Yeah probably the most lethal one handed backhands we ever saw. He was so precise with it and while for many player that cross court backhand shot from a defensive hustle is a tough shot, it looked like Stich loved these moments to completely unravel his opponent with shots like that. He could play every crazy angle with that backhand.

exactly, one of the reasons you dont see much serve and volley anymore is because players became so dam good in passing shots. also back in the 90s everyone basically hated serve and volley. that is dull and booring. we just saw highlights of 4 sets. but whatch liek 3 matches in a row. serve - ace, serve winner, serve volley winner,..serve... oh tiebreak as usual.... then the occasional break. you break you win the set.

Stich was one of my favorites to watch during that time. Korda was another one. Both tremendously talented and could hit amazing shots with power or finesse. That both both were a bit ungainly in appearance made it more intriguing to see what great and talented athletes there were. Both had big wins over Sampras who I still consider the greatest fast court player of all time-Stich in this final and Korda took Sampras out of the USO in ‘98. Kraijeck was another talented big man who took Sampras out at Wimbledon and went on to win the title. When these guys were on they were incredible from all parts of the court. The all-court tennis shown here is so much more interesting to me than anything I’ve seen in years.

The bIggest testament to Stich’s talent and ability came from Pete Sampras in his biography a champions mind. Sampras said the player he feared the most in the draw actually wasnt Agassi, but Stich. Pete even used the phrase “dodged a bullet” when Stich retired earlier than expected. No his peak wasnt as long as many others and would come and go, but when on his A game, nobody in the world was better than Stich. He could hit any shot from anywhere on the court.

Interestingly Stitch had a winning record against Edberg, Courier and Sampras, but never managed to beat Agassi once. Just goes to show how your game can be well suited against some, but not against others... And despite these winning records his overall tournament results and rankings were very mixed. He only managed to end up in the top 10 for 3 separate years of his career. Even then, his best year end rank (2nd in 1993) came arguably in one of his weaker years in terms of slams. Definitely a bit of enigma as a player for sure
@Atombender4 жыл бұрын

Great points, oddly enough he has a losing record against boris (4-8) considering what boris said about his game "....If I had half of his talent, I would have doubled my slams". 😳😲. That is high praise and a shock to me. But not surprising, stich has won titles on all surfaces indoors and outdoors and reached slam finals like Edberg on clay, grass and hard. Imo, his movement was superb for such a big man and a smooth flowing backhand plus brilliant touch. The forehand was iffy but he improved it enough to make a run to the FO final. But he played really well against pete and imo a better clay courter than him. Nick bollitieri said that pete, boris and stich were a unique group of all court players and power baseliners who could outrally anyone from the back on a good day.
@seanwilliams15383 жыл бұрын
Interestingly, Sampras said Stich was dangerous opponent. He had a simple and compact game,and if it clicked he was too hot to handle. Great service action, and a brilliant off backhand. His semi in the US open in which he lost to in the final against Agassi, was amazing. Total destroyed Karol Novak in straight sets. German tennis was strong back then with Becker, Stich and Karl Uwe Steeb.

Great Win for Micheal Stich in addition to the 1991 Wimbledon victory. Stich had inconsistent ground strokes and made lot of unforced errors. The only man Sampras legit feared on a tennis court if I recall in his autobiography. Stich while a relative underachiever compared to some of his peers was a ridiculously talented and gifted athlete. His "god mode" was probably as good as anybody' in modern history (and yes I will argue that includes Fed, Nadal and Djoker) and could produce tennis that made him virtually unplayable at times when he would get rolling. Only problem was he was such an enigmatic talent and definitely didn't commit the way his more accomplished peers did. @ 4LVFans. Although Clijsters is a Hall of Famer, she indisputably underachieved in her tennis career. Although she won 4 major singles titles (3 U.S. Open singles titles and 1 Australian Open singles title) she should have won many more major singles titles. She lacked one of the two most important elements needed by a player to be a great champion--mental toughness. Clijsters had the physical talent but all too often she demonstrated a lack of the desire to dominate the women's tennis tour. For example, she choked away a sure win against Serena Williams at 5-1 in the 3rd set of their 2003 Australian Open semifinal. Clijsters had no business losing that match. As the famous variation of the old expression goes, in that match she "snatched defeat from the jaws of victory". She also played badly towards the end of the 3rd set of the 2004 Australian Open final against Henin, although in fairness to Clijsters, she got royally screwed by the baseline judge (on Henin's side of the court) who called one of Clijsters' shots out late in that 3rd set when the ball clearly hit the baseline. Obviously Henin deserved to win that match because she played better than Clijsters "in the clutch" in the third set of that match. Clijsters played very poorly in the 2004 U.S. Open final against Henin losing that match in straight sets.

Nowadays, racquets have bigger heads and bigger sweet spots. The string technology from today also allow more power and spin. So, they played with completelly diferent materials.
