Samsung CLP-315 Page Count Reset Hack

Done this reset and cleaning out the Imagining drum & toner collector. I have over 5+ working printers that were suppose to be dead. Currently 299$ new on amazon. I work in local Government so I saved anywhere from 100~300 per printer. Saved the tax payers about a 1,000 with my hourly pay taken out. Thank you very sir for all this info.

Turns out my board looks somewhat different than yours, but by zooming I could it as the V1 chip, found it in another location, brushed off my somewhat rusty soldering skills, and it works! Thanks for the great hack!

I was lucky with my toner. It all ran out at the same time so resetting all of the counters made sense. If you want the low toner warnings to work correctly, after you reset using this method, you would need to refill all cartridges (as I did after this hack). If you don't, I imagine the worst you would run into would be areas with missing toner (as you have mentioned). Good luck!

Performed this on my CLP 310 and worked as described. I will add that you should tape up the contacts on the toner cartridges if your cartridges have them, before you do this mod. Otherwise, thanks for the instructions and for saving several people hundreds of dollars.

(2/2) 3 out of my 4 toners have been replaced so they have the chip on them. After putting some tape on the metal pins in the door I retried. Put the wire to ground and removed it when the motor started spinning. Now it took longer to self test so that looked good! Then printed a test page followed by a config page and voila! Printer hacked :D Back to 100% toner & 1 page count. Now I'll fix a button and order me some cheap toner. Big thanks to you for the video and hack!!!

Hi Brian Did work perfect!! But there is an update with the reset! If you have a new toner cartridge w the chip on it MAKE SURE you remove the chip or just put some electric tape on it!! The printer got confused because the printer memory did not match with the cartridge counter and the reset did not go through! Thank you again!!

Worked like a charm! No switch but I used an alligator clip test lead to close the circuit and left the two wires hanging out the back for future use. Although, eventually, I will run out of toner for real. At least I'll be able to use all the toner. Thanks for the clear demonstration.

Thanks Brian, just did this on my Samsung CLP310N, worked like a charm first time, reset cartridges to 100%. Had just one problem identifying (pin1) on 24C64WP, got to look carefully as it has been placed at 180degrees, did not notice 45degree bevel on chip so that top pin to the left you mention is actually (pin 5)

I took me an hour to try different times to release button when starting. I tried releasing the button at blue then red, and reed light and it never worked a wasted a ton of paper until i read here somewhere below .you have to tape the metal contacts on the cartridge! And it works i got 100% all toners and 0 pages! Thanks

Thanks so much. I used your method but only reset my black counter by printing the config page instead of the color test page during the reset. For me, I print mostly black so it empties much more often. The Colors all kept the original values. Thanks again.

Mine did not work when I held it the entire time it ran during start-up, I tried multiple times. However when I let go of the switch immediately after the first green flash it worked! Thank you very much for this hack.

Just had a look at both my 315 & 315W, the boards are quite different to yours! V 0.5 4L & V0.4 4L. Also tried the hack where you lift pin 7 and connect it to pin 8 - no luck. What I really need to know (because I have alot of Toner) is how to reset counter on the ITU.

There is a company out of Canada (find them on Ebay) that sells a little board pretty cheap w/instructions. They also sell toner for less than 1/2 what Samsung does.The serialized toner issue can be gotten around by insulating the contacts. FYI if you are using this printer with the wi-fi option, be prepared to input ssid/wpa every time there is a power failure, so keep a cat5 cable handy. Now...how about an attorney who is hungry that would be willing to lead an anti-trust suit??

Thanks for the info, mine is down to 23% on colors, or so it says on the info page... So I wounder do you just wait till some toner is not working, and then refill the toner at that point?

I installed the momentary switch because I will need to perform the reset procedure the next time I run out of toner. The switch certainly isn't mandatory, but I didn't want to open up the printer every time I needed to reset the counters.

Great vid, i just want to know why did you put the switch behind? Does it have to be used again in printer life? Is it a long lasting solution?

Where do you buy the bulk Refilltoner? Most of the time they price those kits almost the same as imitation or reworked toner cardriges…

Hi Brian, thank you so much - I tried it too (CLP-315) - It's perfect. I additionally had to tape the contacts of the original toner-counter...and what a surprise: Suddenly the printer is able to print colored pictures with "empty" toner ;-) Otherwise, if I do not tape the contacts: After normal re-boot, counter of colored pages is back, mono remeins "forgotten". --> Since 2012, is there any news e.g. does the printer still accept the hack? Or may be it requires original toner after some time printing without gettin any information from the missing counter-chips at toner? Best regards from Germany :-)

There were others around the interwebs who had already identified the EEPROM chip before I got started. That being said, it wouldn't have been that difficult to find if you searched for the part numbers on top of the chips. I have no idea if this approach is possible with the ML-2165. Maybe you could find someone willing to take some hi res photos of the main board? Even if you find the external EEPROM, the approach isn't guaranteed to work as it all depends on the firmware of the main CPU.

I think it is on a different eeprom for my 3185FN. I'll try tho, but I think that chip stores ALL counters BUT toner info. When you do a clear all counters in tech menu, everything's cleared except toner count.

Yea, I was really going for simplicity here. Holding it down that long would certainly be inconvenient if you had to do it every time you turned it on. Thankfully, you only need to do it when you run out of toner, though. Seems like a fair tradeoff.

after reseting you can enable the write protection of the Flach chip set a bridge between VCC and WP next to it. is it possible that the reset dosnt work with Firmware 1.29.11?

I've the CLP 315 but my layout was different. I found V1 right left of the biggest plug. In addition just putting pin 5 on ground didb't work for me. In addition I had zu oben pin 7 (Wp (write protect)). And most interestingly I've to use the printer in that configuration (pin 5 to ground and pin 7 open). Otherwise the counters are back in the thousands.

You should have mentioned that it's NECESSARY(!) to at leat print one color and one mono page while in reset mode so the new counts get writen to the chip, otherwise it will write the old counts after normal boot (both, clp 310 and 315). Btw, you only need to push the reset button until it makes noise, not until it stops making noise. Cheers!

did the mod to the letter ( i think ) when i hold the switch down and turn the unit on it takes a long time for the start up to end -- the difference is that the yellow light stays red and will not print a test page --- after i turn the unit off and back on again it works normal but nothing is reset. now i did connect the wire to pin 1 of the IC - if this is not correct please advise- thanks

Used this hack on a CLP-315W when the imaging unit counter reached its limit. I couldn't print a test page even more! The chip was located a bit more to to the right, next to the ribbon connector. For a successful reset I had to tape all the contacts on the cartridges and had to ground the reset during the boot up until the first green flash of the status indicator. The printer starts spinning for a much longer time than normal. At the end of the boot up you should get a green status, if not; the reset wasn't successful and you should try again. Secondly, because it's the W model, all settings for wireless and ethernet connection are reset. To get access to the printer configuration again you need to connect directly by ethernet (set PC IP: 192.0.0.196 and printer is 192.0.0.192) and configure the printer again. I lost the MAC address of the ethernet connection but that wasn't a problem for the direct communication. When there are problems with the wireless detection of the printer, set the IP to a fixed address within your network. Only by taping all the cartridges or using cartridges without chip, all the counters are reset.

Thanks to your comment i could reset mine as well. Ive tried grounding the pin all the way through the initialization but that would just lead to all lights flashing red. When releasing on the first green blink of the LED everything worked :)

(1/2) I just tried it on my CPL-315. At first it didn't work. The printer kept saying there was a paper jam but soon I found out why... I didn't put the top back on so that's an important thing not to forget! Then I've put the wire to ground until the motor started spinning. It went through its self test which took longer than usual but not as long as it should've. It failed... I couldn't print the config report or nothing. Eventually I found out what the problem was.

Great trick thanks a lot! Just one question. After reseting, all toners where 100% but after reopening the printer, Black was 100% and the other toners, where i left them. (Y43% M48% C53%). Black before reset was at 16%. Should i wait for the others to go low too and then reset again?

I can think of two possible scenarios where this may happen. You may have toner cartridges with chips in them. If so, make sure to tape over the contacts and re-run the hack. Another possibility is that after booting with SDA held low, you printed the configuration page, but didn't print the demo page. Booting with SDA held low interrupts the EEPROM of the page counts leaving them initialized at 0 in memory. Printing the page afterward is what actually writes the new value (1) back into the EEPROM. New values will only be written for the toner colors used on the page. The configuration page is black and white and the demo page is full color. Make sure to print both. It could certainly be something else that I'm not aware of, but these are the things I would check first. Good luck! (c:

;okay i checked the wiring and all --- make sure i had it on the right pin - took it off and replaced. no avail. the printer light would go red and stay that way and had to turn the power off to get anything out of the computer . just for the heck of it i tried again and this time i released the switch when the indicator light turned red, waited for the unit to stop - viola - it worked. all reset. just release the switch before the specified time.

I strongly recommend against doing that. It is very likely that each printer model has its own unique set of memory locations for storing these types of values. Also, it would likely scramble the data on the 315's EEPROM chip making it unusable in that machine if you put it back. If you are interested in pursuing a hack on the CLX model you might be able to start by dumping the contents of the EEPROM, printing a page, and then dumping the contents of the EEPROM again. You would want to watch for areas that have changed, specifically areas that have incremented by one. That is what I was doing when I stumbled upon the other (far easier) hack that I wrote about.
