"Stop judging yourself as much as you are. Every individual pitch isn't important. What's important is the entire song." Sam, thank you for this. I'm a magician and motivational speaker, and in a few days I'm going to be referring to you at a 7th grade leadership conference in reference to this sentiment. It's not just true of singers. It's true of magicians, and writers, and artists, and just humans. Every moment doesn't have to be perfect. What's important is your life's totality: who you are, what you stand for, and the people impacted. Would love to get you on my podcast someday.

I'm glad you made that little teaching moment on not focusing on the notes/pitches you miss. I'm not a vocalist, I have a disorder that affects speech and swallowing (in turn, makes my singing horrible haha) but I am a cellist!! Everyone can be so fixated on hitting a note correctly when doing competition that they forget that part of being a musician is not the amount of errors you make, but how well you adjust to those errors. Flexibility with notes and pushing and pulling the dynamics/vibrato/technique to accommodate the notes that weren't perfect can actually get you a higher score on your piece because it allows the judges to critique your musical intuition whereas a perfectly played by-the-book piece wont allow the judges to see what you're really capable of engineering in order for you to make it your own. (Holy run on sentence!) You're an amazing musician Sam and I enjoy watching your videos! I've learned so much even as a non vocalist that i have an even deeper appreciation for musicians.

Andi, I too have issues with voice, as i have had thyroid cancer. I love singing, but some days my gosh, it just hurts too much to do it :( I try not to let it stop me though. I dont know if I can sing or not, the dog doesnt run away and my husband doesnt tell me to shut up so thats a bonus right? ! I would love to be able to play an instument. I totally agree with your comment here. Btw, dont ever stop playing or singing. Its good for the soul x

@@LoriFahy awww I'm so sorry to hear that! But you've beat cancer! That's amazing! I just have a nerve disorder that makes it hard to coordinate speech muscles. So I slur sometimes or cant find my words. BUT playing cello definitely helps since it's the string instrument closest to a vocal tambor ;)
@emilywaddington4696 жыл бұрын
Andi c Just out of curiosity (and if this is too personal please don’t feel like you have to answer, I am not trying to invade your privacy), but what disorder were you diagnosed with? I’m a speech pathology grad student and I’m super curious. Myasthenia gravis possibly?
@andiceni246 жыл бұрын
@@emilywaddington469 oh no problem!! I actually have something called Chiari Malformation (Type 1). My cerebellar tonsils herniated out of the bottom of my skull and crushed my spinal chord (lamens terms). I've opted out of ST for about 4 years now, but I tend to do self care because nurses are the worst patients 🤣. I just avoid foods that tend to get caught like rice, peanuts, legumes. One of my coworkers taught me some good head tilt swallowing exercises that help too. But another part of the disorder is having difficulty interpreting your own volume and tone of speech, so singing is not exactly my FORTE.
@andiceni246 жыл бұрын
Sorry let me clarify for non-medical people. It's not a problem with the tonsils in my throat at all. It's a problem with the back most, lowest part of the brain (cerebellum) your cerebellum has it's own tonsils lol.

It's probably easier recording when you don't have to cancel out those tiny echoes thrown back by reverberant surfaces, I guess. These sure do far more stylish than those classic helmholtz - resonators that could also be used as absorbers 😊

I learn so much every time I watch. It's interesting to see you acknowledge the bridge too, or "break" as I was taught it was called. I've got one song I sing that sits directly in my break, except for a few swings from head to chest, and is the hardest darn song to sing, even though it doesn't sound like it should be hard at all because there's so little movement. I think a lot of it does have to do with the vowel placements and after this I'm going to be working on making it easier.

I absolutely love to sing, it's my greatest passion, but I beat myself up for so long for each little time that I didn't grab a note just right. I just learned in the last 5 years or so to stop dwelling on it and allow myself to hear my voice... every piece of it. I love the moments you just bask in it. Love it! Also. I’m my own worst enemy, definitely a perfectionist. I’ve been told by people that I’m pretty accurate, overall. But I get so preoccupied with being BETTER. Doing the best of someone better than me. So it’s good to “get permission,” because even after twelve years it’s a struggle! Lately I’ve gotten more okay with allowing myself time to get used to a song and playing around with it, deciding to focus on dynamics or some tricky timing issues or bridging issues I have, and not worrying as much about pitch. I still think, “Oh I was so off, wow,” but I remind myself it’s okay and go back to work. You’re right, if you’re too critical at some point you’ll stop doing it, because you won’t love it anymore. And that is so sad. So much sadder than being that person who sings all the time in public that is horrible at staying on pitch, lol. I try to treat myself half as generously as I treat everyone else, and that generally helps quite a bit. Also I’m so happy you chose this clip; I’ve been wanting feedback on it specifically! Woot! Victory!!

You just made my day, for two reasons. One, I’d never heard her sing this and it’s glorious. Two, you give praise at technique. I’m so sick of this KZbin vocal coach thing. You seem real and actually encourage people.

Chandelier is one of the most difficult songs I have ever heard. It's hard enough singing it in a band let alone while accompanying oneself on guitar. Sara regularly writes and sings extremely demanding material while rarely having any problems with pitch. She is a true phenomenon.

Thank you for bringing up the thought of finding ways to get into good singing position and pitch clarity. I see so many teachers and their students obsess over perfectly centered pitch and textbook technique that it robs their performances. Especially late teen-mid twenties male singers, who are taught to work only in the technical confines of proper technique even though they won't have the same voice or be able to produce the same sounds day to day. Learning how to make life easier for yourself and use all facets of your instrument is so important.

This was an awesome vid Sam. Really enjoyed the cover and your breakdown was on point as always but most importantly you get that the whole point of singing (or any artistic expression) is to say something and the imperfections are a part of that.

Positively love you, Sam! Great video reviewing a great artist! I've been intrigued by Makenzie Thomas from this season on The Voice and would love to see you review one of her videos! Appreciate very much what you do!
