EPISODE 104
In this episode we finally get back to work on Tally Ho! ….Leo and Pete fair the deck structure with power-planes, Rowan and Patrick pay the bottom-seams, and Pancho destroys anything she can lay her beak on.
Meanwhile we meet some neighbouring craftspeople, watch some boats get launched, and discover the advantages of a concrete floor… (dolly-skating!)

I'm a 74 year old woodworker. I make custom furniture in my small wood shop in my garage. You'd think that a 74 year old woodworker would know just about everything. Wrong, I actually learn lots of tricks and methods from you guys. Not only do I learn from you, but you're an inspiration to me. Your work ethic and dedication to your dream is nothing short of wonderful. Thank you all for all you do. Maybe some day I can make a piece of furniture for your boat.

It always amazes me how different sectors of one trade don’t seem to share techniques and knowledge as much as you’d expect. Maybe it comes down to not needing anymore knowledge to do a job or something similar. Also it’s interesting how technology we use every day and think we know the origin of is actually not what we think. The only one I can think of right now is that dyson vacuum cleaners use a filtration method from the mining industry. All to do with spinning the debris to the outside of a vessel while the air escapes through the middle.

I know that bird, Pancho, is just gunning for a boat-ride. Proly not an around the world 6 month type of thing, but at least to get out on the water for a few hours and breathe that fresh salty air. It is becoming ever clearer that having such special type of bird on sailing ships of past, would have been a wonderful asset. Your video's give people much more than just the boat building adventure. You've really been successful at letting us into your world and community, something some filmmakers never achieve. The ability to put the viewer in a bubble right there beside you is not to be underestimated. I've been following since you started (with a little binge watch to get caught up in the beginning) and you seem to do it almost every time. Maybe you should make a plan to lace your videos together into a bigger thing once you're done playing with Pancho and shoving brown sludge in cracks LOL. When Tally Ho sails again, you might want to think about it. You're better than a lot of movies to watch, and most of what's on TV. You've really "shared" your dream and adventure. Thanks for sharing.

Interestingly, in the first hour it had fifty thousand views, several hours later 130 thousand` sweet man! It was awesome to see Pancho! And man, that's brave letting her gnaw on your hands considering they can about shorten a finger. That is a real bond man, she loves you Leo! It is bittersweet adjusting to a new home, but the resources, expertise and support people in the same community location has got to be a comforting feeling. Above all, not having to put up with the stress and aggravation of someone trying to kill your dreams has to be an enormous relief.

Hey Leo (and everybody else)! In your next video, can you talk about the impact you’ve had on the wooden boat building/rebuilding industry? Maybe industry is a strong word. However, it’s very easy to see the impact you’ve had. If you don’t believe me, then just look at all of the other boat building KZbin channels that have popped up. We can all tell you’re a very humble and thoughtful person. So I’m sure you will downplay, or even deny, your impact, but you definitely have impacted it in multiple ways. In fact, I’m an example of one of the impacts you’ve had. I was born, raised, and still live on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. However, I’ve never been sailing, and never had any interest in sailing or wooden boats until I found you. So bringing new people into sailing is one example. Another would be all of the other builders that started posting KZbin videos. Now that the preamble is done (yes, that was just the preamble, you can stop reading now 😂), what do you think about this increase in interest? Also, maybe you could give a few tips to people like myself who would like to get into sailing. What do you think of the other KZbin channels, and are there any that you are a fan of/would recommend? Also, maybe ask some of the people who work for you how they feel about the increase in popularity as well. Anyway, thanks for the vid, but most importantly, thank you for showing us that there are still good people in this crazy world! Wow, that was much longer then I planned. Sorry for that, but you’re sooo busy I’m sure you won’t see this anyway 😂.

I can't explain it well but seeing you all make such steady, consistent progress on this boat every 2-3 weeks is just so therapeutic for me. It's not fast. It's not easy. But every week it gets just a little bit closer. Every week something that needed to get done gets done. And as you get lost in the process day over day it just keeps getting that little bit closer and little bit better. Life doesn't always feel that way. But when it does, it's really something special.

Pete has become very comfortable with the camera and his explanations are excellent. I hope he has other opportunities to use video to describe his work as a shipwright. It was fun seeming him on the Western Flyer project before he came over to Tally Ho and I loved the tour he did of his shop before he moved it. Having Tally Ho at a working marina where many ships are being serviced is great. I love the added content and meeting other workers. Thanks Leo. I'm sorry there was so much angst along the way but this seems a fine solution that will serve the project in the long run.

The proportion that the cost of labor made up of the total cost of a product was FAR lower back then. You can see this even today in places with low labor costs. Go look at a shop where they rebuild trucks in Pakistan. There are several very interesting You Tube channels by them. They'll have a whole legion of people working on a project, including kids that look about 10 or 12 years old using simple hand tools, where in the US it would be one guy with a shop full of multi-thousand dollar machine tools doing the same thing. It also allows the Pakistani shops to do repairs that in the US would be uneconomical because of the amount of labor. Stuff like fabricating a new frame rail for a 10 ton dump truck out of raw stock, cutting out the broken rail and welding and riveting in the new rail. In the US, the truck would be scrapped.

This channel was brought to my attention, after watching a woodworker make a small boat in 5 days and KZbin then recommended a video in this series! I thought it might be interesting to watch, but thought I’d like to see the start at least first. This then started a 4 day binge of watching the four years worth of Stella work that’s gone into the Tally Ho. I love all the great personalities that have gravitated to Tally Ho and in particular Leo. Leo has engendered such a fantastic community of people and craftsmanship around him. Love that pancho is still around and I think her owners are such amazing people to have opened up their homestead and hearts to Leo and in the process help him get this whole project of the ground! What loving and caring people they are and I’m glad while the Tally Ho was there it was also bringing them much joy as well. Only sad thing now is I currently have no more videos to watch in this series, but at least I can now join in with watching this in real time so to speak! Love seeing the boat yard. It would be great to get to meet more of the people and ships that share the yard. I can imagine there are many great stories to tell there

Greetings from France! I've watched the 107 videos in a week after KZbin highlighted Ep100 (basically only doing this haha) and boy it has been a journey! I've arrived at a time in my life where I'm not happy where I am... I've always been interested in doing things with my hands, and I've watched a lot of wood working videos, and your videos made me want to actually jump in feet first in making a living out of this, even though I have absolutely zero experience and I have no idea how to make the jump haha! Anyway, I can't wait to spend the next "two years" continuing watching the progress and the adventures of the Tally Ho! Bonne continuation et vivement la prochaine vidéo !

So good to see work progress in the new shop. Plus Pancho is there! I never gave much thought to birds other than they are fun to watch and pretty, now I understand a key element, they develop a personality! They also seem to like being around these humans building this boat!

I am thankful and relieved to see chief mate Pancho's still on the job. She'll keep the crew fare and on course. Well done on your move, Leo and Team. By the time Tally Ho sails away, Port Townsend will be a tourist destination. Peace&Love!

If Pancho was Leo's it would be pretencious AF. That she belongs to his adopted family just increases the beauty of the love story.

Looks like you are settling into the new workshop just fine ! It was a bit of a shock when you announced that you would have to move but the way things turned out it couldn't be better ! The timing was perfect too now that the hull is mostly finished and you are moving on to the interior and deck etc ! It's also great to see Pancho enjoying your company again she's a really beautiful and intelligent creature ! I noticed in a few videos she tries to mimic some of the actions she sees you doing like pushing a tool along a plank or chipping away at some wood, when she tries to mimic you she uses her beak in the absence of hands. In the video intro when you were holding her she seemed to be trying to make your hand work like she has seen it many times before with repetitive motions ! Those beaks are incredibly powerful and sharp, they could nip off a finger very quickly if she wasn't careful but she shows you a lot of respect !
