I have a '78 VW Beetle convertible with factory fuel injection. The computer and relay that sends power to all the fuel injection components is located behind the rear seat in the package area. You would think that as long as the top wasn't ripped no water would ever find its way there. Well somehow it did, even though the top is intact, and the car is stored in a carport when not being driven. Last year the car wouldn't start. After trouble shooting everything, I finally pulled the fuel injection relay, opened it up, and found the insides completely corroded. This is a special 14-pin relay. No one makes it anymore, everyone lists it as being out of stock, and I couldn't find a used one, so I just started calling every VW parts place I could Google. I eventually found a place that made a few more calls to their suppliers, and they got one. It was expensive ($300) but when I plugged it in my Bug immediately fired up, and I saved well over $300 figuring it out and fixing it myself. (There isn't an auto repair shop near me that will touch a 45-year-old VW fuel injection system anyway.)

The under the seat box. I mentioned this the last episode; those are thermal circuit breakers. They do not monitor outside air, they run the current they monitor through a heater on each one. If a motor stalls, i.e the seat jams, it is not catistoropic but can't be left stalled for too long or it will burn up. The circuit breaker will heat up after a certain time/overcurrent (low overcurrent will take longer to open) and open up. It will take a minute or two to cool enough to close again, then it tries again. If you remove the overload or jam, it functions normally again. It is a very common type of motor protection. You headlights all used to have that type of circuit breaker because you don't want to disable the headlight while on the road from a short, or have to find a reset button while driving. The bimetal strips were in those big headlight switches in the dash. Edit: I should add that jumped like they are will not hurt anything, but you lose your motor protection; I would replace them once you get the thing running.

I bought a really nice low mileage 2011 Q7 that was running fine but then broke down on me - Traced it back to a faulty Engine ECU and was able to get a used one from AUSTRAILIA for AU$330 (£165 or $210) rather than the 2 1/2 GRAND that AUDI wanted for it - another £150 for programming and hey presto - car all back & happy again. I've been eager to watch this series as I'm going through a similar problem. I bought a 2006 Bently Continental GT from auction as well, got a key made since it didn't come with one, new batteries, and its a crank no start. I've got it to start off starting fluid and it'll run for about 5 to 10 seconds and then you hear a relay click from the rear battery area in the trunk and then the car shuts off and the key won't come out. I have to remove the battery terminals for a bit then put them back on for the relay to reset then the key comes out again. Your videos have me thinking it's the Casey model as well. Thanks for the great videos!

@hydrocarbon823 күн бұрын
You just found out how to make the angry pixies happy: feed them LOTS of wood alcohol. What usually happens is there's just enough minerals to bridge pins and capacitors, so various chips can't get to full voltage, mosfets don't turn on (or off), and capacitors in voltage control circuits don't charge up. The alcohol absorbs & washes the mineral deposits away pretty well.

Just because the water didn’t rise to a specific height to get into something doesn’t mean the electrical things above the line wont be potentially water damaged. High moisture content in the car with the windows up and add in humidity and heat and evaporation or condensation can do some damage to any and all circuity just from there being moisture in the air inside the car..🤷🏻♂️

You did well, but I would make really sure you cleaned all the green goo and corrosion off that kessie board. remember it can be UNDER components not just around them. Be careful drying PC Boards with compressed air, you can kill them from static discharge coming off the air nozzle tip. Keep the nozzle tip at least 6 inches from pc board.
