@Best Clips He's discussing meditation. People are usually on a continuous stream of thought in which they have no real control. You can get good at observing your thoughts and stepping outside them. That's what Sam is talking about. Also, the end talks about a strategy of thinking of all the worse situations you could be in that you aren't actually experiencing. Then after you're done imagining worse scenarios, and come back to Earth, you might feel better. These things are not for everyone, but whether or not Sam said something of substance is not up for debate. English is your first language, is it not?

This was two months ago, hope things are shifting for you brother. I worked in the wine trade for five years after not drinking for a few years, and basically became a functional alcoholic. At the risk of sounding like something Sam himself would say - consider BJJ as your entry back into the world of physical movement. It's a beautiful way to get centred, and to find a community of like minded people who are bonded like brothers. Guys and girls who you feel would take a bullet for you. There's something about that sort of community where people are helping each other become killers, so much respect for self and others in that sort of environment. Peace.

Same. It's because he was completely off the point. The question was about people who feel lost and can't find meaning in life, he didn't offer any advice that relates to that, only some generic gratitude stuff that may work for some types of depression but has nothing to do with lack of meaning in life. Also saying "well at least you're not dying from cancer" is such a tone deaf thing to say.

I used to struggle with depression and was very unhappy. For one, don't go it alone. Seek professional help as soon as possible, or at least speak with family and friends. However I found several actions to be very helpful in making my life better, all of which I was able to do on my own. They may be worth a try for you. 1. Spend very little or no time on social media. We are not meant to worry about the lives of others so much. 2. Spend more time outside, exercise is ideal but even a walk down the street or on a nature trail is a good start. 3. If you hate your job and feel stuck, start learning a higher value skill in your spare time. Your efforts will pay off. 4. If you feel totally alone, learn to be responsible for the life of another creature, such as a pet or even a plant. 5. Make small connections with people you pass by looking them in the eye and offering a friendly nod or hello. It takes courage to try different things, and it takes time for them to work, but I have been much more satisfied with life ever since - and the people around me are happier in my presence than ever before. Isn't that worth pursuing? You can do it too. Good luck.

One thing I wonder is, way back when before all the tech we have today to connect the world in a moment...perhaps the folks of that era weren’t so distracted by so much connection and knowing and were far more aware of the dirt beneath their feet and the subtle sounds of the natural world. Maybe that far simpler connection was a healthy way to live.

The Default Purpose. Make yourself happy. Ask what little or big thing can I enjoy today? What little thing can I enjoy next? Then as you have 'The Happy Flow' started you can move onto: what can I do to put a smile on someone else's face today, what can I do to make someone feel good today or just stick with the default purpose. Hope that made someone experience a happy feeling or a lifetime of them - I am going to play a fab album now to enjoy it!

ive been a fan of Sam for years but i don't think you'll get far with this method. i understand mindfulness meditation but i really dont believe you can just 'tell yourself a better story' to solve problems in your life. that may be something that effectively alleviates momentary pain, but the ability to live with your problems ultimately helps you turn a blind eye to them as they get worse and worse, until you cant just meditate them away anymore. the best solution is to use meditation to genuinely identify the problem and a solution.

I just discovered a talk with Joscha Bach on the Lex Fridman Podcast the other day, and it blew my mind (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hl6VgWaDiL-leK8). Still a lot to process there. Then I see this clip, and Sam Harris uses a couple similar terms that really resonated with me. "Changing the state of the system", "tell yourself a better story", and "engineer/change the code you're running". As a software engineer, this is such a relatable way to think about this stuff. I've been depressed for years and never even knew it until recently. Man I wish I had heard some of these concepts earlier. For anyone that benefited from this clip, I highly suggest you watch the Joscha Bach interview I linked above. It's three hours long but it is profoundly eye-opening. Changing your thoughts/your focus can work, when you are just about to go down a depressive train of thought and can stop yourself that way. When you are actually already depressed this is shitty advice, it will just make it worse. You will start feeling guilty in addition to being depressed, because you are told you don´t have it bad enough to feel so shitty.
@Choo-choo-chookcha
@Choo-choo-chookcha 4 жыл бұрын
@Samael51760 Don't buy into it, meaning neither don't marry/have kids because of the pressure nor do. Clarify in your head what exactly do you want and if it will pass in 5-10-20 years. Most of the marriage pressure comes from traditional norms, which are not true for every single person, but at the same time they are true for 99.9999999% of people. 10 years ago or so, when I first came across pressure about marriage and kids, I decided to choose on my own. When I found a girl that I liked I took my time to figure out if we need to marry and we did couple of years later. After that we took time to understand if we need kids, we thought it through and she's pregnant now because of our conscious decision. Through all those years we understood each other and we are ready for kids. At the same time I see too much families where people marry or have kids too soon to understand what they're doing. So, having an honest conversation with youself and your partner, thinking through may save both of you from a lot of problems. However, I also see how people mature because of marriage and kids, sometimes making me think if those people would mature at all if they didn't marry. In essence, there's no clear answer. If you jump into family stuff immature, you might find youself trapped with a partner you hate and children you blame for wasting you youth. If you refuse the family stuff, you might find youself regretting that years later. There are biological and mental limits to having and raising kids and certainly there are not so many people that would partner with you and will be willing to wait for you to make a decision across a decade. You have to both take your time to think and not waste too much of it. Just make sure that you're simply not afraid. If you make decisions out of fear, fear will pass, but consequences will stay. I see a lot of people avoiding responsibility because they think they're stressed enough. But almost always what those people need in their life to feel fulfilled is exactly the responsibility they avoid. There's no shortage of reasons. If you're articulate enough you can rationalise every point of view there is and believe it to be the final truth. In last 10 years I've seen my own thoughts shift and change, which led me to wanting to have a family, but I'm not sure if every person have those 10 years or if they'll need 10 years to make the same conclusions. Does it sound that my explaination made the question more complicated? Because in reality it is. All I can say is that if you're afraid it is better to start a family than not. There's too little of a chance you're one of those people who'll live through a meaningful life without a family, those are incredibly rare, when fear of responsibility is common. If you're still young try to mature a little more and that fear will most probably dissipate. And partner? If you're mature, you'll be in no trouble finding one. Most people don't care for looks, status and wealth as much as pop culture makes us believe. All this may be attractive, but for long term relationship people look for a genuine person and not a good looking sack of money.

Ok, he said three, they were kinda vague and I didn't really count three. I do want to point out that his last suggestion, as generally framed, was equivalent to "you can't be sad because some people have it worse" which is deep in "gee thanks, I'm cured" territory. But also, how conventionally middle class his specific scenarios were. "When you're driving your car to work..." well, I wish I could afford a car and had a job. I wish I had two children to be concerned about. Depression and a sense of hopelessness and meaninglessness comes from NOT having anything to be grateful about (which I guess was the second).

Good points you make. It's a tough issue since there could be a physiological/chemical component and objectively difficult situational component to the depression. Easy to intellectualize and theorize - I've spent 20 years with CBT as a guiding principle and I acknowledge "thinking about catastrophic possible outcomes" is not useful and a great depression trigger - but this aspect is NOT the only "cause and effect" of major depressive disorder. I'm now 75, under financial hardship, with physical illnesses, no medical care available in the country I live now, under lengthy pandemic lockdown, surrounded by fear of crime as the lockdown, unemployment, businesses bankruptcies has triggered gangs into violent robberies of vulnerable people etc. Listening to Sam Harris' depression "quick advice" under these circumstances is not useful at all...rather the contrary.

Let me prove to you that you have something to look forward to, its paradise. If this world exists, in all its beauty and complexity why is it impossible that paradise/heaven do exist? let me give evidance now: The proof of Islam are the scientific miracles of the Qur'an, which muslims believe to be 100% the word of God "Allah". It is a book of 6000 verses of which more than 1000 speak about science. Not one mistake or contradiction. 17:15 "Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We sent a messenger." Lets start: 1. And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander. 1400 years ago, Quran (51:47) - Recently discovered continuous expansion of the Universe. The expansion being faster than the Speed of light and a mystery to science makes this sign special. 2. “And you see the mountains, thinking them rigid, while they will pass as the passing of clouds. [It is] the work of Allah, who perfected all things. Indeed, He is Acquainted with that which you do”. 27:88. If you read this verse carefully you will learn 2 things: The Quran knows that the earth is rotating. And that the earth is round. On a stationary flat earth module, you don’t have rotation and by that you don’t have a flat earth. Reminder: Arabs 1400 years ago didnt have the tools to know this. 3. Have We not made the earth as a bed, and the mountains as pegs? (Qur'an, 78:6-7) Newly its been proven that mountains have deep roots to stabilize the earth just like tent pegs, Visually and functionally. 4. Did the unbelievers not realize* that the heavens and the earth were one solid mass, then We tore them apart, and We made every living being out of water**? Will they, then, not believe (that We created all this)? it's the Big bang that disbelieving scientists talked about in recent times. Undeniable evidance of a devine hand in the Quran***JUST THIS WATER VERSE (DURING THE 7TH CENTURY ARABIC DESSERT) SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO CONVINCE ANYONE TO READ MORE. 5. No! If he does not stop, We will take him by the naseyah (front of the head), a lying, sinful naseyah (front of the head)! 96:15-16 -The Qur'an calls the front of a mans Head “lying”. It's recently discovered that the small Prefrontal lobe which is exactly at the front of the head, that is responsible for lying and deceptiveness. 6. He has set free the two seas meeting together. There is a barrier between them. They do not transgress. 55:19-20 Not a miracle but a sign of a merciful creator. - Allah is telling humans that he has put a barrier for us between the 2 kinds of Water, one is salty, one is sweet and palatable. He does these things for us out of mercy, as powerful as he is, he isnt forced to do anything. Just look around at, you will see how submissive He has made everything to humans 7. Or (the unbelievers’ state) is like the darkness in a deep sea. It is covered by waves, above which are waves, above which are clouds. Darkness, one above another. If a man stretches out his hand, he cannot see it. 24:40 - The Quran is giving signs about the newly discovered deep (Internal) waves of the sea. Not only there is Surface waves but deep invisible ones that 1400 years ago only its creator knew of. Many more are there. I couldn’t count all sigs of the Quran here. . There are many different things that indicate a divine hand in the Quran. 1. The word “Day” mentioned 365 times in the Quran (Solar year) one out of many so go and search "number miracles of the Quran". The Speed of light can be accuratly calculated from one verse of the Quran that talks about Allahs angels. 2. The word "spider" in Arabic is "Ankabout". it is 100% male when said so. and you give it the "He" treatment. Allah mentions the spider few times and calls it "He" also. BUT the one time, God said "She" to the "Ankabout", he was referring to the Spiders house ("her house"). Now its scientifically proven that every spider type on earth (small, big, from Africa, Europe, America, doesn’t matter) Only the female of which builds houses. The same thing with the Honeybee, Allah chose “she” in chapter of the “Bee” when he talked about the worker bees, who are discovered recently to be 100% female. 3.Iron: There is also an entire chapter in the Quran which is named Iron. This shows how important Iron is to mankind, way more important than gold. it is essential for today’s Industry. God said in the beginning of the chapter: "And We sent down Iron to mankind" So why did God use the word "sent down" rather than one of his favorite words "Created". Iron was sent down after the formation of the original earth, from Space in the form of meteorites, so it gets buried underground for us to use when we are advanced enough to mine it, because of that "sent down" is more accurate. Yes there is no "Up" or "Down" in space but if it falls from the earths atmosphere to its ground, its "sent down." 4. The Quran has many "challenge verses" the most famous is: “And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah (chapter) the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful”. “But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers”. Quranic chapters can be as short as 10 words. no one could ever bring something the like of the Quran. many have tried and all of them failed miserably. 5. The precision of the Quran is amazing. “Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction” 4:82. After months of research I found out that the rules in the Quran are reasonable and make perfect sense. No weird, ancient people rules. No Jihad wars. And many of what you know about Islam is probably Arabic tradition and not Gods words (Quran). Fun fact only 20% of Muslims are Arabs. God chose Arabic because it was a very advanced language at that time. There are very small % of people pure enough to be called true Muslims, because true Muslims fear God and abstain from all wrongdoings. Quran chapter 2 verse 8 to 9: 8. Among the people are those who say, “We believe in God and in the Last Day,” but they are not believers. 9. They seek to deceive God and those who believe, but they deceive none but themselves, though they are not aware. "We will show them Our Signs in the universe, and in their ownselves, until it becomes manifest to them that this (the Quran) is the truth. Is it not sufficient in regard to your Lord that He is a Witness over all things? " There Is a Mathematical Miracle in the Quran That Proves It Is the Word of God "Say: 'If the whole of mankind and Jinns were to gather together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they backed up each other with help and support.'" (Chapter 17:88) The number of times the word “Man” is mentioned: 24 times. The number of times the word “Woman” is mentioned: 24 times. • “Dunia” (one of the Arabic words for ‘life’) is mentioned 115 times, and “Aakhira” (an Arabic word for ‘after life’) is also mentioned 115 times. • “Malaika” (the Arabic word for angel) is mentioned 88 times, and “Shaytan” (Satan) is mentioned 88 times. • “Life” is mentioned 145 times. “Death” is mentioned 145 times. • “People”: 50 times. “Messengers”: 50 times. • “Corrupt”: 50 times. “Benefit”: 50 times. • “Iblees” (king of devils): 11 times. “Seek refuge from Iblees”: 11 times. • “Museebah” (calamity): 75 times. “Thanks”: 75 times. • “Sadaqah” (spending): 73 times. “Satisfaction”: 73 times. • “People who are mislead”: 17 times. “Dead people”: 17 times. • “Gold”: 8 times. “Easy life”: 8 times. • “Zakat” (taxes Muslims pay for the poor): 32 times. “Barakah” (blessings of one’s wealth): 32 times. • “Mind”: 49 times. “Noor” (light): 49 times. • “Tongue”: 25 times. “Sermon”: 25 times. • “Desire”: 8 times. “Fear”: 8 times. • “Hardship”: 114 times. “Patience”: 114 times. • “Muhammad”: 4 times. “Sharee’ah” (Muhammad’s teachings): 4 times. If this is not enough, now please look at the number of times the following words occur: • ‘Month’: 12 times • ‘Day’: 365 times! • ‘Sea’: 32 times. ‘Land’: 13 times. ‘Sea’ + ‘Land’ = 32 + 13 = 45. % of Sea = 32 / 45 (x100%) = 71.11111111 % % of Land = 13 / 45 (x100) = 28.88888889 % Modern science has only recently discovered that the above figures represent the exact proportions of Sea and Land on Earth! Finally, I ask that if you have any doubt as to the accuracy of these numbers, by all means, please check them for yourself.

Sam Harris doesn't believe in relative morality. He believes being depressed is, in truth, a bad thing. Not subject to being turned into a good thing by a bunch of people taking a vote. Some atheists fall into the logical trap that morality is subjective, but Sam Harris is too smart for that. And he's right. If you're depressed and lost, you need to patiently fight your way out of it, prepare for setbacks now and then, but learn to endure and push. I would recommend staying off the antidepressants if possible, but if you need to take them to go out into the world and accomplish your moral purpose, then do what you have to do.

Well... Yes, he has a point, and you can certainly train your mind towards a more positive view, but there could be a thousand steps between feeling depressed, and then actually being able to do the things he says. It depends on who you are, why you are in that situation and how long you have been there. Its rarely as simple as “think good things, and you will be happy.”
@NGEternal

I think you’re focusing too much on the part where he says you can also shift the narrative. What’s even more important is to merely be aware of whatever narrative there is playing inside the movie screen of your mind right now. The untrained mind is always thinking. It’s that thinking, that rumination and imagination, that keeps us in misery. Mingyur Rinpoche says “if you see the river then you are not in the river”. If you are aware of a thought then you cannot be captivated by it. You do this again and again, suddenly “waking up” to what you find yourself automatically thinking, and eventually you’ll be able to snap out of these trains of thought that make you depressed. I would argue that’s even more important than injecting positive thoughts, although as you say that is helpful. In either case it’s totally unrelated from your actual life circumstance. What were talking about is not your life circumstance but the current circumstance of the inside of your own mind. There is no law of the universe that says that if your life is objectively depressing you must also feel depressed.

Yeah, I really like Sam, but as a person who suffers with severe depression all I hear him saying here is, "Just don't think about your problems." That's not to say I think mindfulness isn't useful. It's just that my problems are actually real, and don't boil down to simply lacking optimism.

@Manog Shama You guessed right :) There are many different motivational factors in our minds all the time, we always follow the strongest at any moment. Lets say you just havent got the "willpower" to stop smoking - you tried many times and it didnt work. Then one day your doctor tells you, that you have lung cancer and will die within a year unless you stop smoking - now you suddenly dont have any problem with quitting, you just stop from one day to the next. Where did all that "willpower" come from? It wasnt willpower, but merely a very heavy motivational factor that got added to you mind. Its all about what motivates you at any given time.

Also, to change the narrative we tell ourselves, we need to dig deep to understand the root of where they first originated from (e.g. what traumatic experiences caused us to think this way), and how these limiting beliefs shaped our survival behavior and influenced the physiological responses of our nervous system. It is a lot of personal work and education of oneself. No one will sit to do this work for you, you got to gather the resources available for you out there and start making sense of what’s happening for you at both perception neuroception levels.

@CollegeStudent 94 You literally said the same thing only 10x longer. You are also telling him to try harder. Just like every single human being needs to when they aren't feeling good about themselves/ their position in their existence. Everyone has problems, and the only way to get through them is to try harder and to change your thought process by changing your actions.

He did say in the clip he is pro pharmaceutical intervention for people with physiological clinical depression, and he also stated that this advice may help to drive people from negative thinking which many people just call depression but isn't 'true depression'. That said, even people with severe forms of depression, his advice will still be very useful for some people.

I thought same thing when he said cancer but I get the idea that it could be worse in some other way and u would wish u back in this moment. Like if I had know 30 years ago how shitty my life would be now I would be happiest person back then. It about stopping the shit thinking which is easier said then done of course but meditation and mindfulness is one way to try, which is his schtick and I am doing it.

Great advice once you know about meditation. Otherwise everything about "rewriting" the story sounds nice but not actionable. Meditation is the method by which you build the muscles to be able to rewrite the story in your head.

I appreciate Harris but like many intelligent people they tend to divorce themselves from practical reality. Anxiety and depression and other mental illnesses are rooted in the mind lacking the tools and ability that do often are offered by those with clear well developed minds. The question, and it’s a big question, is how to you make someone void of a capable mind build the foundational tools require to pull yourself out of depression. Until that happens everything else can’t happen, the mind can be incredibly stubborn.

I use a similar technique I call "The Old Man and the Time Machine". Where you imagine yourself as an old man with regrets, and the concept of what he wouldn't give to use a time machine to go back to this moment in time, right now. What he'd do, and change, things he'd no longer take for granted. I find that perspective useful.
