Great review, thanks. More than two years later, this monitor still appears to be the most adequate choice to buy for using with my MacBook Pro 16 as I'm looking for a reliable UltraWide product with thunderbolt 3 compatibility. There're many monitors on the LG side too, but too many incompatibilities issues reported on forums with MacOS. An update of this monitor including IPS, HDR and a better resolution would definitely be a monster considering there's not any serious alternatives so far.

Yeah I agree . .. I have an LG 34inch 5K ultra wide. It’s hasn’t been a completely smooth journey so far. Might even make a video explaining some of those issues and how to get around them.

HDR and Better resolution - yes. IPS - no, why make it worse? I'd prefer to have a contrast ratio of 3000:1 rather than 1000:1. A switch to OLED might make more sense instead.

there are quite many better choice for a 34 WQHD these days with better IPS panel, more refresh rate, though i still love this monitor aesthetic. It has silver bezel along with white chasis, and it matches well with macbook pro color, white keyboard. They are the setup which i like. Sadly i cant find any 34 WQHD ultrawide with that aesthetics, most of all are black chasis/bezel.

@@ewuziechibueze353 i am using gigabyte M34WQ. It has 144hz, far better color and text view experience. I miss the slightly curve of the samsung which make it more aethestic and better view of 2 sides of the screen. The curve IPS version is not so affordable but at this time, the price is down by a fair amount.

The big power brick is because it can power a 85W laptop, so it has to supply 5-10 times as much power as needed for the monitor itself. I also thought - hey that base should be a qi charging pad. Thanks for the review - Ive been wanting one of these since COVID started and theyve only just come back in stock here in AU. I think after your review I will get one .

Ezekielo TV I want to get this monitor so bad but I would like to know more about the picture by picture mode. Like my goal is to game record through my laptop and have that connected to the monitor and have my game also come through the same monitor. Have you tested the picture by picture setting at all?

@@ProTomahawks yes you can using any of the two out of three ports - USB C, HDMI and Display port. just make sure both cables are connected from same laptop to same monitor and you'll be able use PBP or PIP.

The external drive cable gets hot because you likely plugged it into a powered quick-charging port. Maybe try another port and see if it's different.

Hello, I recently purchased this CJ79 ThunderBolt monitor. I am trying to get it's speakers working with my MacBook. I connected the monitor to my MacBook via the thunderbolt cable. When I go to my MacBooks settings Sound -> Output -> Select a device -> I select C34J79x I get an error message. First of, under select a device the "type" next to C34J79x it says "DisplayPort" and upon selection, the error message that I see is "The selected device has no output controls" Could use some inputs on how to get this working, thanks!

Using a usb c cable to connect to my MacBook, I’m noticing the text on the monitor is sub par. It’s not crisp. I even checked the resolution settings on my MacBook and it was set to 3440x1440

As with most ultrawides It maxes out at 1440p resolution. It’s not as sharp as a MacBook screen. It’s pretty good As long as you don’t set your expectations too high 🙂

I just unboxed that monitor and there are immediately some things that throw me off. The screen cannot be moved up a lot, so I probably have to place it on top of a box or so to lift it up. The USB connector does not deliver enough voltage to supply my computer (Lenovo X1 Yoga). It is discharging the battery while plugged in to the monitor. The Picture in picture mode does not work with HDMI, only USBC and display ports are supported. The monitor is also quite small, while it looks big in the videos, and the bending optically distorts the picture, that I have to get used to. The plug for the headphone is somewhere on the back in the middle, now, I need an extention cord for the headphone, if I want to use that plug. The monitor is a good idea, but the realization is underwhelming.

I have the 49 inch monitor. It's great but its not thunderbolt 3. I bought a caldigit ts3 plus dock that would work better if my monitor was thunderbolt3. It will take some getting used to having such a large workspace. Looking to get this instead. Willing to sell you mine if you're interested.

Do ps4 games look weird?, by that I mean stretched out to fill it or have black bars? Trying to find a new monitor but I can't seem to find one where it's decent for everything. I find one that's decently priced but the usb c port can't charge my 15" Macbook Pro, I find this one but it's only curved and I find some other one but it has a crappy stand and so on. It's hard for me to find a good all around for gaming and for usb c/thunderbolt that can charge my MacBook Pro, while can also switch to my consoles here and there.

It's compatible. I'm using it with a 1080ti and it sees the monitor as a G-Sync monitor in Nvidia Control Panel. Only works in Windows 10 though, tried it in windows 7 and it didn't work.

You can do that, but this is only 34 inch which means the resolution is very bad to look at when you split 50/50.

Nice video! Have you come across any issues with the monitor over time? Mine has had issues with the screen lifting off the frame so I had to send it back to Samsung this week. I highlighted it in one of my recent videos if you’re interested Andrew.

Thanks Andrew. Build quality could be much better. As I pointed out it’s made of plastics. Had some cracks on the edges of the bottom plastic frame but the monitor still works fine.

Hoping you can help, for the last 2 days since I set up a new CJ79 monitor I can't get the macbook pro 2018 to recognize the the CJ79. Do you have any troubleshooting tips? Yes I can get my macbook to airpaly and cord connect to other TVs and monitors and yes the CJ79 is turned on the thunderbolt connection secure. Thunderbolt cable even charges the macbook. Tried to force the connection with the 'detect display' key in the macbook display option screen. What should I try next? My Lenovo laptop connects without issue.

Turn off your mac. Disconnect every cables. Then connect them all back again before turning on your mac and see what happens.

As with most monitors, Pixel density is not as sharp as that on a MacBook but it also depends on the resolution you choose on the monitor. At 1440p resolution it’s pretty decent. If you want texts to appear super crisp, you might have to get a 5k or 6k monitor 🙂

I have this monitor and its a g sync compatible monitor. I have a 1080 Ti and g sync works on most of my games. But yes for 800 dollars it should have come with it!
