The reason why we know that IQ is a fairly good measure of general intelligence is because of its high validity in life outcomes - IQ positively correlated with school grades, job performance, not crashing your car, not smoking, and life expectancy. Not only that, but in many categories it is the best measure we have. Sure, it's imperfect, but the idea that it "doesn't measure anything other than the IQ score" is rediculous.

You are correlating high IQ with better life outcomes but that's not the cause. The cause is people who were raised in better socioeconomic situations and were able to better navigate challenges in life, due to being better educated, having better nutrition, etc. If you were born in the slums of Algeria and never went to school and spent your life making tiles out of clay, you probably wouldn't have a very high IQ. But take that same person and raise them with proper K-12 education and send them off to college and feed them proper meals, and they will score much higher. Which completely blows a hole in the idea that IQ measures anything, other than how you did on that particular test.

If you are raised in a better socioeconomic status that will probably result in a higher IQ (I believe the most recent data from twin studies show that IQ is 50% environmental, so it would make sense). However, adjusting for that does not explain all of IQ's great validity: most great life outcomes correlate more strongly with IQ than with parental socioeconomic status. This is most likely a case of "circular causation" - higher IQs cause better economic output, better economic output causes higher IQs. Either way - I wasn't commenting on what the proportion of genetic vs environmental factors causing IQ is, I was merely debunking the false claim that IQ does not measure anything. Even if IQ *were* 100% environmental, that does not mean that general intelligence does not exist or that IQ is a bad measure of it.

Physiologists believe that IQ tests measure an overall cogitative ability called 'g', and the tests do have good repeat-ability so they are measuring some permanent quality of the mind applied to them. But that quality is likely entirely based on nurture and cultural upbringing and would correspond best to abstract thinking. And this is why we see the Flynn effect in which overall IQ is rising because people are being increasingly encouraged to think abstractly. The caller also mentioned Epigenetics which is the relatively resent discovery that genes actually get 'tagged' during life and that phenotype changes occur without permanent genotype changes. This basically nullifies every twin study on IQ as what would seem like genetic influence could simply have been the parents environment being expressed in epigenetics. Some of this phenomenon could could explain group differences that remain even in a cross-racial adoption and high-quality environments not completely closing group performance gaps. Even if this is the case it will just be a few generations for these epiginetic switches to be flipped if quality environments are provided, completely contrary to the 'equality is impossible so lets not even try' policy that BellCurvers advocate.

IQ is a measurement of some very specific skills, mostly pertaining to classic scientific ideals, especially math and spatial problem solving. It is as Sam said "IQ tests measure how well you do on an IQ test". It's been promoted as a measure of intelligence but it's actually quite disputed for that task, and the high IQ scores are sometimes really just coincidental with high intelligence, since most people that are intelligent are also well educated. The test however mostly just shows that, education levels, and specific ones at that, which is exactly why many poor groups (blacks in the USA, african countries) score lower, while richer countries score higher (asia, europe). The argument that IQ tests support any race claims is absurd if you dig into more detailed population statistics, and is therefore self-defeating because it disproves racial homogeneity (meaning: all blacks/whites/asians are the same).

I agree that IQ tests are arbitrary, and there's no feasible way to accurately sort ethnic groups by intelligence. But I don't agree that the only genetic differences between ethnic groups are "visual." Instead of denying biology 101, why not just say that you're against studying these differences? I don't agree with the caller, but you are missing a key point in this is debate: IQ is the most accurate measure of cognitive function, and there is a very strong correlation between IQ and success in life. It's not simply a bunch of random question that are biased towards certain groups, it is a very powerful measure of general intelligence. And it definitely is not to say someone with a low IQ can't do well in life AT ALL. But when we are talking about population differences, the averages produce massive differences in results. I have askanazi Jewish in my blood line and we are black people with high IQs. My mom grew up in New York and hated school. She was just into sports and her teachers were convinced she wasn't going to past high school. But she end up graduating, join the army and found out her IQ was 125. My eldest brother also has a high IQ. When he was 5 years-old his kindergarten teacher try to convince my mother he was "slow" and couldn't comprehend his school work like his fellow classmates. My mom raised her kids in he south and this teacher was white with a predominantly white class. She had a history of accusing her non-white students of always being slow. My mom had my brother tested outside of the school and he score exceptionally higher than children in his age bracket. His IQ is still 130 but he lacks common sense. Me personal, I've been told I was slow by my white teachers. Yet had outside tutoring done and score higher than my classmates on reading and comprehension skills and score average on mathematics. I thank my mom for never believing the white teachers we grew up with. Some just had their on political agenda but we are not the first nor last victims of racial discrimination from an educator. I image millions of more young non-white minds are being denied equal opportunity by educator assumption that their IQ is to low.

Unless you are a proactive parent it is always in your best interest to test your children outside if the school. IQ is one of the best predictors for possible career paths. "The IQ test is contextualized." No, it really isn't. Mensa has a test on their website you can take for free that's pretty accurate, and it's literally all shapes and pattern recognition.
