The actor Sam Lloyd playing opposite Rob Lowe in this scene. He passed away from cancer. And no: we didn’t lose Sam Seaborn.

Have been watching west wing and arrived at the Sam Lloyd scene when he asks about an unidentified object reentering the atmosphere over Maui. Again a touching memory from an actor who was one of “those guys from that thing.” He’s been gone for 3 years now and he still makes me smile.

Thank you very much for this, Sam should be remembered. Cracking actor. I'm a huge fan of the west wing, and I have enjoyed Mr Lloyd in several other encounters. Obviously Scrubs. The historical GREAT SCOT to his dear ancestor needs to be mentioned. May he rest in power, a fantastic actor. Very much the but of so very many jokes, but he made us laugh oh so very often. How can there be a better cause than making people happy.
@donkeyears4704 Жыл бұрын
what may not come across from this clip is that sam seaborn realizes this is all that bob really has left of his father. he's carrying on his father's lifes pursuits and his legacy. sam comes back into the room and acts all hush hush like he's giving bob the we know you know routine. he's just commiting a kind act to a grieving son who lost his father 3 months ago.
@Hal09i Жыл бұрын
Agree. Sam of course believes the claims being made are nonsense but he see the man in front of him as a son in pain over the loss of his father, honoring him in the only way he knows how. It's a human moment, and Sam being who he is could easily dismiss the guy...but that's not the man Sam is.

I kind of like how almost no mention is made of just how big of a geek Sam is in the show. Recording Secretary of the Princeton Gilbert and Sullivan Society and now a reference about Dungeons and Dragons Camp. These days they'd beat you over the head with his geekdom, because being geek is chic, but in the early 2000s? Just another character trait of his.

BTW, if you've never had the "fun" of dealing with a conspiracy theorist IRL, this is _exactly_ what it's like. I know a couple of them, and a few months ago, one of the local radio stations changed its format from Sports Talk to foreign language, and "Dave" said that he sure hoped that Homeland Security was monitoring it. I made the mistake of asking why, and he informed me that it was broadcasting in Arabic, probably to the ISIS cells in the area. So on my way home, I tuned it in. It was Portuguese. We have a lot of Portuguese speakers in the area, and I know a little of it, so I could pick up what they were saying. Next time I saw "Dave", I told him what it was, and his answer was "And you believed what they told you?" I pointed out that nobody told me, that I recognized the language, and it was Portuguese. To which he replied "Well, if believing that lets you sleep at night..."

I had one of these experiences when talking to a work acquaintance. I speak in a monotone so for people who don't know me very well it's a challenge to figure out if I'm being sarcastic or genuine. So we're chatting away and I sarcastically say "flat earth confirmed." To which he replied "dude!!!!" With an expression on his face like he's trapped in a foxhole and he just saw reinforcements. He then goes on a week long campaign of explaining to me every conspiracy theory his paranoid brain has latched onto while I eat my lunch and see how deep this deranged rabbit hole goes.

I have talked to conspiracists. There are actually two kinds; 1) the plain ignorant, as depicted in your story, and 2) the in-too-deep, who know mountains and mountains of information that forms a coherent picture, of which about 20% is false or unprovable, but which is almost impossible to confront because falsifiability is weakness (in their view) and they know so much more about their lies than you know about the truth.

The point is, it is both insulting and moronic to dismiss conspiracy theories by labeling those who you don’t like or disagree with by casting labels upon them.
