He is a true vocalist, not a pop star, and I mean that as a true compliment. He sounds similar live or recorded because he isn't relying on mixing and auto-tune. to clarify, he never goes into falsetto in this song. The high parts you hear are all in his head voice ( which is different than falsetto). In head voice with proper technique ( which it sounds like he is using) a talented vocalist can belt with no damage to his voice. Damage is only caused if you aren't using proper technique.

He's good but def over hyped ...he's clearly a early Stevie wonder/Jackie Wilson student but has that modern john legend edge for those who like that style.... This is legit raw talent. No auto-tune, no background track. Just him, his voice, and the beautiful melodic instruments playing. He is a damned masterpiece on legs. For God's sake, there hasn't been a single song i've hated from him. What the hell. He's so amazing, it literally brought tears to my eyes. He doesn't even try and he's still so amazingly soulful. So passionate, so spontaneous, so refreshing. The words to describe how amazing Sam Smith is, is infinite. I hope he stays in the music industry for a long time. I agree with most of your assessment. I will, however, disagree with you saying he sings without trying. He has so much talent that the effort does not show. That ease is because he knows his ranges for chest, head, and falsetto as well as phenomenal breath control. He makes it look easy, but try to sing it. I'm a pretty accomplished musician and this song is definitely not as easy as it sounds.

I understand your point, and in that case I can see why you might find it a bit sad, however you gotta remind yourself that it's a choice that person has made for him-/herself and our opinion about it shouldn't be relevant. I myself have recorded a couple of concerts, but I did it because my girlfriend really wanted to be at them, but couldn't, so I recorded some of it, so she could get a glimpse of it. I wholeheartedly agree though, that the best experience is without the phone, but we can't pretend to know the reasons as to why people decide to record.

He is one of the few artists nowadays who actually deserve to be famous for singing! Most are extremely horrible live, and that shows their true voice! They only sound good through auto tune. There are a billion people full of talent that should be famous over them. Sam Smith isnt one of them. He is amazing live! This almost sounds better than the original! I love his voice, and its like he isnt even teying to make this happen! Hes just singing! Its amazing
