The Cars started to diversify their sound starting with their third LP "Panorama" an album so experimental that many fans still don't know about it. In response their record company demanded a hit from their next release. Hence "Shake It Up" was recorded which spawned their first Top Ten single. They delivered more of the same with "Heartbeat City" the album that introduced them to MTV. The two vids you've reacted to are both from that LP.

5:41 Synth was used a lot at this time especially for pop. The Cars were using it on their first album in ‘76, which you should definitely check out. Start with track 1 and work your way through. 8:47 Videos at this time usually had nothing to do with the song.

Nice reaction. Thanks for sharing it. I have to agree with a lot of the other comments here. While the two songs you have done are good songs, the most iconic Cars songs are “Just What I Needed”, “Moving In Stereo”, “My Best Friend’s Girl”, “Bye Bye Love” and “You’ve All I Got Tonight”. In all respect to whomever participated in your Patreon or supporters poll, “Magic”, is a fair Cars song. These earlier ones are pure fresh bangers, which blew us away then and still hold up as quirky and almost progressive pop-rock. Closer almost to Talking Heads or Blondie, or Television, at least in approach, if not in sound or style. Check those out and prepare to be somewhat surprised at how far away “Magic” is, even though only a few years and albums later.

Never get too caught up in trying to make sense of music videos. Most of the time artists/bands had little, if any, input into them. (They were more the brain childs of management and the record company executives.) I've heard many artists saying they basically just showed up on the set and were told where to stand and/or what to do. So it often wasn't part of their vision for the song. And, yes, a fair amount of the Cars songs were played at dance clubs.
@nedrini10555 ай бұрын

I concur with the commenters who recommend “Just What I Needed,” it’s my favorite Cars song, Ben Orr at his best, great guitar hooks, and a great guitar solo by Elliot Easton. Super catchy!
@joelhammond41625 ай бұрын
You’re often asking about the”best” guitarist and Cars’ Elliot Easton rarely ever gets attention or mention, most likely because of the pop/new wave focus, but if you ask many of the pros, Elliot’s name will frequently come up. Few compose better solos that perfectly fit the song. His playing is never technical for the sake of being technical, but despite that it sometimes is. I think the underrated term is overused and thrown around too loosely, but in his case, I think it is fitting.
