Samsung Galaxy S23 compared to the Pixel 7. These are both fantastic smartphones but one of them is $300 cheaper. Is it worth spending more?

I had the S23 for less than 500 bucks but i don't think i would have paid for it at the full price, even it's an incredible and fantastic phone (battery, cameras, display, performances, etc. and the form factor of course !). The best "compact" smartphone, Samsung has done for years. And the best "compact" flagship phone in the market right now.

I dont understand why reviewers never talk about reception and antennas. The Exynos modem on the pixel is years behind (slight improvement from the pixel 6 iteration which was lightyears behind). People still complain about reception with the pixel, but it just rarely gets talked about. Why is that?
@DWtechfan
@DWtechfan Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Each time I watch a review on a smartphone, they'll talk about the smart features while disregarding the phone functionality. I understand some people don't prioritize calls and reception but it's a must for me. I will never buy a phone if I know the reception and calls don't work. Pixels are horrible because of Tensor being a modified Exynos chipset and modem. Those are notorious for bad reception and call quality being atrocious. All these positive reviews for Pixels are usually either paid Google shills or fanboys who are stuck on Google's nuts.

I much prefer the Pixel layout for the power and volume buttons. I definitely adjust my volume way more than I power on and off the phone. Plus, I don't really need to hit the power button on the Pixel because it wakes when I tap the screen and I can power off the Pixel by pulling down on the notification shade and hitting the on-screen power button. Both phones are excellent devices and I'd take either of them over an iPhone, but IMO I'm a Pixel fan.

Biggest improvement, tech wise, is the fact that, no matter which one of these phones you prefer and choose, you can't go wrong. I'd love to see any of these youtubers, specially bigger ones, provide us with the manufacturing costs when they do a comparison videos. It would give us so much more insight and make the decision making a lot easier. For example, iphone 14 pro max production cost is, roughly, 450$ (around 430euro) and the cheapest option, in my country, is 1300eur.
@eMysterium
@eMysterium Жыл бұрын
Why would production cost matter for a purchase decision?
Жыл бұрын
@@eMysterium because you know what you're buying from the beggining, also, if you have to repair it, it's important knowing how much those parts are they gonna cost, it's like a car, you may not find that information useful, but once you have a problem, that's something you should know before, also, the perception of the quality affects on the price you pay, like apple, they don't cost that much more than everybody else and the iphone 14 is a great example, it costs 900€ but maybe you compare it to the pixel 7 and you find how much paying for the brand actually costs to the user
@wyw201
@wyw201 Жыл бұрын
Is production cost just the BOM or does it include labor, equipment, BOM plus indirect expenses and overhead. Also, does production expense include G&A?
@ninjam77
@ninjam77 Жыл бұрын
@@wyw201 It does not include all the costs that a company will have paid up to the sale of the phone. These "manufacturing costs are so low" claims are generally pretty misleading. Otherwise why wouldn't a competitor produce a phone with similar features for halve the price? They don't because it's not possible. Now it is true that some companies have higher profit margins than others and Apple does probably make a lot more profit per unit sold than most companies but they do also offer their customers value in return that their customers are willing to pay that money for.

I hope I can find a workaround for the fingerprint sensor issues. My S20FE has never had any issues with fingerprint login. What I had lots of issues tho was "phantom touch". this is the EXACT review I've been waiting for. I had the pixel 6 and it was so unbelievably buggy after a year and a half that I gave a shot with the s23 and I love it. the form factor is just right and I love the screen, plus the galaxy watch integration is amazing (the biggest thing I missed from iphone/apple watch). the only major downsides I miss from the pixel is the volume/power button placement (liked the opposite way that the pixel had), and the camera. the s23 is SO over smoothed at night and reacts terrible in iffy lighting, I can't believe how spoiled I was by the pixel. but otherwise, pretty happy with my switch 😁 thanks Matthew for putting out the content I've been wishing other creators would for weeks

I really do feel like there's little to no reason to upgrade within 4 years. Due to a defect in my previous phone (Xiaomi 12X) I had to go back to my old Huawei P20 pro for a bit till I got a replacement Pixel 7. Honestly the only thing that is a big difference is the higher refresh rate. The colors on the Huawei are better than the pixel IMO. Camera differences aren't night and day as people make them out, tho the google camera integration is nice. I don't game much on a phone so speed barely matters for me when you only msg and call people. I find it a huge miss that the pixel doesn't have faster charging. The Xiaomi was RAPID and that really made day to day use easier. All these stupid companies making their phones obsolete because of security and software updates is worse than the right to repair stuff imo.

Nice cover on the Phones. Much Appreciate it! On the Fence on what phone I want to get next... I have an iPhone X and a Samsung S10E. Im not the greatest fan of the S10E, not sure if its a Samsung thing or a Android thing, but I just can't type on that thing. Its down to personal preference , i like everything about s23 its just that they are not changing the layout of the notification panel , its disappointing because samsung is known for its customizations and they might change it by good lock modules if possible who knows. For pictures sometimes you will like pixel while in some cases s23 and they both captures amazing photos. I do still feel that spending 300 dollars more is worth it no doubt. Although you should wait for few months as the price will get reduced eventually.

I actually love the notification shade on OneUI, and I hope they keep that layout for as long as possible. I'm a Pixel fan, and I'm okay with most of Material You... but the layout of those giant buttons on the Pixel's notification shade is just not as practical as it is on OneUI. My biggest software issues with Samsung are: 1) The old "squircle" icons that just look dated and horrible at this point. 2) Still no option for a vertical app drawer. Yes, you can do this with GoodLock, but the implementation is really awful. You can only leave the app drawer with a back swipe, and you can't get rid of the recommended apps at the top. For the most part though, OneUI has become a really slick version of Android and I like it.

I appreciate Samsung that they are keeping up with their commitment , really nice to see By the way i think this time none of the phone in the s23 series would disappoint you as all are best in their segment although I do feel that paying 15000 more on S23+ as compared to s23 for only the battery , charging and size is not worth it though it all comes down to personal preference as well as on finance but all the phones are really great this time around 💥

From someone that had both a P6 at 90hz and a P7P at 120hz. If you play any games or content designed for 60fps, there will be micro stutter on a 90hz panel if it does not switch to 60hz for that content. This primarily affects games, especially 2D ones, that support 60fps animations. Some frames will be held twice or shown only once, but for a shorter duration than would be on a 60hz panel. Unfortunately, this means that, for that content, you will need to toggle Smooth Display off for smoother animations (giving the option a bit of an ironic name in this context). This does not affect 30fps content however. This issue does not occur on 120hz panels as both 30hz and 60hz are divisible. 30 fps content is held for 4 frames, 60 fps is held for 2 frames. It'll look normal. If you are going to occasionally plays games or watch 60 fps content, its something you should at least know about.
@shlk7

Then wouldn't 60fps game on 144Hz monitor in a gaming computer be stuttery as well? Frames and Frequency don't work the way you think they are.
@Disdaine82
@Disdaine82 Жыл бұрын
@@shlk7 Its frame pacing. If I could put it on a graph to show the pacing I would. 60 fps is bad for pacing at 90hz. At exactly 60 fps, every other frame is held twice on the monitor. 1 refresh, 2 refresh, 1 refresh, 2 refresh. At 120hz, its exactly 2 refresh, 2 refresh, 2 refresh, 2 refresh. This is less of an issue at 144hz because if a frame is held twice, its not held nearly as long as the next refresh comes sooner. At 90hz, each refresh is 11.11ms apart. At 144hz, its only 6.94ms. This is the same reason that screen tearing is less noticeable at higher refresh rates as the tear exists for less time and less noticeable as a result.
@rob-123
@rob-123 Жыл бұрын
@@Disdaine82 Thats makes a lot of sense. Your brain is designed to pickup inconsistencies as they could be a danger thus you see stutter as a side effect.
@Disdaine82
@Disdaine82 Жыл бұрын
@@rob-123 Yea. Its also one of those things some people are either sensitive to or don't notice. If someone doesn't notice it, others can appear as elitist jerks. Unfortunately, once you have become accustomed to either high refresh, even pacing, lack of tearing, etc., its presence is distracting. "What has been seen cannot be unseen." It would be great is adaptive sync was applied to cell phones similarly to how it works with Freesync/Gsync. No more per app locked refresh, every frame presented on the earliest possible refresh, and 90hz would actually remain quite competitive.

Pixel 7 is an awful phone. It has bad battery life and terrible QA. The camera's lens breaks, and Google doesn't cover it with a warranty. Got my pixel 7 a few days ago, so far so good. It's peak charging speed is 35-37 watts so yeah it's fast and slows down for the trickle stage. What I love the most is the adaptive charging where the phone tracks when you wake up and gets the battery to 100 percentage by the time, I wish more companies would add this feature. The cameras are great, it's more of a point and shoot type. Installed the Android 14 now most of the bugs are fixed, doesn't heat up now. Overall, I'm loving the smartness of the chip too. I bought Pixel 7 at the end of 2022 and recently switched to S22 which was on sale for 499$ and I absolutely love it. The battery is noticably worse than on Pixel 7, and it might be not as snappy as Pixel 7 (hardly noticable in daily use), but I still like it way more mainly because of a more polished design, One UI, Samsung Dex (which is absolutely fantastic) and ease of use in one hand. If I had to choose between Pixel 7 and S23 I'd chose S23 every single time, especially considering how it improved on performance, battery life and the camera. I'd wait a couple of months for the price drop though.

A nice review. I think a phone with a superior processor, 8 gigs of ram, a superior gaming experience and updates that will make the phone valuable and relevant for 5 years + is worth 300.00 more. You almost have to ask, if all one is going to do is basic surfing, calls, texting and shoot the occasional photo, is it even worth 499.00? My S23 is on route - can't wait! When it comes to software then what do you expect from the one who owns android but One UI is also good too. It depends upon if you like stock android or not. When it comes to hardware and best accurate fingerprint scanner, SD 8 Gen 2 and free memory upgrade if you will pre-order it, 120hz display, DEX and 4 year OS support and 1 year security update. This device is much more future proof compare to Tensor G2 and in gaming. It also has the CPU advantage over A16. The 300 dollar is reasonable and worth it.

I don't like the pictures the Samsung camera creates, Google has way more good taste here imo. I hate that Samsung tries to replace Google software features like autofill, payment etc. and if I leave the Samsung universe quickly for another Android device in near future it will be 75% because of this. I deleted as many Samsung apps as possible. There is one pro-S23 topic left which doesn't get as much attention as I expected. The image quality of the Samsung display is insanely good. Ok I'm switching from Pixel 6 so obvioisly it's way better but can somebody say something about this in comparison to Pixel 7? I'm not talking about the 90 / 120 Hz refresh rate. Just the image quality of non moving picture. I adore this on my S23. I started noticing this after 24 hours of usage though, not in the first moments when my focus was on other stuff. But then, wow.
