Samaki Poa | Empowering Aquaculture across East Africa

With a focus on capacity-building across the aquaculture value chain, the newly launched Samaki Poa consortium will improve food security and provide practical and applicable expertise to empower the aquaculture sector in East Africa.
Samaki Poa, meaning ‘cool’ or ‘awesome’ fish in Swahili, is an intercontinental cooperation between five stakeholders from East Africa and Europe, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad). The cooperation involves Blue Planet AS., Lake Harvest Group Pvt Ltd., Larive International B.V., Lattice Aquaculture Ltd., and Skretting/Tunga Nutrition.
These experts join hands to improve the aquaculture sector in East Africa by addressing the knowledge productivity gap in the value chain. The project will contribute to the local economy by creating employment and improving food security. Specific attention goes out to enable women and youth to participate in the capacity-building activities to seize the economic opportunities in the sector.
Collaboratively, tailor-made digital and vocational training curricula will be developed, aimed at the improvement of access to knowledge in the aquaculture sector. The e-curriculum, consisting of animated videos covering all relevant topics for tilapia and catfish farming, will be freely available on the newly launched website www.howtodoaquaculture.com.
The aim is to reach over 10,000 current and aspiring fish farmers throughout the continent. To make the content accessible even for those without internet access, five Tunga Nutrition farm supply hubs will be upgraded to allow for on-site training.
Besides digital training, there will also be on-site vocational training. Within the project, a new Aquaculture Academy will be established in Jinja, Uganda, following the success of the Aquaculture Academy in Kenya. In both countries, aquaculture specialists from the consortium will train 1200+ fish farmers on the most important dimensions of the trade.
