The problem with libertarians is that they NEVER expect to be asked specific questions about how their system works. They just expect you to accept their premise of "government bad, better without gubmint" and that's the end of the conversation. But they can't explain to you *how* society would actually function without a government.
@Ron_DeForest Жыл бұрын
Did you see the debate with the toaster libertarian? That was hilarious. His solution for no government is to have an unofficial office to keep track who owns what house or land so no one can just pop by and steal your shit. So he wants to dismantle the government agency that does that job just so that an agency can be created to do the job it’s already doing. That’s the solution all these libertarians have.
@jerryhickin9551 Жыл бұрын
@@Ron_DeForest well, yeah. They want to dismantle the current government, then institute a new government. They just won't call it government because then they'd be hypocrites.
@clairekelliest Жыл бұрын
@@Ron_DeForest they build societies in their head that only serve to service what they care about. Then they find out other people care about other things but they can’t quite believe that’s true, so they think the future, if it’s the ideal future they imagine, has to only serve their own niche needs. Then Sam poses questions. He reveals the conflicts they wanted to ignore and shows that it’s true, others don’t necessarily want what you want and that there’s no such thing as a society of one. Then they have a tendency to freak out. Because they’ve never been able to get along with others, not deep in their core being. And that has warped them to the point of melting down on youtube because someone asked how specific issues would be dealt with in their imaginary society that they proclaim is ideal. We keep watching the collapsing facades of these dudes’ psyches as they try and put up scaffolding as the mortar just keeps on crumbling. But goofy af.

It's usually goes like "ok, so how would a libertarian society prevent corporations from harming people?" to which a libertarian would respond "well we could still have laws the prevent that" you mean government regulation of the free market? @@NathanCotrill "Trap" is a bit dramatic sir. Ethan Klein runs a drama reaction channel. He's not a debater which is why he brought on a debater who shares his same feelings on current events. Well, the important thing to take away from that is that it wasn't about the numbers. He showed that it wasn't over and over and over and over. At what point would you accept that it was just an excuse he gives people to accept his baseless claims? His peers don't care about the numbers so they don't check it, so it's a safe manipulation tactic to use to get people to not question him because otherwise he can ask them about the numbers they don't have nor care about. So to prevent that from happening, they just let him preach about the technology and the future and if they find him sympathetic, they'll trust that he's 100% correct on everything and believe what he says and even base future decisions on that (false) information and deny actual data and news reports, etc. This is how shit works and has worked for thousands of years and how extreme right wing rhetoric is more normalized than integrity and critical thinking are and integrity and critical thinking are simply discouraged in public discourse and fallacious reasoning is encouraged and defended, even by people who claim to be "moderates" or "center", and not just in the US but all around the world, in all countries, without exception. People rather go with their gut than think and check things. People feel personally dismissed when their argument is. As a species we're severely mentally disabled by this shared disorder of glorified ignorance and we need a lot of therapy to overcome it, which is also discouraged and painted as weak. And 12.4% of your dad’s wages throughout his whole life are completely gone with no benefit to him while he was alive or to his family (unless your mom got some survivors benefits). I understand that people believe criticizing the structure of social security is basically political heresy but if your dad was a modest income earner, that 12.4% is a brutal tax on his income. How is it fair to say a program that taxes so much of a working persons income will keep them out of poverty when it makes it significantly more difficult to save to invest, buy a house, pay for transportation? I would honestly like to know someone’s thoughts on this. I understand the 12.4% is split between employee and employer but that’s not true if you’re self employed. Also, by attaching 6.2% to the company based on an employees wages rather than just their total profits, it just incentivizes them to lower their wages by 6.2% percent of something close to it. To me, the way social security is taxed is entirely messed up based on its original purposes and it’s gone up over 12X the original tax rate since implemented by FDR as I’m aware. If one would like to treat it as a redistribution program, that’s fine but it shouldn’t be attached to a person wages, it should be a tax on the country’s total productivity similar to UBI.

Thank you Sam. I'm 70. Social Security keeps me out of poverty even though I have a small public employee retirement pension, some savings, and an IRA. I paid into Social Security for 51 years, while watching retirees cruise around in their RV's and raise hell anytime it was threatened in any way. I didn't mind paying into it. I figured my day would eventually come. It did. And of course, Republicans now want to kill/cripple it, SCREAM about it, as they always have. My IRA, BTW, can be taxed at between 25% and 50 %, when I reach an older age, if I don't withdraw a specified amount. Taxed at 25%. Think about that. When you are older and need money the most, you could take a 25% tax hit. Or higher. Now think if that was your only savings. Let's say you had $500K or a million. 25% of that. I worked full time past my 62 age where I could begin taking Social Security. I'd say at least half of my coworkers, friends and classmates never made it to that age. Or just barely beyond it. I resisted taking Social Security but when Trump got elected, and there was a full GOP Congress, I panicked and started taking it. (I know, Trump says don't touch Social Security now. I don't trust him.) So I started taking benefits while still working. One year cost me $4000 and another almost $6000 in money I returned to Social Security. Because I made too much money - like $27 to $28K a year. I knew it was coming and just saved the money, and therefore could pay it back. Make no mistake, the system IS rigged against low income and Working Class people. They can hit me with 25% tax penalties and take X1000 dollars of my income, but God help you if you want to raise the $160,200 cap, or make corporations pay, or institute Warren's wealth tax.

So Sam asks about the facts he bases his claims on and he gets angry that he's asked to do that because he showed he doesn't want to and he never cared about the facts. So it IS all about the facts because Sam likes it when people base important decisions on facts and I think everyone should and that pretty much all of society just pretends to do it to get people off of their backs, until they meet someone who DOES have integrity and values it. Republicans have nothing but excuses and it's mostly excuses to shut other people down, not do do something constructive. So on one side you have people who care about what is demonstrably true and on the other hand you have theists and republicans and "moderates" and "centrists" who pretend to care about facts when it's convenient and then frustrate the conversation to stop people from thinking critically and showing integrity and encouraging others to do so as well. I actually believe this to be true. Technology, agi, robots, no cost energy, no cost compute, will render most Americans jobless. The problem is the in-term. We’re not prepared for the in-term period between mass joblessness and a time where people won’t have to work or be in want. We’ll have 3d printers printing our food, etc. Laid off workers will need UBI. Forty percent of U.S. jobs are in transportation. Autonomous vehicles and smart roads are coming for their jobs. We will need to change the tax structure to tax companies for every robot and every instance of ai/agi/automation. Or at least tax them commensurate with the number of workers they replaced. Once we can tax companies for replacing workers, then we can absorb mass unemployment and fund UBI.

@@CMA418 That's an easy call. I could say that about every republican voter without even hearing what they have to say. They hypocritically whine about a problem their party caused, blame someone else, refuse all solutions that aren't a complete status quo and then whine some more about the problem they caused and blame everyone else for. They shout that they want the problem solved bu they don't. Case and point: the first thing the dude in this discussion did was say it's about the math, using it as an excuse to ignore the maths and jump to his conclusion, which isn't fixing the problem, but circumventing it by arranging your own retirement, (probably knowingly and intentionally) disregarding that not everyone can do that and that it would only maintain a status quo of rich people being fine and poor people not getting out of poverty. He was asked about his motivation, which he said was the maths, and all he did in response was shout harder that he wanted to only talk about the solution. His motivation doesn't support his conclusion. He said he wasn't against keeping people out of poverty and he's lying. His solution is to ensure they stay in poverty so they won't get any power to stop him from using his solution: Letting the rich take care of themselves and everyone else just has to work harder or die. He isn't the exception. This is the rule. The exceptions are people like Sam who demands to hear a non fallacious reasoning for important decisions that impact more people than just ourselves.
