Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Review

Lisa Gade reviews the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Android tablet with a quad core CPU and a 12.2", 2560 x 1600 Super Clear LCD. The Note works with the included S Pen and touch, and it has one of the largest displays found on a pure tablet design. It weighs 1.65 lbs. and is very thin at 0.32", so it's not a burden to hold. The WiFi model we review runs on the Exynos 5 Octa 5420 CPU with MALI T628 graphics. The LTE version will run on the Snapdragon 800 with Adreno 330 graphics. Hi Lisa, GREAT review by the way. I did want to ask a little more about the adobe reader features. I noticed that you were able to highlight and make notes within the PDF document which is wonderful, however I was wondering about saving those highlights and notes. Do they get saved within the PDF document? Or is this basically a scrapbook save? I get my school textbooks in PDF format and I was just wondering how well this tablet would bode with that. They obviously would look great on the giant screen even with multiple view, but its utility i'm a little worried about.

In my eyes, Lisa is the only electronics reviewer I trust. Ive been waiting on this review and ( as always ) it didn't disappoint. Im in the market for a new tablet ( currently have the note 10.1 2012 edition ). For me its either the note 10.1 2014 edition or this note pro 12.2.

***** same here! All signs point to the 10.1 2014 , but the size of the pro 12.2 keeps pulling me towards it. I do a lot of sketching and drawing , so that 12.2 screen would be a great fit.

Another useful well rounded review from you. Ill be interested in what photographers have to say about using this tablet while tethering, as well as color calibration. Great review Lisa Gade! just one thing, you skipped the part where you were gonna talk about the pressure sensitivity of the pen XD how much levels does it have? i know that for artistic purposes a tilt sensitive pen would be needed which you can only get on PC, but still, would you recommend this tablet for artists?

I just have to compliment your work. Great performing by you. It´s nice listening to, very informative and well conveyed. Like this i can keep watching without any annoyances like how the reviewer talks or how it´s to confusing when the arrangement is not well thought out.. I can´t stand it when the reviewer just talking continuously, it then gets to informative like some advanced math explanation you know "english please" :) But you explain the facts in a way in generally easy to understand it and you. Best female reviewer i've encountered and my new favorite along with another guy reviewer i prefer.

We scored the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, at Best Buy on 2/13. My wife just loves it. We replaced a 10" Asus that lasted almost 3yrs. I had watched your review for LG G Pad 8.3 & you mentioned the Galaxy Pro 8.4. From all accounts the pro was available only for pre-order. BB just got a small shipment that very morning, to our surprise. The LG was $50 less, but after having a hands on in the store, I'm sure we made the best decision for the wife. I'm envious now & think I may want to retire my Acer 10" that's 2yrs old. I really like the KitKat interface.

Lisa, wonderful review and overview. I've been watching your reviews for years, and you're one of the great, the few, trusted and unbiased tech reviewers in the field. Thank you for what you do! Anyway, I picked up a black 32GB Note Pro 12.2 from Best Buy a couple of nights ago. I'm a bit of a tablet and phone addict, I have them coming out of the wazoo (it's not painful). This guy is something special. Beautiful screen (although I'm pretty sure it's some kind of pentile/non-RGB-stripe matrix, and I can see the cross-hatching - it's big and beautiful enough I can overlook this), fast speed, ample storage. The touchwiz can be a little off-putting sometimes (I particularly hate how settings is split into tabs - I can never find the right tab first time) but it's really not that bad, and I like the look. Magazine UI I can take or leave - it's basically flipboard - but I like the office/business page for seeing my work calendar and emails at a glance. Yes, I could set up widgets for that - but I don't have to now. Speakers are good, pen works great - the wacom accuracy is maybe even better than the surface Pro IMO. The only slight dig software-wise I have is the version of S-Note. I really dislike the interface for the new S-Note, and I hate that it shows a cover page image, rather than a thumbnail of the note, on the note list/overview page. OTOH, S-Note now synchronizes well with Evernote, which is a large plus. The other note niggle I have is that action memo notes do NOT get put into S-Note by default - you have to manually select and share them, whereupon they are turned into images. This is a MAJOR step backwards in functionality which has been present since the Note 3 and Note 10.1 2014. I cannot fathom why Samsung did this. I love the tablet in most other ways though.

You've got such extreme patience in making your reviews Lisa! Portability is the issue for me with the SGN PRO. Taking pics is somewhat of a joke with it also. Samsung keeps jumping the gun on Apple. I think Apple Inc. mentioned a year and half ago about possible putting out a 12'' tablet.

Hello Lisa. Whenever I want an indepth review, I always check you out....I mean, check your videos out ;). I had the original samsung galaxy note, and now have the note 3. And am in love with this product line. What I especially like about the Note Pro 12.2, apart from the awesome size, is the new Magazine UI. It is so awesome that google wants to shut it down for some reason. Am wondering whether someone can make a launcher out of that similar to nova launcher. How did you get that similar UI look and feel on your note 3? Is it a widget?

I have a crazy question: I am thinking of purchasing this to replace my 5-year-old Lenovo netbook, and really am dying to know, does the Note Pro 12.2 support USB DVD/CD drives? I wouldn't expect it to be able to burn or rip, but if I plugged it in through the dongle, would I be able at access data on data CD's, play music CD's or even play a DVD? I have a small Samsung USB DVD/CD-ROM drive I use now, and really am curious how it might work or not work with the 12.2 Pro.

I'm thinking about buying this for work since I do a lot of hand sketches, diagrams and notes (currently drowning in a sea of post-its) that I need to keep around. Love the screen size since it replaces a standard paper size. But, the machine has been out for over a year now. Is it starting to show its age and starting to seem slow out of the box or is it still a worthy competitor? Just want to make sure its still worth the price. Any help from current users would be helpful.

Great review as always. I've been following news on this tablet since it was announced. I got it on release day and am really happy with it. I'm also happy to see so far it's getting very positive reviews. A lot of comments I see come from people who don't understand the functionality of this device and its target buyer. I'm a perfect candidate for this device because I'm a digital artist. I've been waiting for a decent-sized digital sketchbook for a very long time (I found the Note 10.1" slightly too constricting). This fits the bill perfectly. And I've been finding many other productive uses for all the extra screen real estate besides drawing. One thing I noticed some other reviewers saying is that due to its size, the downside is that it's a two-handed device. I think that's partially true. It's true if you try to hold it like you would an 7" or 8" tablet. But this form factor should be held with your arm, like you would a clipboard or writing pad. Not with your hand like you would a piece of paper. So in that sense, it is a one-handed device. After thinking of it as a clipboard, I've had no frustrations holding it. Anyway, just my two cents. any idea why cpu jumps to 30% when using s note? especially if anything else is running? tablet gets super hot and starts lagging... brand new best buy and samsung have no answers. I returned the 2014 for this because of issues with that... dont know what to do

Pretty sure you can do remote pc gaming if the game supports windowed mode or 'borderless window' mode. How is the lag on remote pc? What if you connect from 3G or LTE to your home pc? Does it run well? Does it use a lot of bandwidth?
