fuel filters and properly bled the system, put good batteries in. Could have saved you some time.just sayen.

Those Brazilian built 7.8 engines could practically run on sand. Merlin Marine was pulling over 1,000 hp out of them for boat racing applications. It was originally in the Ford Cargo low COE mated to a short throw 5 speed that felt more like driving a car than a truck. Hard to kill those little 6s and they’re just a rock solid powerplant.

Keep em coming , if we were neighbors , we have lots of old stuff to share . I think the tires could use 60 or 70 psi , that will help tremendously ,just from a quick observation . Thats a cool truck . It would make a awesome shop truck for sure . The winch is a bonus too. Good score on that old truck . I just picked up a 10 wheel drive FWD Crane . It has super low range , 4th gear is almost a slow walking speed . I got it running and everything still works , crane winch boom etc. I understand your passion .

Great job on getting it going and moved, that is a fine little material handling bucket. That jib on the bucket will lift a lot of weight, I think near 1 ton depending on the model (oh, I see you mentioned that at the end). We used those trucks to hang single phase transformers with 1 man, great units.

Just a small sugestion for next time u find ur self in this situation, crack open the top of the injectors and use the hand pump u have on your tank to draw all the air out. U crack open the injectors one by one while turning over the engine by hand, make the job a lot easier. Btw love your chanel

Did you pump up the "primer" pump ? Located on the injector pump, the round knob Fuel really should go through the lift pump first and then to the injector pump The injector pump doesn't have enough suck to feed itself and sooner or later will wear out the injector pump prematurely

That was the Ford Brazilian Diesel made in Brazil a modified for the road ag engine. I had 13 in school buses many went a quarter of a million miles original starters, no oil leaks, injectors and pumps never touched. Throttle linkage was a nightmare always started in cold weather, but were a torquee engine, would eat AT545 Allisions. They rode like a tank.

You can always use both batteries but run them in parallel positive positive negative to negative give you twice the amount of cranking apps do it the other way and you'll have 24 V you could burn up everything under the dashboard
