Phone seems to run better then the a53 which has the same chip, wonder if there were any optimizations or if the auto refresh rate helps with processor strain.

Samsung copy the strategy of apple. Just like apple, samsung put last year processor on their latest entry level phone. On S series, they put last years processor to their New S23 Fe. I guess, its not a bad thing since processor from last year is more optimize and has enough power to satisfy your needs.
