I agree that ultimately it falls on the players. But David Stearns had an entire offseason to bring in good pitching, and build this team better. He decided to go with comeback players which could work out but ultimately seems like it hasn’t. At which point does he take the blame? Harrison Bader has been surprisingly decent at the plate but Mendoza has not taken advantage of his speed to create opportunities of stolen bases to create runs.

Love your podcast but blaming the manager is a bad take here. I was as frustrated as anybody re the loss. But I think you are right about Baty taking some games at 2nd base. Mets will have leverage in the Alonso negotiations, and next year it could be Vientos, Acuna, Lindor, and Baty across the infield, and a lot of money freed up for a frontline starter. They need to get Tidwell and Sproat some major league action in July to prep them for next year. Then they will only need one frontline starter to add, and one frontline outfielder. Re the bullpen they need to move Peterson or Butto or some other quality arm to the bullpen and put Nunez in a higher leverage position but not closer, not yet, let him earn it.

When Ottavino pitches two days in a row, his 2nd day ERA is almost 8. Why does Mendoza put him in against the Nats to close the 9th? Otto is almost 39 years old. If I never see him pitch another inning for the Mets, it will be too soon.

To blame Mendoza is unfair. I doubt we would have been much better with Buck. This roster has been ill-conceieved since the acquisition of the Leader of the Rat or Raccoon Gangs arrival, the great Francisco Lindor. This team needs a COMPLETE overhaul as far as roster construction. The difference between this era of ineptitude and the deRoulet, M.Donald Grant years is David Stearns. He and Mendoza need time to rebuild this organization from top to bottom and it will take time. There are lean years ahead, so buckle up, it will be a bumpy ride before this ballclub is ready to contend and spending our way out of the hole is NOT the way to fix this mess.

I’d be cool with just about anyone at second base over McNeil. If baty can handle playing the position then when they call him back up they should put him there. He’s hit better than mcneil which isn’t saying much and could probably play better defense than mcneil has this season.

It is very painful to watch Quintana and Manaea pitch. I keep Megill, Severino, and hopefully Senga. For relievers, I keep Diaz, Garrett, Nunez, Young, Reid-Foley, and Ottavino (just for one more year - yes, I believe he can pitch his way put of the current funk he is in). They can build the rest of the pitching staff around those guys and fill in the missing pieces. Otherwise, I think it's time to fire the pitching and hitting coaches.

This team never had the tools to be a championship-caliber team. Their 2021 roster was full of holes and the farm system was weak. They should have traded Alonso back then. They would have gotten a ton of talent in return, but Met fans were convinced he was the face of the franchise.

As a marte fan, that is completely innacurate. He is 30, and last year was his second besr ops at .843, and this year it is .822. In prior years combined, he had a single year with over an .800 ops

Seems like MLB has the book on Baty and he just isn't able to adjust to MLB pitching. He definitely needs way more time than just a couple weeks in Triple A. I would keep him down there at the bare minimum of a month and have him adjust to what was getting him out in the bigs. Otherwise he's looking like a AAAA player. I don't see what Ryan sees in Baty, hitting was supposed to be his strength. Would much rather see Jett Williams or Acuna getting looks at 2b than a 3rd baseman who can't hit

It surely looks like McNeil was a victim of the end of the shift. When teams were shifting, he could place the ball in the vacated hole over and over again. Now he is just terrible...a slap hitter with a low AVG. He needs to be benched and used as a utility man.
