Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is becoming increasingly prominent in our society. With constant conversation about concerns of potentially displaced jobs, fueling online bias, and spreading misinformation, the future of AI raises one simple question: Is it hurtful or helpful?
Howard University was honored to host an interactive conversation on artificial intelligence moderated by President Ben Vinson III, in discussion with OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman. This episode of At Howard was recorded in January 2024 and aired April 8th 2024.
Guests also include Prof. of Biochemistry Dr. William Sutherland.

@@izzy_hatake That’s fine to dislike me from my comment (kinda odd since you don’t know me). My comment was about hating a scenario, not a person. It’s rude to suck up all the air in the room for your cause as if you’re the central character and no one else matters. Everyone wanted to ask something there obviously and time was limited, so to hog all of the time and space is just self centered.

@@donharris8846 cry me a river. Comprehension must not be your strength. “I dislike people who think like you”. It’s how you think that I take exception to. They needed to be heard and this was an opportunity that presented itself. Whether you approve or not is irrelevant.

I think a lot of the questions in this were predicated on a misunderstanding of AI's implications. When AGI is achieved there isn't any concrete skill that will allow a human to retain economic value. We need a fundamental restructuring of economics.

@@yubbityyubba7749 Yes he's sandbagging like crazy. Many of the statements he makes about exponential capability increase and AGI within the decade aren't congruent/conducive to humans being anything but a bottleneck. There's one key factor that Altman always glosses over. The human bandwidth to consume services, content, and products will NOT increase. However, if AI will greatly accelerate human capabilities to generate all these things, seemingly exponentially, what happens in an economy? The Web itself is already well on its way to generating far more content than is consumable.

We should switch to a new system, capitalism is a trash one anyway, rich get richer and poor get poorer, most people can't even afford a house anymore. I would understand if everyone had equals chances, but its only getting worse and worse, and we're all driven by money not by logic and feelings. The problem is, that if we increase our production by alot, then we will increase the quality of life for everyone, but at the same time we will kill creatvity, motivation, because there will literally be nothing left to do, except to experiment and maybe do things for fun

Great Interview. Chat GPT is truly a transformational technological platform. GPT4 is AGI. Firstly,: I cannot believe neither the President, Dr. Sutherland, or the students asked about OpenAI's partnership with Figure Robotics. Second: Earlier in the interview Sam mentioned a great point on paying contributors to the gpt platform. Would like to learn more about that program that compensates contributors to the growth and development of the model. The chats with gpt are my valuable insights, conversations, plans, mindsets, attitude towards how I view life. It is my personality in digital form and because it's me, human, I like the idea of getting compensated for contributing to the growth and development of the model. Democratized finance with bitcoin as a form of payment would be terrific! Curious if OpenAI has plans to open a branch for Consulting Services, coaching businesses on how to leverage the Platform within their current framework, as an enhancement. Similar to someone having a gartner + pitchbook tech stack. What would that model look like? Thanks Sam

Isn't it amazing how a single thread is pulled that inspires not only soul agency free will inertia frame of reference but gifted us the tools & methods of creating selfless actors of greater good . Nomatter what kind of natural system the Keys to the cosmos and life. It's organically and naturally oriented in a way that ironically follows the foresight of uk & American traditions was born in concert with along side methods of eradicating old world habits needs and demands that drove even good men to do bad things to improve human condition. But the footwork is critical we need experts who are selfless actors properly innovating even if it is temporarily at their expense. It's a very big challenge since we've been in a very anomalous stepping stone period of time that what was modern is now antiquated obstacles. The rest of the world only industrialized after the transitor age they don't have the phase the west have had to climb up steam engine to compartmentalizaion and specialization that had the effects of dissociation from great wholistic perceptions .lost multi skillset abilities .large gathering labor demands condensed living.

Interviewer: “How can we ensure the ethical considerations are prioritized, and what role should industry leaders play in making sure that we have responsible practices?” It’s awkward watching Sam Altman have to respond to questions from the moderators that were obviously written by ChatGPT. He of all people knows ChatGPT-generated text when he hears it, so when he has to respond to it, you can see on his face that he know’s he’s not talking to people, he’s talking to his own chatbot which is speaking to him through the people’s mouths. It’s a weird vibe, for sure.

Many businessmen talk about technology, and they can easily talk for a couple of hours for the so-called "strategy," in high level, but indeed, how deep they understand about the technology? They always talk about the risk of AI having consciousness, but our scientists still don't know what consciousness is and how it works. Based on the neural network and transformer, we will get the AGI work and generate consciousness/self-awareness? This question is just like, "How a kindergarten student to get nobel prize." How bad is a businessman on the driving seat, and he doesn't know the tech...
