Whenever I see Maguire I think of how he absolutely shafted Merritt in 2014 for no reason. One of the Rabbitohs greatest ever players, one of rugby league’s greatest try scorers, sidelined without any significant drop in form. I sat in the crowd when the Rabbitohs won the GF and with my mates we raised a beer to Nathan Merritt who had retired only a matter of days beforehand and didn’t want to attend the game that historic day.

Merritt was an alright clubman at best. He clearly was just getting too old so old Madge wanted to blood some players.

Merritt will go down as arguably my favourite Bunny of all time, but even he admitted he didn't train as hard as he could have that off season and was playing below his best. AJ's form once promoted vindicated Madge's decision. It truly hurts that Merritt wasn't a part of that grand final win but it was the right call.
