@@RodrigoMAOEE That would be the S.M.A.R.T. data I assume. If you are running Windows 10 you should be able to see the health status on your drive in Settings > System > Storage and then choose Manage Disks and Volumes ...then click Properties on the disk... I guess it's somewhat the same in Windows 11. There's also free utility software like CrystalDiskInfo that will read and display such information

Agreed. It would have been nice to see some figures for standby power consumption though. I've notice that my laptop battery life took a hit with the 990 pro, might be due to the dram cache and perf drawing more idle power.

It's also amazing how back in 2014 I was buying SATA SSDs with 128gb for around $91 and that was a budget drive at the time, and that $91 meant a whole lot more in the grocery store in comparison as well. $91 was not money you would throw around

faster? - yes, defo. more capacity? no, in 5 years of time ssd's had 0 innovation towards capacity, were stuck on same 8TB at ridiculous pricing of 1000+usd for sabrent one. Another point is motherboard manufacturers removing sata ports which cost pennies to put on, with each new generation but, not really adding much nvme slots so, if you are prosumer instead of hooking up 8 - 20-24tb hard drives like you could with 2020 motherboards, now you can only hookup 4 sata drives and if you go nvme route capacity wise you can only do 4 nvme ssd's of 8tb which will cost more than 160+tb of hard drives with ssd caching... and that's on high end motherboards, what then budged ones have? were losing functions in favor of nvme which 8tb models are 1100usd a pop...

What's crazy is that they're not faster. Random speeds of the top gen 5 drives are barely faster than gen 3 drives. What's crazy is that Optane drives from 5+ years ago are not only still faster than even gen 5 drives to this day, but completely obliterate gen 5 drives.

The one thing I noticed from modding and playing games is the need for memory storage. Currently I'm looking for a 4TB SSD as I will quite easily fill up a 2TB just modding a single game. I'd love to see how these units compare when it comes to this kind of use where the storage may be on the second M.2 connector or even running through a cable connection. I've seen very few test this and those that did had varying results. Aside from that little wish though, another nice, concise, informative vid. Good choice of testing and tables with historical info for context.

Thanks for the great review. Regarding HMB testing, would you consider testing in a USB 4 enclosure? I know that USB 4 would be a bottleneck, but nonetheless it would be interesting. For example, it would be helpful to see the random read/write speeds as well as speed consistency in a USB 4 enclosure. I suspect it would do poorer than the 990 Pro in some tests, but the 990 EVO Plus has the advantage of much lower heat generation, which is advantageous for a small USB enclosure.

is it me, or did you skip the random write test? this is the second drive I've had where the random writes and real-world write speed slow to a crawl after a few MB's. Am I doing something wrong? I ran the magician benchmark and random writes came in less than half of the advertised
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 29 күн бұрын
The definition of "random write test" is pretty broad, there are a lot of settings that can affect the outcome (queue depth, block size, total size, etc). Most benchmarks you see here are traces, which are mostly random anyway, not sequential. If your performance tanks after a few MB, it sounds like there is an actual problem.

Will you add validation for hw encryption capabilities for ssds? Supposedly samsungs are the only drives that can support hw encryption with bitlocker, which is a significant difference in real world usage. There are other encryption options like veracrypt and luks too. Would be great to see validation per model that they work or don’t work with them.

@TechTesters
@TechTesters Ай бұрын
Consistency only matters if you really stress the drive for hours. If you're gaming, your SSD will load a bit of data, do very little for a long time, load a bit more data, and so on. A 990 EVO Plus can outperform a 990 PRO in such a situation.

No real benefits in scale here, I suppose that's the reason. The NAND are the sizes they currently are, and only way to get 8TB is just adding more of them - just increasing the price in a straight line. So, make 4x2TB drives, or make 1x8TB - requires the same amount of physical NAND. Easier for most people to swallow the price of a 2TB.. and then another 2TB...and another.
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 2 ай бұрын
Samsung especially works at such a scale that they're probably not going to bother with capacities that can't sell in very large numbers. That's probably why they've been relatively slow with 4TB capacities as well. It's probably a matter of time though, 4TB was really expensive before and is getting reasonable now. 8TB will be at some point as well.
@LesmentEvgenii

@@TechTesters Thank you for your response. Yes, it would be great to have a larger capacity hard drive. I currently have two Samsung T9 hard drives with 4 terabytes each, but due to the large volume of video I have accumulated, these 4 terabytes are not enough. I would like to have 8 terabytes or more, and at a reasonable price.

Techtesters, I enjoy your videos, they are brief enough and the accent is quite pleasant. (Conversely, when I call customer service and get switched over to an Inda accent I hang up the phone.) However... I have noticed that your videos as well as all of the other reviewers do not concern themselves with the power consumption of the drive. Now, I'm sure that somebody might not think power consumption is important, but they don't know what they are talking about. This is a laptop. Because this is a laptop, and like many there are problems that aren't covered well enough. For example, I made the mistake of putting the maximum amount of DRR4 ram in it. When I did this I was assuming that the unused ram would not consume any power at all. This is not the case, in actual practice, ram manufacturers do not have the common sense to turn off things when they are not being used. Now, let us discuss this from an engineering standpoint, for a moment. We have a plastic box with a battery in it, in this case the battery is 95wh. That means that no matter how we go about doing it, without the fan running 95whs of power will be trapped inside that case. My ssd is not hooked up to the cooling fans heat spreader. So, we have a known amount of power and the only way to cook the heat off involves time. The less power the SSD uses, the longer the battery will last and the more time the plastic box has to get rid of it all. (I suppose we could compare cheap LED light bulbs to the high output models until somebody thinks to corner that obscure high efficiency market...because everybody else was printing high eff in the sales brochures without bothering to test it.) So, because, this obscure market continued on for a few years longer than it should have, you actually have at least three years of laptops that all also are the first models that are windows 11 compatible. I will rephrase, this is a gen 8 Intel processor/chipset in a gen 8 dell laptop. If I had purchased a gen 9 Dell laptop it would have a gen 8 intel processor/chipset. If I purchased a budget/department store model of any gen 10 laptop, it would likely have a gen 8 processor. Now, we get to Microsoft announcing that Windows 10 will be discontinued next year and only gen 8 or better computers will accept Win11. See where we are? So, because it isn't possible that anybody ever tested a gen4 Nvme drive in any of those products....it is a little odd that the warranties all run out at the same time as windows. So, one manufacturer dumped Dell, SK HYNIX, and is advertising their "4.3w" power consumption. That goshed darned engineering thing shows up again and how many watts d we design a six year old printed circuit board to handle? So, it would be quite nice if somebody actually tested the peak wattage, because the las of averages only work if you have a warranty department calculating the result. The rest of us notice the smoke detector giving us the result. Sorry for the long read, I know most KZbinrs hate reading.
@TechTesters
@TechTesters Ай бұрын
Thanks for the compliments and the feedback. In short, I agree a proper power consumption evaluation would be really helpful and it's something I hope I can have included very soon. Not in the next video or two that are already shot, but it's definitely on the agenda. Suggestions are always appreciated!

Most SSDs can/will thermal throttle in laptops when stressed, I'm still working on a power measurement so I can't say anything for sure yet, but based on the specs and Samsung's process I think this one will hold up relatively well in laptops. So personally I wouldn't worry about buying one for that purpose.

When you say it can run at 2x4.. am I to understand that while it has the ability to connect all 4 lanes, that it can also run at just 2 pcie lanes? Would that allow to have two nvme drives both running at 2 pcie lanes each and then be able to run them in raid 0 or 1? I mean if they made it so you can run it at 2 pcie lanes to give you the ability to also put in a add on card which may use 1 pcie lane and not cut down on your graphics card running at 16.. since all these cpu manufacturers refuse to give us more then 20 pcie lanes, which I find absolutely pathetic.. but it is what it is, we have to be happy with what they give us, or stop buying their product, even my IVY BRIDGE cpu has 40 pcie lanes.. so why have we cut that back to 20 lanes? Anyway, I would like to know what I am asking above..
@TechTesters

It gets a little bit complicated because it'll depend on the board, any add-in cards and so on. But these drives can run PCIe Gen5 x2 (with performance essentially identical to Gen4x4), so with the right setup you could run 2 of these at full speed while only using 4 PCIe Gen 5 lanes. I just haven't looked at actual solutions to have that all make sense somehow :)

Currently in NL the 990 Evo Plus 4TB is 370 EUR and the 990 Pro is 260. Why would anyone buy the evo?
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 2 ай бұрын
You shouldn't until it gets (much) cheaper, which it probably will. You had me though, I instantly went to buy another 4TB Pro since I need some more storage and 260 is a great price, but it's 295. I'll wait for black friday ;)

I just picked up the Lexar MN 790 and it is a powerhouse. I'd suggest considering this one first due to price and capability. In fact, I can't understand these benchmarks, as the Lexar in most benchmark reviews puts it near the top of most tables! I used to use Samsung, but not only are they overpriced, but their marketing is doggy as hell - there Cash-Back offers are complete BS.

The NM790 is great and looks great in most benches as well, until you run out of cache like every other budget-ish SSD. If it's cheap, it's a good buy.

The problem here is price. Being better in light workloads doesn't mean much. So. Instead of opening a picture or opening up Chrome+Facebook in 0.25s it opens it up in 0.10s ... impressive, on paper. I can't tell the difference though. If you're buying DRamless, you do it to save a buck, and because you don't do heavy sustained workloads. If it's priced higher than a WDSN850x or 980Pro 1Tb (which is the case right now) it's an automatic no-buy. It can only be priced slightly higher than an NV2.
@TechTesters
@TechTesters 2 ай бұрын
It definitely still needs to get cheaper. I don't think near-NV2/3 pricing is needed, it's objectively better and without any risk of component swaps, but the current 50% premium makes no sense.
@gruiadevil

@TechTesters NV3 is priced ludicrously in my market. 50% over the NV2 Just like this 990 EvoPlus Both of them, while I understand they're better, they can't ask for more than a 10-15% Premium.
