look at your 12th house rashi, for example it's cancer. Now lord of cancer is moon, see where moon is placed, lets say in the first house. Therefore, lord of 12th is 2 places away from 12th house (12...1 = 2 places away). Now count two places from the first House (aka, 1...2) 2nd house should have virgo in it, so Virgo is the upapada rashi.

my example, aries lagna, the lord of 12 jupiter is in aries, so I count from house 12 to my jupiter position it' gives 2, I arrive at the house where the 12th lord is, I start counting again the same two steps which in total give 4, that is, for me my UL is in house 2 taurus

This might be a better explanation... 1. Find the position of the 12th lord in the horoscope. 2. Count the number of houses from the 12th house to the 12th lord. 3. Then, count the same number of houses from the 12th lord. 4. The sign we arrive at is the place of Upapada Lagna in the birth chart.
