Najam Sethi ji you missed some crucial facts: (i) India had already successfully tested its first nuclear bomb (code name Smiling Buddha) back in 1974 when India Gandhi was PM; and (ii) PV Narasimha Rao's Congress govt had already sanctioned the testing of nuclear bomb however Congress lost the elections and a NDA coalition govt (with BJP being the majority party) came into power. During the handover of power & office, PV Narasimha Rao himself asked Atal Behari Vajpayee to ensure that the nuclear bomb test be done.

Answer the question which never did. The answer to the question is that yes, there were sanctions on India as well. American relations with India were no different from there being sanctions in place already and therefore, India never suffered the consequences as probably as much as did Pakistan. India’s dependence on IMF also was negligible and finally the US came offering the better relations to India including offering it a membership of the nuclear fuel suppliers group. This improved further with discovering Osama bin Laden in Pakistan and now it is end of the Biden administration. So the rest is rather obvious.
