In Finnish folklore, the Sampo was a magic mill that could produce endless quantities of grain, salt and gold. The horse was just part of the story, forged by the immortal blacksmith Ilmarinen so that the hero, Leminkainen, could use it to plough the serpent-infested field of the witch Louhi, this being one of the quests she had set for him.
