‘Same promise for 25 years’: Locals as Adani’s Dharavi plan turns MVA’s rallying cry

The proposed Adani redevelopment project in Dharavi has become a contentious issue in Maharashtra’s high-decibel poll campaign. Amid the opposition’s allegations of the Adani Group being given preferential treatment under the NDA government, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has promised to scrap the Dharavi project and this is gradually turning into a rallying cry for the Maha Vikas Aghadi.
The Mahayuti government has thrown its weight behind the project, asserting that private investment is essential to transform Dharavi with improved infrastructure and housing for its residents.
But Dharavi isn’t new to such politics. Over the last two decades, its residents have seen a host of unfulfilled promises with every election. In this election, it has to choose between Rajesh Khandare from Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Jyoti Gaikwad, sister of Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad, on November 20.
What do locals feel about the redevelopment project?
“For the last 25 years, Dharavi has been listening to the same promise over and over again but everyone leaves after the election,” says a resident.
Surveys are underway but many families fear their members will be homeless or cramped in smaller rooms considering the eligibility criteria for relocation. “We will not budge, the government can do whatever they want,” says another.

Sorry, but I didn't like this reporting that much. It is completely focused on emotions of people living there and have nothing else of substance. I don't have a problem with the coverage of the 'opinions' of people, but it felt very emotional and pigeonholed into their own environment. What do I mean by that? - One of them said that 'we don't want to leave Dharavi ever'. Well, what if you can have much better quality of life (less expensive, more opportunities) somewhere else, Wouldn't you want to leave the place... This reporting gives me nothing of value because I already know about the plight of the people there. What I don't know are the details of Dharavi redevelopment plans beyond maybe 2-3 bullet points. Show me that. Show me that there's no authority in place to think about the redevelopment plan yet (if that's the case), if there's an authority/team then show me that they don't have concrete plan by grilling them on the details or by showing the lack of plan details (if that's the case). Ask the people of Dharavi about how much they know about this so called redevelopment plan. That will hit home the fact that govt.'s plans are just in the air. I clicked on the video assuming it would be on why Dharavi redevelopment plan has not been taking off for so many decades. What I got was one sided opinions (not facts) from the residents.

In Hyderabad one church property in the heart of the city was given for development. They were trying to remove the local residents. They then met the CM ysr and a new agreement was made. Technically, most of the land in Dharavi is government-owned, and the residents do not have legal titles to it. Many slum dwellers have built homes and businesses on this land without formal approval. Who gives them the right to occupy the government land at free of cost
