I’m a big union fan but Sam Burgess helped bridge that gap between the two codes for me. A phenomenal player who will go down as one of the all time greats. Such a shame that union made him a scapegoat.

As a broncos fan I’m so sad to hear that he is retiring. The first time I heard about this was when I was at school and I got notification from the NRL saying he was retiring.

What a great forward Sam has been. Skilful, committed, tough and a great leader of men. I’m sad to see him end his career this way. He’ll be impossible to replace, I can’t think of anyone to fill his boots. Thanks for your total commitment to the Rabbitohs Sam.

Only by the public schoolboys in the press and those that run the game in England. They hated him not just because he was a league player and was working class but he was the worst kind of working class to them - he was northern working class. I think he got more respect from union worldwide than he did in within the leadership of English rugby. F'kin toffs
