"I was far too scared to hit him, but i would hit him in a heart beat now" speaks so many words to me. I got beat up by an older dude at boxing because he thought i was "cocky" at 13.. i was too scared to do anything back and just took it best i could and ended up bruised, lumped and bleeding - trainers were furious. But you best believe I GOT HIM BACK 4 years later after puberty. Proudest moment to have younger me's back like that and settle a score from the past. Definitely earned his respect

My older brother, my childhood bully turned hero just because he joined the military. He formed my personality and made me fear people I was supposed to love. He manipulated me and my parents stood by saying he would grow out of it. All my interests came from him making me feel fake, and all he did was call me names and push me down. Joining the military did not erase what he did and I won't forget. The day I tell him, and the day he realizes what he has done, that will be the day I truly hit him back.

Hia, Not sure how old you are. Time is a healer. You have to re-discover yourself. You will find that you're okay. All the stuff you carry from your past will fit neatly into a box marked, 'The Past.' That's what it is and only today and the future you make for yourself matters. Surround yourself with people who love you for who you are now. Hey, you're alright ye,'know✨

"I would hit him in a heartbeat now" when the pain inside me gets to much to bear and I can't hold back my inner childs rage, I listen to this song and I fight. Bloody hell, that's eloquently described. I'm 60 and that made me remember so many of the emotions from back then. I'd definitely have cavorted furiously around my bedroom to this back in the day. In my ra ra skirt and bolero jacket, half drunk and fully tearful. Then I'd pull myself back together, redo the make up and pick the grin back up. Damn he's good! Hope he continues to be good too.

I first heard this song on the radio driving back from my wife’s parents on Father’s Day. I was nervous about becoming a dad myself in a few months, but that changed when I heard this song. The lyrics punched me right in the gut and had me in tears once I gave it a proper listen at home. 17 was the worst year for me. My parents got divorced because my alcoholic father had an affair, and my girlfriend of a year and I broke up. I was so sad. So angry. So alone. As I cried over the memories of that pain, I thought to myself that I never want my son to suffer like I did at 17…and that washed away any fears I had about becoming a dad. My son’s here now going on 2 months and I am so grateful.

This is such a deep and timeless song, the meaning can really resonate with so many people from all walks of life. Truly a classic that will go down in history. My music producer friend wrote a song that kinda sounds similar to me although they have completely different meanings, try searching Lonely Gimmick - Stay At Home To Sleep In, we've been through thick and thin so I wanna throw him some love. He does it all himself on his laptop and I'm seriously impressed with his talent

I like the line "I was far to scared to hit him but I would hit him in a heartbeat now. That's the thing with anger it begs to stick around". I've been too scared to hit that person, hit them anyway, and ended up with severe beatings on several occasions because of it. The anger doesn't linger if you did that. The anger only lingers when you didn't. I've also not hit him. And it has only just stopped lingering. To the point you see someone "now" and you don't hit them because knowing you now could is enough to stop that lingering feeling. Brilliant line. (Him/them): as in plural. Not just one person. Just gave it another listen. This seems like maybe another decent Northern working class musician of the likes we haven't seen for a long time. It's the only track of his I've listened to though as yet. I also know that there are a lot of men who will read this and won't post but they know exactly what that means. Not for the same reasons I do but for worse reasons, as kids, in their own family. It's also why a lot of men are angry but are also hurt. But they can't always say why they are. Or away from the family. In the environment they grew up in. Where we we're forced to be men when we were boys, to fight, to be masculine. If ever we haven't been able too we weren't afforded any excuses. And it can linger. So we react badly in situations of conflict and we end up in fights, in hospital, in prisons or with records that prevent us from moving forward in life. When what we needed was someone to say you don't need to fight someone to be a man. It's ok to walk away.

This song is great and I understand how powerful the “I was far to scared to hit him but I would hit him in a heartbeat now” but i think “I see my mother the DWP see a number she cries on the floor encumbered im 17 going under” has got to be the most impactful line. This song was really person for him and I think that line screams that.

I can’t listen to this song without choking up this hits me somewhere I can’t explain teenagers suffer quietly with anger and depression as we feel like we shouldn’t be depressed at such an age with our whole life in front of us mad at the world and not even knowing why but a lot of the time that it’s the future that’s most daunting , when you’ve been dealt a bad hand or had to deal with things way behind your years they take a toll on a still developing brain and you spend the rest of your life trying to shake it no matter how successful or not you may be but you have to crack on and take full advantage of every day you wake up especially the good days which are more and more present as you get older and become more comfortable with your place in the world , this should be in the curriculum at schools every child going through puberty and especially from a difficult back ground should hear this song in my opinion they should know they aren’t alone in these thoughts a lot of us have been there and come out the other side !

It's an awesome amazing song. Being a survivor of childhood molestation it really speaks to me. I'm curious about his past trauma now. We all have scars and its nice to hear inspiring music that helps the healing process.

I'm so sorry. It's something that gets easier to deal with with time, but you never really forget it. You didn't deserve that, no one does. It's the worst thing you can do to a child. I hope that man had to answer for himself eventually. God never lets evil people get away with things. It always bites them in the end. God bless you, I hope you're coping okay. I know sorry from strangers, even one who's been through something similar will never put a dent in the pain, but I hope you know people are here for you, you're not the only one, you're loved, and it isn't your fault.

I cry everytime I listen to this song, it hits me so hard. Because been a teenager is so tough, I made a lot of bad silly mistakes on social media and got bullied a lot because of it. The line “I was far too scared to hit him, but I would hit him in a heartbeat now”. Hits me the most, because only boys ( him) would bully me. Girls would never bully me. I still don’t know how to feel. It hurts a lot 😢💔

Keep going. Find a comfort interest. They always say to talk to someone. Try talking to a friend or trusted adult. Boys are dumb out of their right minds. They always make such foolish mistakes. I bet they’re judging you for something completely harmless.

I believe you had pic of my brother & niece on screen behind you at Glastonbury. Just wondered how you got it as he grew up in Ashington & lived in Bedlington most of his adult life. Unfortunately I didn't see it but my niece did & my daughter. I am almost 75 so I fast forwarded through a lot- especially McCartney- can't stand him, though I have lived in Liverpool since I was 18. I realise you must be busy but would love it if you can find time to reply. Terry. ( can't ask our Pat cos he died about 2 yrs. ago)
