I know a guy that lost $350k at the Bellagio over a month. He bragged about how they comp'd his stay. I asked him what game he was playing and he said electronic slots. Lost all respect. Not even a poker player or craps, or roulette or some shit. Losing $350k to a shitty video game. I'd have more respect if he lost $500k using heroin.

I used to work with a guy who was a degenerate gambler. He wasnt very open about it and none of us knew for about a year but that dude's life sounded extremely stressful and all his fault. Imagine taking out a loan for one year's salary and losing it in 4 hours, only to take your whole paycheck to the casino the next weekend and win it all back plus $25k. He came in one Monday with a new truck and he said he won $50k playing blackjack. Instead of buying the truck outright he financed it and gambled the rest of the money away.

Casino workers have literally come out and said exactly how slots work. Cheaper slots are set to pay out more often, but have smaller jackpots. More expensive slots are set to pay out less often but have larger jackpots. They have advisers whose job it is to track data, from time spent on each slot, to how much people spend on average, even demographics like age and wealth are accounted for. They make algorithms and then set the slots to those algorithms, and tip the scales just enough so people don’t notice but they can still control most outcomes.

12:05 Sam is right. I've been working in the casino industry for the past 6 years and pretty much every casino has the same games. There might be a few differences, like some minor providers not being available, or country restrictions. Other than that they have the same slots. Depending on the regulations of your country, and wether or not it is an online casino, the average payout percentage might vary. In Germany they recently changed the regulations to make the payout percentage lower. Probably to reduce the addictivness of the slots, since they use the small wins to give a sense of being able to make your money back, among other things that our industry considers "not customer friendly" which is code for "this is costing us revenue". Also physical casinos have a lower payout rate on average, because they have higher expenses so they have to account for that (rent/property taxes, security, etc.) That being said, the payout percentage doesn't mean anything. First of all it is calculated over billions of rounds, so unless you have a disposable income of like at least 100m the percentage doesn't apply. And then even of it does apply, you end up losing everything because you gradually lose more and more. For the sake of argument lets say the payout is constantly 95% and you have 100$ to play with. You play, for example 100 rounds at 1$ per round, you end up with 95$ after that. But it already got you hooked so you think "if I play some more rounds I might get a big win". So you will play until you have no money left, because that big win has the tiniest chance of being won. And people have the misconception that the more you play the closer you get to that big win, but the chances stay the same
