June 11, 2024. I was 16 in 1973 and my boyfriend picked me up for our first date in a Chevy Van. We didn't get married but remained good friends throughout our lives. He passed away a year ago... I miss you, David.

Remember this song at highschool. Thought Sammy Johns was great! And the song very sexy. The 70's free spirit never did me any harm. Learned a lot......

Damn right it's a masterpiece. Right into the pocket of us 70's kids right? Yeah, of course it's nostalgia, and sentimental. But objectively speaking that rythmn guitar intro that makes the tone of the song is just flat out fucking beautiful. .....The decades passed, the cynical, jaded, judgemental creeps on the story. Hitchhiking girl with bare feet getting into a windowless van? And yeah they end up having sex. WTF? ...I don't care, cause I lived it, and I remember how innocent and spontaneous we all were. Something tells me that the story of "Chevy Van" really happened. I hope it's true, cause that's how I wanna remember the 70's.

RIGHT ON, MAN! One of the 1970s BIGGEST GIGANTIC MPs.Chevy Van is an exstremely lovable love song - And one of the most loving at that.❤

According to the pictures in the Sammy Johns entry on Discogs this is the LP mix. Running time on label is 3.52. Too bad Spotify carries only the single edit. Thanks for posting this, all the keyboard/bass/guitar interactions in the outro are outstanding. And of course, this is one of the best folk-pop songs ever released.

This is great. Thanks for sharing, I had never heard the extended version. I like the extra solo. I always thought it was funny this got used in the movie The Van when the main van was a Dodge :) Sammy Johns the vanner's songwriter. Hew wrote this and Common Man a hit for John Conlee.

The song was originally released in 1973 by GRC Records, then re-released in January 1975. The song would eventually peak at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, later that year. The 7" single version was 2:54 while the epynomous debut LP version was 3:52 long. Information is right here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevy_Van_(song)

I love this song, don't get me wrong. It takes me right back to 1975 and lots of great memories. But I wonder if a sequel to this song could be about how he got an STD from the barefoot tramp he picked up in his Chevy Van!
