I just love this elder's classic southern (American) accent! Although I can pick up on Caribbean influence, it's almost like listening to an elder from Alabama or Mississippi. So amazing! I love our strength, resilience, and beauty! #SayItLoudImBlackandImProud!

This is awesome. Wish I would have found this video last year when I was in DR and my husband and I went to Samama. I'm African American husband is Dominican. He didn't know about the African Americans who immigrated to Semana. Mr. Anderson sounds just like an old black man from the south I can hear a little Spanish twist but I really hear the southern drawl.

I was looking at Mr. Anderson, and his demeanor, it was so southern like my late father who was from Mississippi, and he reminds me of him so much, remember when the great migration to place, blacks from all over the south headed north, and they brought their southern way of life with them, and I can see, they took it to Samana as well.

I was reading about former Dominican President Pedro Bartolome Benoit y Vanderhorst, born to Pedro Jose Benoit and Daisy Harrietta Vanderhorst on 2/13/1921 in Samana, Dominican Republic, his mother, Ms. Vanderhorst was from Samana, her last name Vanderhorst goes back to the Vanderhorst Plantation in South Carolina, her ancestors left there, and went to Philadelphia and borded for samana, but some of the Vanderhorst family stayed and settled in philly and the others went to the island, the last name Vanderhorst is very popular Dutch surname amongst the African American community here in philadelphia, as well as in Samana.

That us correct, also, He had Haitian ancestry through his father.
@abrahamisaacmuciusiii9192 Жыл бұрын
The paternal great-grandfather of Pedro Bartolome Benoit emigrated from Saint Domingue to the Captaincy General of Santo Domingo during the Haitian Revolution. That man was a Mulatto of French European and Afro Haitian descent. Because he was wealthy, he was a member of the Affranchi class in Saint Domingue.

When you watch other videos about the history a lot of the elders say that the younger generation speaks more Spanish than them. They say how when they came home their parents told them not to speak Spanish because they’re not Spanish, they’re African American. So they were forced to speak English in the house to their parents and grandparents, but now the younger generation speaks less English and more Spanish

Spanish is someone born in Spain, but people can identify as Spanish if they chose. Carribean people are heavily mixed but there are a few so called "pure" Spaniard that are the dominant controllers of Spanish speaking lands. I refuse to accept that all have African or Indians blood but these people are for sure my people. This man really looks good for his age, strong black man.
