YES! I have two vocal teachers that I follow, and if I just want a basic reaction I watch the other one. But if I want to really hear the science behind the singing, Sam is the man. It's also one of the only subjects I studied long enough to actually understand & follow (as opposed to watching Project Runway or whatever and agreeing with the judges as if I know anything about fashion, lol). Sam is *so* well educated and likeable. It's obvious he's a very, very good teacher.

I love when you imitate what the singer is doing with their mouth while the video is playing. Sometimes it's hard to see, but then you mimic it and, for me, it helps so much at times. I'd love to hear you sing a chorus pulling chest voice vs proper technique, with a few different songs. @crosita1
@crosita1 4 жыл бұрын
It's just a very fast v sound is very close to a b sound. Both sounds are made with the lips. Both sounds are voiced (versus the unvoiced f or p alternatives). A v/f is a fricative, where the air flow is highly restricted but not halted. A b/p is a stop, where the lips stop the airflow entirely for a moment. When they go by really fast they sound similar because there isn't time to be certain if the airflow had been totally halted or just very restricted. In English we use lower lip and upper teeth for the v. In Spanish, a v is the two lips almost but not quite halting the airflow, which makes the sound even closer to a b sound. So much so that Spanish speakers often make spelling errors that replace one with the other because they can't tell the difference--in conversation at full speed they are basically the same sound.

I hear never each single time. Not even close to sounding like nebber i think.
@np1056
@np1056 4 жыл бұрын
My guess is that the phantom B sound is mostly related to the alterations he talks about in this video.. And several experts telling you there's a B sound can easily make you hear something you wouldn't have heard otherwise. We're highly suggestable, especially when we know the person is well-versed in the topic. Almost like a "you can't ever see (hear) it the same way" thing. And like it's been mentioned above, V and B are incredibly similar sounds. And you have to hit that consonant incredibly fast when singing. This is just my semi-educated guess from studying music and languages (which are super closely related, along with math.) One of the many reasons kids should study music. Kind of got off track at the end, lol. But I would be really interested to hear Sam's opinion.
@np1056

@@crosita1 Well said! Did you study linguistics? I've always wanted to be a linguist. It's so fascinating. Have you watched Wired's KZbin series Technique Critique where a linguist breaks down accents from movie & TV? It's fascinating.
@crosita1
@crosita1 4 жыл бұрын
@@np1056 OMG love that series even though I am far too self conscious to actually try accents! I took as many linguistics classes as I could jam into my Zoology degree and music minor 20 years ago lol but if I had known it was a field of study that existed before I had started my undergrad I probably would have had an extra minor. And the crossover between singing and phonetics did justify a few courses 🤣🤣. But yeah, I love linguistics too. If you haven't read "Because Internet" I highly recommend that book (author narrates on the audio version which I appreciate in a linguistics book) which is a linguistics nerd take on internet language! The fact that most people check their keyboard mashing and redo it if it doesn't look keyboard mashy enough.... it's just awesome.

Can you please do Silverchair, Emotion Sickness, live at São Paulo, 2003. Please!!! Aussie bands just don’t get enough love, and this song is a masterpiece from some extremely talented Aussie musos. They wrote their first hit, Tomorrow, at 14!! They started off very grunge, but by Emotion Sickness had integrated so much more into their music. So please cover them! I’d also be curious as to what you think of Tina Arena’s voice. Chains was her biggest hit, but Sorrento Moon is pretty good too. Edited to add: Julie Fowlis Hug air a bhonaid mhòir, because it is probably really useful in teaching how to sing difficult and fast songs (also it’s really impressive), or Tha mo ghaol air aírd a chuain (my love is on the high seas). Just a little trick/exercise for mixed voice that my singing teacher gave me, so basically what worked for me was to find a song that was mainly in my head voice (is that it in english??) but with some parts in chest voice, for me it was Carrie from Carrie the musical, and basically she just told me to start it up already in my head voice and see it really high when it goes back down, that way you're still connected with the airiness of the head voice, but with the power of chest voice, hope it helped a bit (??)

Hey Sam! Please do a review on Angelina Jordan (Astar). If you can specifically do her Bohemian Rhapsody from AGT the champions, otherwise maybe I put a spell on you? or any of your choice.

I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I found you recently and have watched a ton of your older stuff. My 13yr old son now watches your videos which is cool. :) Thank you for giving constructive criticism and analysis instead of just saying things are good and/or msking fun of people.

Doing a comparison to her now on AGt to her as a child (like her cover of I Put A Spell On You) would be amazing. She has SUCH vocals range and ability to be a vocal chameleon it would be a shame to just review one song...
