I've been up to 65mph on a 5 mile hill. It was absolutely terrifying. [1] At the speeds you are going, it's your tires and flappy cloths that are slowing you down. Smooth tires make a huge difference at higher speeds. [1] It was SO bad because this was in the late 90s and we didn't have disc brakes. I was on a home-made city-bike (They didn't sell bikes in this style yet). It was a light weight XC frame with 700c rims laced to MTB hubs to fit the dropouts. And straight bars since they didn't make lightweight risers yet. And v-brakes with sketchy spacers so they reached far enough in to get to the rim. Not that I was willing to use brakes while going that fast.
@joshuarayne9144 Жыл бұрын
One tap on the front brake and it's game over then you wake up in the hospital. 65 is hauling ass. I had my back axle fail coming off the hill I lived on one day at 45 and it was all I could do to keep control. But it happened so fast I didn't even get a chance to react. This road wasn't nice smooth asphalt or cement either it was straight chip sealed gravel. I must have flat tracked that thing sideways for 300 feet with my up hill foot planted on the road and the other one pushing on the pedal. I almost killed a few people that day.

He also did 3 runs at top speed without any maintenance check on the bike between runs; before he did a 4th - would he have bothered checking out how much wear on ... say the brakes which might have exceeded usage specs after the consecutive runs. And he didn't really have too much safety gear on - there's a reason why motorcycle riders wear Leather and even reinforced clothing instead of a t-shirt and shorts.

About 30 years ago I hit 63mph (101kph) on a downhill about this steep but longer. It was an then new-ish Trek 930 mountain bike that I was able to sprint to 35mph (56kph) on flat ground. I sprinted all out leading up to the hill and kept pedaling till I was overrunning the pedals - the bike was going faster than I could pedal. Then I tucked in and by the bottom hit 63mph. I also had more of a runout area so I wasn't worried about stopping. I was in the shoulder of a road with a posted speed of 45mph (72kph) and was passing cars as I was going down - it was crazy. The gearing on that bike helped because I was able to hit the first part of the hill going so fast. I was rooting for you to hit 60 and if you round up you did!

Hitting 60 on a bike it totally doable, even for someone as lacking in talent as me. But to make it easy you need an aggressively geared road bike and a gentle but long and straight slope so that the speed builds in a controlled manner, you can see obstacles, and braking doesn’t present a challenge.
