The IS 500 is the more practical car with 4 doors and a bigger trunk, but the LC is something special. I would daily drive the IS and set the LC aside for weekend cruises.

That was expected. The 400 lbs more weight on the LC with same power makes the biggest difference. From 50 km/h roll, the gear ratio best for the 8 speed is the 1st gear since 1st gear goes to 85 km/h. Not auto mode (which will select 2nd).

@@TeeWadeG that's just not how physics works. Weight is inertia, inhibits acceleration whether you're starting from nothing or starting from 50. The hellcat can't launch because it has way too much power and way too little tire (and poor launch control capabilities); all those problems are mostly mitigated from a roll.

Awesome video! I drive a ‘14 is350 Fsport and was awaiting them to put that beastly v8 back in the IS. Something I do want you to know, as there has been some misinformed information floating around, you can do burnouts in this car! Also if you want FULL control of the transmission you need to completely turn off traction control and put it into manual shifting mode. This entails putting the car in park, holding the traction control button for 5 seconds, then your good to slap that sucker into manual mode and it will rev match when you downshift. It’ll be especially satisfying with that v8!

Love the rumble of those V8's! If sound was everything, the IS500 would rule the super midsize sedan segment. Unfortunately, the M3 would destroy it in all performance tests. Same with the ATS-V. I give Lexus props for sticking to its guns and staying naturally aspirated.

i think the difference here is in the weight distribution,aerodinamics and the transmission of the cars. The Is500 maybe lighter but it is surely less weight balanced than the lc500 for having the best traction plus the aerodinamics of the lc500 make it just look like a spaceship compared to the Is500. to finish the transmission in the lc500 is newer than the 8speed in the is and surely has less friction and is faster to shift. what sums the drag race for me is that the IS500 is more of brutal beast and the lc more of sophisticated one imo

Actually the 8AT transmission speed according to Lexus in brochures at full throttle is 100 ms vs 120 ms for the 10AT. It is a modified version of the 10 speed out of the LS500.

At full-throttle according to Lexus (in the RCF brochure), the 8AT shifts at 100 ms vs 120 ms for the 10AT. However, possibly the software tuning on the IS500 is different for the same 8AT.

4:37 Curious the added weight of the LC plants it down so the tires maintain grip while the lighter IS breaks loose. Personally I like the heft of the LC. It feels substantial and the rear wheel steer gives it nimbleness. It only becomes apparent under hard breaking and turn in but 99% of the ppl don't come close to that. Hell I drive this thing like a maniac racing anything and I've felt it just a few times under those harsh conditions. Im sure you'd really feel it at the track.

The LC is a beautiful car no doubt, though for practicality and passengers (and keeping the V8 alive for a few more generations), the IS500 is a car I REALLY want to add to my garage! Definitely the engine they should have put in the Tundra, and I'd even like to see a hybrid of that and electrifying the front end just because.

Cool vid. I’ve driven and tracked and modded these cars more than anyone. The huge difference is the LC has a bespoke Aisn 10 speed that transforms that same V-8. The IS 500 has the same 8 speed from the RC F which is solid but it as good. This enables the heavier LC, even with some carbon fiber construction, to be quick or quicker in most cases and on the track. So happy the IS 500 is here, such a great car!

The AWR10L65 first appeared in the LS500. The LC500 10 speed is a slightly modified version of the LS500 10 speed. The hardware for the IS500 8 speed is the same as the RCF (minus the transmission coolers), but having driven the IS500, software tuning definitely feels different in SPORT+/MANUAL modes. In RCF, it feels much more violent with whiplash effect while the IS500 8 AT is focused on being smooth and comfortable rather than being as frantically quick as possible.

@@MikeForsythe The gear ratios are the same in RCF and IS500 from what I can see in the documents. It is something they did on the software tune level. The IS500 shifts are softer/smoother in SPORT+/MANUAL than they are in the RCF. My guess is, it is probably because they wanted to make it more comfortable to shift at full throttle on the streets (like the rest of the IS500).

I have an IS500 and LC500. The races went exactly as I expected. The IS is much lighter but the LC sounds like a beast. Sam, what was wrong with your IS500? Automotive Press' IS500 had an exhaust issue. Is that a Canadian thing?

No...the exhaust issue happened in the States too. I think the first reports of them where in the West Coast. It seemed to pop up within 100 miles or so of ownership, but a gasket replacement fixed it up. I'm sure the constant plant closings were the culprit, but no one (online) has been able to pin point which build dates were affected. I'm at 3300 miles on my IS 500 and didn't have any issues, thank goodness.

The LC500 is truly stunning. We know in 10 years, the LC500 sold today will still be ticking over when the same BMW/MB/Audi's sold today will be getting scrapped. It's very expensive as a car, and I get the appeal, but I wouldn't buy one brand new. In 2/3 years, for around $65k, I think its a better bargain. The IS500, I would pay around $55k for, so again, not a new one in the current car market where dealer markups are insane, but a used IS-500 from say 2019/2020 in one year from now, will be a very attractive option. Even some 2016/17 GS-F, which uses the same proven engine, is absolutely epic. Just good luck finding one.
