Man. I just turned 24 and everything he said is crazy spot on. Being directionless was all fun and games for early adulthood, especially with all the covid nonsense happening, but suddenly shit has clicked and got very real. It’s no longer comfortable being a grown ass man and not knowing wtf to do with my life. Realizing I won’t have health insurance in less than 2 years is also very terrifying. Not tryna break my arm and catch a $100k hospital charge. Working on fixing these things. Let’s hope it’s possible in time.

NUMBER ONE: do not become an alcoholic. my mom died when I was 24 and I wasted ages 24 - 31 in a blink of an eye drinking. 7 or 8 stays in the hospital for acute pancreatitis as a result, and countless squandered opportunities & talents. I'm now picking up the pieces slowly but surely. Still not fully past my demons but I'm doing much better thanks to naltrexone and therapy. Do not drink. if you think your life is bad and miserable, wait until you're a miserable alcoholic on top of it. then you will know true suffering. remember, you can accomplish ANYTHING YOU WANT as long as you do not have the burden of alcoholism or drug addiction

I want to say congratulations but a lot of recovered alcoholics in their mid 30s-40s I know like to fuck with young girls (like teens) for some reason. As long as you aren't like that then I'm proud of you. But as a 17 year old myself, I see so many recovered alcoholics and addicts to other things in their 30s and older want to fuck with girls my age. It's weird. Anyway if you're watching this kind of content I'm sure you aren't a big piece of shit like that or else you'd be lurking in the comment sections of bands like the strokes looking for young alt girls to groom. Idk what this comment even is anymore man but good on you for recovering I've just learned from past experiences to stay the fuck away from recovered/recovering alcoholics.

You have to find purpose (career, religion, charity, family, etc.) and chase it no matter how trivial it may seem. Sometimes it takes years to find. As a young man you go through hell comparing yourself to peers. Look inward not outward. Life inherently is a cruel joke, so find your purpose and pursue in until things start to work.

Im a psychiatric nurse and I talk to many young patients each day at work in very similar situations. Sam really hit the nail on the head here. I tell my pts straight up, what I say to you isn’t going to help you instantly. Everyone has a different way of coping with hardship, it’s impossible to tell someone something specific to there situation. Like Sam said, its about finding your own direction through trial and error and just enduring that suffering. Also, I would 100% avoid the use of any substances (besides proper use of prescription medications) to cope with hard times. There thousands of healthy alternatives, it’s just about finding what works for you. Just remember if you are struggling, do not go through it alone. Find that one person you can trust and lean on. I promise you there is better days ahead, you have to suffer through it and you will come out the other side a stronger person.

As someone who lost their father young, he's not wrong. Someone who was in a similar spot at my age told me it never gets easier, just more bearable and they are right. There is no easy way out, you just hurt for a while until you start to put the pieces back together slowly but surely. One piece of advice for anyone thats feeling lost, start making small habitual changes now. A percent gain everyday compounds to a ~30x increase compared to flatlining if you decrease a percent everyday. So start making the changes now so you can put yourself in a place you want to be a year from now.

Experiencing this now in my late 30's. I'm lucky though, I have a support structure. My wife and kid are sources of motivation to keep me going, but there are days where its rough to just get out of bed. All I can say to anyone who may be in a similar situation is its okay to wander. Try different things, and don't get complacent in your confusion/anxiety. The less you do, the more you'll dwell on your situation. Make new friends, try new hobbies. Don't be afraid to fail or even drop new hobbies that you just picked up that aren't doing anything for you. WORK OUT / physical activity combined with goals for that physical activity is a must!! Do something to build a fire in your belly. That fire will lead you to where you need to go! After about 2 years of being rudderless, I can honestly say that I am hopeful for my future. I have some things cooking up on the horizon. I'm just pissed I wasted a year trying to smoke my pain away.

Philosophies like Schopenhauer and other pessimists might seem contradictory to living positively in dark times; but it's really more of an explanation of how dark life can be. Approaching the idea of existential suicide shouldn't be taken literally. Everyone has their dark night of the soul, like events that emotionally cut deep but sometimes you just have to jump into the cold dark abyss just to say you've been there and you survived.

I'm about to turn 25 and have only now been able to find a job. Haven't started yet but I'm fairly positive, not for the job itself, which is nothing that I wish to pursue long term, but financially it will allow me to expand upon my creative ambitions. I began to despair at 18, I was held back a year at school, I was alone, and I didn't know where to go moving forward. I think on the late George Sanders mostly introduced through Academic Agent, who died at 65, by his own hands, in a note he wrote "Dear World, I am leaving because I am bored. I feel I have lived long enough. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool. Good luck." If you're feeling rudderless at 20 or at 30 even, then at least wait it out another 35 years and then if need be, well. Between now and then, you have plenty of time to live, and to live again.

Always be real with yourself, you owe yourself a fighting chance & that ain't possible if you can't face the music. Time doesn't heal wounds, but there's still meaning to be discovered in the world and that should be enough to start I think. If some suffering can be turned around into fuel or inspiration of some sort that's a way of moving forward and not just merely coping. Don't ever give real serious stuff the "fake it til you make it" treatment, it will leave you brain damaged and incapable of most things in life, don't sigma grindset your way through grief, but keep moving always, just never give up, that's the big nono.

Time healing all wounds does not mean you'll be fine or fully recouperated. You'll still have a huge, ugly, painful scar that reminds you of that event, that you wish you didn't have. But you learn to live with it I guess. I didn't lose a direct parent but my wife did, and I think you might want to find a partner that loves you. Which is a hard task in and of itself. But my wife said on multiple occasions how grateful she is that I've been supportive to her and that she wouldn't know what to do without me. So I guess that helps. Life's problems are always easier managed with a partner by your side, since you can bounce ideas off one another.
@MegaJackolope
@MegaJackolope Жыл бұрын
You need structure in your life, most likely. It's not for everyone, but even for those it's not I'd argue you have or need more structure than you realize. Mental schisms occur from not being who you think you are or need/want to be. It's the reason for most anyone to lose their shit or slip into depression. Being told to clean the vomit out of the sink in the bathroom at Friendly's at the age of sixteen knowing it's your managers job who told you to, while being unable to quit having to support your single mother when she's overworked and injured from supporting your ass, etc. Those situations between a rock and a hard place are how you feel trapped in your life, without options guidance or any help. Confiding in strangers to let off steam helps a bit, kind of like free therapy because most of therapy is being heard not having your solutions presented to you. Therapists help you think through your problems yourself by asking you the tough questions you may be avoiding or are so 'basic' in the thought process you jumped over them and didn't think maybe you should dump your girlfriend and get a better one, quit weed while you are going thru grief or heavy depression, etc. A lot of issues are things that you already know the answer to, verbalizing things with another person so you have to mentally structure your thoughts before you say them and are judged by a stranger is basically 90% of therapy, if that is what you need to help you out. To get out of your individual situation, I don't have an easy solution. But I do have some very good advice. Like if your room is a trashpit filled with cans and wrappers, you got ants picking at your leftover twinky from last nights bender when you wake up, there's only one thing to do and you know the answer. It's to clean it, and it's going to take one step at a time. You have to go get the bag, put dirty laundry in the corner, pour your empty cans into the sink, and pick one thing up at a time. Any problem you have in life works the same, but we rarely think of it that way in the moment. It can be obvious to those around you, but your panicked anxiety will make you think too far ahead, turn molehills into mountains, piles of laundry into heavy boulders you think you can't move. It's always one step at a time, no matter what. If you have to shawshank redemption your way out of your situation you do it. It's about determining the problem, the steps for the solution, and pacing yourself. Be reasonable, but hold yourself to the expectation. You can learn a new skill spending an hour a day, almost no one does. Stop looking at your phone for 2 hours in the morning, stop buying so many menthols and drinking heavy on the weekends because you are reasoning with yourself that you'll be dead by 50. Things are within your means usually, plan it out and chip away and you won't be in the wind wondering what's next and how you even attempt it.

I enjoyed reading your description of struggles and how many times we know the answer already (hard work) but the mental gymnastics one may do to avoid confronting the problem can keep the mind in a sort of negative-feedback loop. Working out problems with someone else allows you to arrive at the better conclusion without this self-defeating interference. One step at a time, the hardest part is getting in motion. It becomes easier once you're already moving. Thanks for sharing! Have a great day

its not hard to find something to do, if you want a good paying job that's more fun than sitting at a desk all day then you should join a trade. It may not be something that you do forever, but if you don't feel like you have any direction why wouldn't you try to learn as much as possible. I felt like I didn't really have a good idea about what I wanted but than I realized I need to try to become stinking rich by doing things my own way. Never listen to anybody who tries to knock your dreams, hold onto them make it happen, just because someone is miserable with their life and they cant believe that you could ever succeed when they are failing, never let all the things they say affect you, mixing emotions and business is detrimental to growth. That doesn't mean you cant change how your ideas work over time and you have to put in the work, never stop working and researching if you really care that much. Being nihilistic about your situation is not going to help you, but personally I don't know how to see the world any other way, to me nothing matters, shit can upset me when it doesn't go as planned, I think lots of people are like that but I don't let it affect me because at the end of the day everything I do is insignificant, it serves no purpose other than a short lived, inflated sense of happiness that I don't want. But don't let anything bring you down, nothing can come in the way of your plans you cannot let it happen, you have to build structure for your future, abandoning ideas and goals is the worst thing you can do and when you eventually save up some money you wont know what to do with it. Start planning your future NOW, for example I wrote up a business plan for a small car company even though I haven't built a single car, I have mutiple text documents everything from marking processes to how much it would cost to start from scratch to model names and themes, drawings, models and mockups that imitate the real thing, I spend all my spare time looking up different materials for construction, how to electroplate using science to make affordable weather resistant parts, coming up with my own new techniques for rust protection, my own designs for gimmicky features and party tricks, asking people what they think and how they would spend their money, attempting to corner a premium market by offering affordable alternatives, searching for investors, I do everything myself and if anyone wants to invest their time or money they are more than welcome. I do all of it, if only because it keeps me distracted from a living hell. The whole point is to build off of virtually nothing to make something big, that'll give you some fucking direction for sure. Put down your electronics for a few hours, only use them for things like market research and learning about basic science, learn how to produce a product become a bigger part of your community, instead of slaving away at your 9-5 job, do something in the meantime or you will feel like you want to die and there's a good reason for that, you cannot expect to be content if you are too poor to even survive.

@p_a20 the post was written badly. It meant to say that you should exercise instead of seeking material desires. The point of finding God is to transcend your basic animal mind and be closer to divinity. The Christian way is one of penitence and servitude, to put God's glory over your own interests.

Try seeking a relationship with God. Find a church with other young people in it (difficult, but they're out there). Form relationships and find purpose in helping those who have very little. It will fulfil you. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28-30

Don’t turn to religion, that shits a drug too. There’s no difference in the people who preach about religion and the psycho hippies who preach about LSD. Those are the type of people that when something makes them feel good they think others need to experience the same. Just love yourself and do what you want in the short time we walk this earth
@squidwardtennisballs3390
@squidwardtennisballs3390 Жыл бұрын
"Just love yourself and do what you want" is a deeply metaphysical claim that is comparable to a religious claim. Every person on earth has a philosophical worldview, whether they know it or not, that is comparable to an explicit religious worldview because every single worldview will eventually appeal to non-empirically verifiable beliefs. The question is which worldview is true and which isn't. Dr Listle shows in his book 'Ultimate Proof' that the Christian worldview is logically provable because it's the only worldview that can justify all the immaterial preconditions of knowledge (Laws of logic, induction, human rights, identity, etc). Your re7arded athiest worldview cannot justify any of the transcendental preconditions of intelligibility.

This, it's much better to know yourself more than being manipulated by someone else. Being in a cult is just simply wrong most of the times and it isn't always the solution, the manipulation tactics by those who call themselfs as "altruist" imposed at you is not the right way, those people are wrong, they are more selfish, narcissist and fake than what you think. The better thing you can do is to not care about people and what society tells you, find your happines trought what your guts/intuition tells you, what you like, what thing you want to like or what stuff you want to learn, etc. Fullfill your knowlegde and soul, for your lost ones cherrish them everyday, have a good memory on them and feel happy that they raise you. There's thousands of ways to be happy than being in a church or being subconsciently manipulated into one. Just stay strong and fight against destiny. Keep the struggle guys. And also, if you believe in something, do it because of you, not for another one who is an asshole to you.
