DESCRIPTION
Dastgah: Shur
The music for this beautiful piece originates from the Kurdish Sufi centers of Iraq. Although the original poem (‘Mosalmanan’) was written in Persian approximately 200 years ago by Shaykh Abdul Rahman Khales of the Qadiriyya-Talabani Sufi order, the lyrics of this rendition come from Jalal ad-Din Rumi’s Divan-i Shams (Ghazal 34). The Hay Allah maqam is used in the first half of this piece followed by maqam Hadaadi (both traditional rhythms found in Sufi music). This new arrangement, written specifically for the Fes Festival concert, is a solemn and penetrating version, with lyrics, chants, rhythms and melodies that build upon each other to arrive at an elevated awareness of reality and give the listener an experience of a Sufi circle of remembrance. Sami Yusuf’s latest album ‘Live at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music’ was born of his desire to translate for a global audience the rich musical language of cultures stretching from Andalusia, North Africa, and Arabia to Turkey and beyond. His desire is realised here: the music is refined, and whether meditative or ecstatic, it is all connected by remarkable emotional depth of expression. In its melodic Arabic love songs, its rhythmic chants of North African Sufi lodges, its trance-like Turkish ilahis of the whirling dervishes - this is the visionary work of a composer and performer at the top of his game. Directing an international ensemble of master instrumentalists on traditional acoustic instruments - Bağlama, santur, qanun, kemanche, ney and more - and joined by a renowned Moroccan vocal group, in this 16-track album Sami Yusuf delivers all the magic of the live performance that held his Fes audience spellbound.
2019 was Sami’s second time headlining this prestigious festival, the first time was 2009, joining the ranks of earlier headliners such as Ravi Shankar, Paco de Lucia, Youssou N’Dour, Joan Baez, Björk and Ben Harper.

There are two specific moments when human connection reaches its highest to me, when Mama finishes her prayer Assalamou Alaykum, Assalamou Alaykum, then looks straight into my eyes (while still silently saying the Adhkars) and pour through them, to my soul, all the serenity she brought from beyond the farthest sky. The second, is when I assist a real musician transcending by his art to somewhere we don't necessarily reach with him, then by the very last moments starts descending again to this common dimension of ours, that everlasting second of silence before he makes an eye contact, that pours to our souls what we may have missed by not reaching his deepest source. And when the music itself, is a journey to the divine, you feel no difference between your Mama's prayer and the performance of a stranger. And in both, you feel the connection, without contributing to it. May all souls not lack of this warmth ❤
