Mark Jindrak portrayed something similar to Lex’s Narcissist gimmick. In the independent circuit, a guy named Paul Lee is doing a “Nature Boy” gimmick, similar to Ric Flair. (SIDE NOTE: Although this gimmick is widely hated, he’s doing a fine job at carrying the Nature Boy gimmick.) In 2015, Daniel Richards, a political leftist since 2011, debuted the “Progressive Liberal” gimmick and began billing himself as such in 2016, after Donald Trump became president, which emboldened conservative fans, and thus, he was a heel in conservative areas in the US and a face in liberal areas (like California); a concept that is awfully similar to Bret Hart’s 1997 run, when he was a heel in America and a face in his home country of Canada. Around the same time as when Daniel became the Progressive Liberal, Sam Adonis, the real-life brother of Corey Graves, pitched an idea to CMLL’s higher-ups, in which he would portray a pro-Trump character and play off Trump’s stance on Mexico and immigrants; this gimmick is still in use to this day. In other words, Sam’s character is a stark opposite of Daniel’s character.

There is nothing original about knight. He took the low road and repackaged himself as a Steve Austin, Rock hybrid which was clear the moment he debuted this character. "Well, everyone copies from someone" or "Nothing is really original." I hate these excuses. There is a big difference between someone taking inspiration from someone or something and innovating it to something all their own and someone who simply repackages an image or idea with little more than a pallete swap. What bothers me most about la knight is he already had the likable character of Eli Drake but decided to, or was pressured into assuming this new character.

To be fair, Lex Luger's Narcissist gimmick was suddenly and prematurely dropped when Vince decided that Luger would be the perfect Hulk Hogan clone. Luger was starting to get his heel gimmick over because it was kind of an extension of his own personality, but because it was dropped so quickly in favor of making him a top patriotic babyface and the fact that the Narcissist never got a true major televised big name angle, the gimmick is looked at as a failure by modern fans when it was simply a potentially successful formula for it's performer that was dropped too soon because the boss wanted a quick fix to Hogan's permanent departure.

"Copycat Characters" feels kind of disrespectful to the talent. What people don't grasp, is that Vince has been in the wrestling business for at least 50-years. On top of being the one above all, in terms of what passes, and having the ultimate "say so", in what his employees do, he also understands probably more than most - what gets over and what doesn't. It's not like today's talent are combing through personas trying to find out what fans like and want to see, they're merely told how to act, like puppets, to earn the company more money. I'm sure they have some creative freedoms, but not nearly as much as people imply that they do have. The real conversations going on behind the scenes probably sound a little more like "yeah, L.A Knight looks good on Camera, and he's fit, we could definitely push him up more, but how do we get about getting him over? Let's have him do this, and do that, (which are things heavily taken from people like The Rock and Stone Cold) because those are the safest ways to push him up". - Then you have instances where they do have control over how their "character" looks, and acts, like Jey Uso, and they willingly admit to taking looks and behaviors from others, like Bret the Hitman Hard. bottom line is - everything has been done, there's no shame in taking from those who did it before you. There's a reason they found success, and it's a formula that will yield much more success further down the road. People will look 20 years down the road at your Cody Rhodes, your Roman Reigns, your Damien Priests, L.A Knights, Kevin Owens, and they will take from them, in order to build a better character, the way people do today.
