YES! I have two vocal teachers that I follow, and if I just want a basic reaction I watch the other one. But if I want to really hear the science behind the singing, Sam is the man. It's also one of the only subjects I studied long enough to actually understand & follow (as opposed to watching Project Runway or whatever and agreeing with the judges as if I know anything about fashion, lol). Sam is *so* well educated and likeable. It's obvious he's a very, very good teacher.

@crosita14 жыл бұрын
It's just a very fast v sound is very close to a b sound. Both sounds are made with the lips. Both sounds are voiced (versus the unvoiced f or p alternatives). A v/f is a fricative, where the air flow is highly restricted but not halted. A b/p is a stop, where the lips stop the airflow entirely for a moment. When they go by really fast they sound similar because there isn't time to be certain if the airflow had been totally halted or just very restricted. In English we use lower lip and upper teeth for the v. In Spanish, a v is the two lips almost but not quite halting the airflow, which makes the sound even closer to a b sound. So much so that Spanish speakers often make spelling errors that replace one with the other because they can't tell the difference--in conversation at full speed they are basically the same sound.
@UltraSuperDuperFreak4 жыл бұрын
I hear never each single time. Not even close to sounding like nebber i think.
@np10564 жыл бұрын
My guess is that the phantom B sound is mostly related to the alterations he talks about in this video.. And several experts telling you there's a B sound can easily make you hear something you wouldn't have heard otherwise. We're highly suggestable, especially when we know the person is well-versed in the topic. Almost like a "you can't ever see (hear) it the same way" thing. And like it's been mentioned above, V and B are incredibly similar sounds. And you have to hit that consonant incredibly fast when singing. This is just my semi-educated guess from studying music and languages (which are super closely related, along with math.) One of the many reasons kids should study music. Kind of got off track at the end, lol. But I would be really interested to hear Sam's opinion.
@np10564 жыл бұрын
@@crosita1 Well said! Did you study linguistics? I've always wanted to be a linguist. It's so fascinating. Have you watched Wired's KZbin series Technique Critique where a linguist breaks down accents from movie & TV? It's fascinating.
@crosita14 жыл бұрын
@@np1056 OMG love that series even though I am far too self conscious to actually try accents! I took as many linguistics classes as I could jam into my Zoology degree and music minor 20 years ago lol but if I had known it was a field of study that existed before I had started my undergrad I probably would have had an extra minor. And the crossover between singing and phonetics did justify a few courses 🤣🤣. But yeah, I love linguistics too. If you haven't read "Because Internet" I highly recommend that book (author narrates on the audio version which I appreciate in a linguistics book) which is a linguistics nerd take on internet language! The fact that most people check their keyboard mashing and redo it if it doesn't look keyboard mashy enough.... it's just awesome.

Such a great example of technical criticism meant to empower and instruct the audience. I’m really of fan of this style of teaching - full truth with kindness and appreciation. Nice to see passion without dogma too!
