Sampling Comes to the 3rd Wave

With OS 1.8, the 3rd Wave features 35 seconds of sampling at full bandwidth, 48KHz fidelity, as well as reduced sample rates from the PPG and other samplers. Record your own samples using the built-in audio input, or bring in .wav files over USB.
You can drop the bit depth from 16 to 12 or 8-bit. You can also spread up to 8 mono multi-samples across the keyboard for each 3rd Wave preset. Since there are 4 parts available at any time, as many as 8 x 4 multi-samples are possible.
In the video demo shown here, the first sound example has 8 different samples. You can loop samples with either equal gain or equal power crossfades and with a editable crossfade length for each sample. Each multi-sample can be tuned independently.
Any or all of the oscillators can be samples in addition to our other three oscillator types. This enhancement is provided as a free update and enhances the already hugely powerful sound engine of the 3rd Wave.

Amazing update! Thank you! We now have something that resembles a complete PPG system with Waveterm + more. Finally a modern synth/sampler that can play low/hifi samples through real analog filters. Just what I was hoping for.

Getting the last pieces of it done now. We are also trying to get a tutorial video done so everyone knows how to use it. But it is easy - same thing you already know on the 3rd Wave, just a new oscillator type with the letter S to signify you are playing a sample. Should be out late this week or by next weekend. Didn't think we would be able to add this given everything the 3rd already does, but now the 3rd Wave goes even further! And it doesn't eat any of the existing wavetable or patch memory.

So does this mean that the sample is an additional oscillator? And that we can have 3 samples and 3 oscillators playing at the same time on one part?

You still have 3 oscillators per voice but can now choose the source for each from wavetable(s), VA or sample.

That's about 3.4mb of uncompressed audio before the metadata (tiny). I wonder where they're putting it? Does it encroach on the existing patch storage pool?

@@mamakuproject they haven’t ever released details about the total size of the onboard flash storage, but in terms of what’s available for samples in this release … 35 seconds @ 48k 16 bit mono is around 3.5 MB. 24 bit would be around 5 MB.

@@mamakuproject 35 seconds, or 3.4MB. Not each sample, that's TOTAL that the machine will afford you. As you know this isn't a sampler - it's a synth which they notched out the capability to do some minor sampling - and frankly 35s is an eternity for a non-sampler. If you're like me, you're going for the grungy 8/12 bit style which is where the character is, so you can more than double that time figure. If I wanted crystal clear 16-bit samples I'd load up Kontact and MIDI map what I was playing on the 3rd Wave. Keep in mind the iconic Akai S1000 had much less than this out of the box. I won't bring up the paltry RAM on the Ensonic Mirage, EPS, EPS16, Emulator I/II, Emax, Emax II. And since the Groove will be USB'd to your computer, you can swap that sample data out per project. This is a great add by Groove.

It can't be everything; maybe just get a sampler? The 3rd Wave was originally designed as a next evolution of the PPG Wave 2.2/2.3, and as explained the WaveTerm had all of 3.5 seconds of sampling...

Well in 2024 ram costs nothing so I'm not sure what the point of this addition is. Like you say I have a sampler, and putting it through these filters is not amazing or even worth the time. But being able to multi sample along with the synthetic would bring value to me.
