I've had a lot of tea with Somalis (very similar to Indian chai masala, but without milk), but hadn't seen anyone serving or making coffee. I found out about adding similar spices to coffee by seeing ziplock bags of "Somali Coffee" in a Middle Eastern grocery store. I'm always putting together various proportions of similar spices to add to tea, so seeing the coffee bags inspired me to try doing the same thing myself. I've also been experimenting with adding Mexican/Hispanic sweet chocolate pieces to coffee instead of their usual purpose of making hot chocolate. OK, so from this video I got that there's cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger in Somali coffee. Indian chai often will also have cloves, fennel, and black pepper. There's also a version with just some ginger (and milk) added to the tea, which someone told me is common in Gujarat. And I will sometimes add star anise or nutmeg. The mystery drink for me is Thai tea. I have not been able to duplicate that flavor, so I still buy the packaged stuff from Asian grocery stores, despite my reluctance to ingest artificial food coloring. It looks like tea leaves, but the smell is unique. The secret is not in the sweetened condensed milk. There's probably star anise in it, but that's not enough to give it that unique flavor.

Interesting facts since so much of some of Land of Ethiopia actually belongs to Somali people and it was a stolen land thus coffee grows in Somalia it's just not called Somalia anymore unfortunately.

In the Northern Somalia (Waqooyi Galbeed) We say "Xanshar". If where talking about the same thing, we usually say in the north that the word "qahwe" and "Xanshar" are the same. One thing you forgot to say is that "Xanshar" does not only have spices but It actually isn't the coffe bean but the utter skin of the coffe.
