Skopje, North Macedonia | A day trip to Matka Canyon and Free City Walking Tour
Skopje has to be one of the most unique and unusual cities we have ever visited!
On our first day in Skopje we took advantage of the FREE city walking tour. We think taking a walking tour is essential when first arriving in a new city. There is always so much to learn and you are immediately connected with a local who can usually give you some good advice for enjoying your trip. While we enjoyed learning about the rich history of Macedonia, we were a tad more excited to head out of the city and back into nature! If you're in Skopje, you cannot miss a trip to Matka Canyon. This peaceful paradise is only a short 30 minutes bus ride outside of the city. The canyon offers many activities such as hiking trails, kayaking, and a boat ride to Europe's deepest underwater cave, Vrelo Cave. After a quick brunch at one of the restaurants on site, we opted for the serene boat ride and a tour of the cave for just $8 a person. This was definitely a highlight of our time in Macedonia!

Please refer to the country as Republic of North Macedonia. It's illegal to call it Macedonia! Just because one/two extreme nationalist politicians say things like GrEeKs ArE hIsToRy ThIeVeS, AlExAnDeR tHe GrEaT iS oNe Of Us, NoT gReEk doesn't mean that all 2M people believe the same. And the name comes from the region they live in. They live in the part of Macedonia that happens to not belong in Greece anymore. They live in Macedonia even though they have nothing to do with ancient Macedonian historical figures-those are greek North Macedonias: stop pissing them off in the comments. The country is called North Macedonia whether it should be that way or not and don't make a big deal in the comment section. And the North is a good way of separating slav Macedonia and greek Macedonia. Firstly it was all Greek, now the region you live in happens to not belong in my country anymore. I hope in the future we'll find a name everyone will be satisfied with but for now just leave people enjoy their trip

Lol they’re practically culture appropriating everything Albanian and calling them Macedonian 😂😂😂 1) mother Theresa is Albanian from Shkup (Skopje), 2) the architect of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul was an Albanian from Shkup 3) the fortress seen in the video dates from Illyrian times (ancestors of Albanians) and is from 2nd century bce,before the invasion of the Slavs in 7th century.The castle was rebuilt by the ottomans later on but the foundation dates since antiquity. Ps: Shkup was the biggest Albanian city until 1910 when the great powers decided to give it to Serbs later Yugoslavia.
