A 27-year old rapper living in London, Shadia Mansour uses hip-hop to denounce the injustices suffered by Palestinians and reaffirm Palestinian symbols and heritage, as well as to define her role and that of the Diaspora in the Palestinian struggle. She is famously known for her hit: "el kuffiyeh 3arabiye" ("the Keffiyeh is Arab").

Back in high school when I was taking Spanish my absolute badass of a teacher would play us songs every Wednesday that were created by Spanish speaking artists and we’d have to listen for certain words that were in that specific unit and see if we could hear them and write them down. Anyways, one day he turned on “Somos Sur” by Ana Tijoux and Shadia Mansour and I absolutely fell in love with the song and listened to it on repeat for a while. When Shadia comes in for her verse I just about lost my mind with how much raw energy and passion she put into that performance, not to mention I had never heard anyone rap in Arabic before. To this day it still gives me goosebumps, even more so when I found the translation for the lyrics. So powerful. What an absolute badass of a person. I hope she stays strong and keeps making music because I’m here for it all🙏🙏🙏

I have to say that I love this woman. I'm Jewish, and support everything she said. While I think that both sides are equally to blame for starting the conflict in the first place, I believe that the continued occupation of the Palestinian people is just wrong. I really do wish there was a way to make both an Israel and a Palestine, but unfortunately neither side is willing to give an inch. I hope the conflict becomes resolved quickly, and our people can eventually coexist with one another. My mother (who is very Jewish) taught at an Arabic school and loved it. And all of the children loved her and were fascinated by her Jewish heritage. No one is born to hate and discriminate. It's taught. I think everyone in Israel/Palestine could learn that lesson, and maybe the new generation can liberate the Palestinian people.

Collin Helmers Yes cross dressing is frowned upon more so in Islamic countries than Western countries no doubt! Last time I checked "thobe" was women's clothing which Shadia wears in her music videos, but please let me know if men start wearing it.
